In a Jam est surprenant.

As much as that is possible. Among other notable things : imperfect heroes, flawed little town, ungodly will leading to fake-ich marriages, pirate niece, it's all ideal. And all those feelings, mostly those near the end, they are the feelings a great romance can induce... Truly, it's perfect. Read it!

I discovered Kate Canterbary’s book in 2019, and since then, she became my favorite romance author. I love them all, but “In a Jam” has joined “The Cornerstone” and “Far Cry” as the ones I love the most.

In a jam is the book of Jam man, a recurring character that briefly appeared all along the Walsh series. Therefore, needless to say, I was eager to read his story. I realized while reading that Shay was also connected to the Walsh series. Although it is useless to know this to enjoy this story, it made me enjoy the Canterbay world. That’s where lies another of Kate Canterbary’s talents, her ability to build an entirely new story from details.

Kate Canterbary excels at the art of creating the most delicious grumpy men. Nevertheless, it would be a huge mistake to reduce this book to a trope.

On top of that, her writing is so perfect that she hovers you in the book, and it’s like you’re living in there, feeling the motions of the characters. I relished how dense the history of both Shay and Noah is, but it doesn’t overwhelm the reader. When I reached the end, I wondered how I could start another book.

Throughout the reading, I went through laughter, sadness, joy, and excitement. I wanted to hug the characters several times. I’m usually not very much into small-town romance, but Kate Canterbary constantly makes me change my mind.

Listen, maybe I'm just biased because I have a *huge* thing for Canterbary's growly and gruff but absolute simp heroes who worship the ground their heroines walk on, but, HELLO, DADDY BREAD BAKER! This book was one heckuva good time—the banter, the friendships, the romance, and holy granola, the STEAM! 🥵 This also has a plus-sized FMC and I loved the fat rep and body positivity! This small town romance serves marriage of convenience, friends(ish)-to-lovers, the single parent trope and delivers on that great 'meddling (alright, they're nosy) community' vibe that I *love* about small towns. This book has what I've started to think of as the 'chaotic charm' that embodies Canterbary's romances and I 1000% loved it!

I admit that the chemistry took a little time to sink in for me and I think that's mostly because the story relied on their close friendship as teenagers as proof of their connection as adults but didn't really show it; at least, not to the point where the intensity of Noah's feelings made sense. So in a way, the connection came across as very instalove at the beginning. While (IMO) the relationship was never as fully developed as it could've been to lay the groundwork for their connection, the combination of their rekindled friendship, their natural (explosive!) chemistry, the forced proximity and Noah's straight-up simp behaviour towards Shay, had me hoisting the sails and jumping on board this ship pretty quickly! I loved their dynamic and the little wild family they formed together with Gennie.

I honestly can't remember the last time a romance had me cackling as wildly and as often as I did while reading In a Jam, and it's all thanks to the great characters and the ✨exquisite✨ banter. Where do I even get started with Shay and Noah? Shay is a KG teacher who recently got left at the altar and inherited her step-grandmother's farm in Friendship, Rhode Island where she spent the last two years of HS before leaving and never looking back. She's quirky, smart, and has a kind heart. Though she's not without flaws, I thought she was relatable especially when it came to matters of the heart. I really felt for her but she goes through some great growth with the help of her crew and Noah and we loved to see it! In contrast to her sunshine personality, Noah was the gruff growling grump who is essentially the popular all-arounder in the community despite hating it. He's a whip-smart lawyer turned farmer-entrepreneur after moving back to Friendship several years ago and recently became a "single-parent" when he adopted his niece, Gennie. Although he outgrew being the fat kid once he left teenhood behind and is now the physical embodiment of many a person's wet dreams, on the inside he's still the same shy and awkward introvert who's not great socially. He wants to hate Shay for shattering his heart and unrequited dreams but the minute he sees her again, he's a total goner.

WHAT A SIMP AND I LOVED IT! He was so endearing and definitely gave me grumpy Stremmel vibes from The Worst Guy and Linden lumberbear vibes from The Belle and the Beard and honestly, it's my favourite combination. And don't even get me started on the sexy scenes because the steaminess practically melted my Kindle. When it comes to bedroom fantasies, Noah is the filthiest giving minor alpha/dom vibes and the way Shay complements his play was absolute FIRE. He can't keep his hands off her and the simp spoils the hell out of her and listen, Daddy Bread Baker is fine! 🥵

Other than these two with their incendiary Kindle-melting chemistry, I adored the secondary characters in the story. Gennie is probably the wildest and most hilarious child in a single-parent romance that I've ever read. No joke, the stuff that came out of this kid's mouth was shocking and I LOVED IT. 😂 That said, her outlandish behaviour is in large part due to the emotional traumas she suffered in the past year and my heart broke for her situation. No child should have to go through that but Noah and Shay helped bring her out of her shell with their unwavering love and support. On Shay's side, we have the crew of teacher besties who have the best friendship chemistry and the most fun-loving banter. I especially loved her connection with Jaime—this is the kind of ride-or-die friendship I live for—and I truthfully could've read a story just about these two being their unapologetic selves and living their best lives! Friend banter is as high up there for me as romantic banter is and it was a solid win here.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Grumpy, Growly Daddy Bread Baker!
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 25 septembre 2022

This author writes the best men – with their grumpy, growly attitudes and their big hearts and big swoony sense of duty toward friends and family. In a Jam’s Noah Barden fits this description well, with his sense of doing what is right, not what is easy evident throughout the book. Noah was an awkward, painfully shy 17-year old who had acne and had not fully developed into the farmer-bear he appears to be today. In fact, when Shay and Noah meet on the farm her step-grandmother left to her in her will, Shay didn’t recognize him. Boy – had 14 years done some really good things to Noah.
Shay Zucconi was the girl he loved from afar and because he never really knew how to express himself with words, his actions were how he demonstrated his love. Unfortunately for Shay, she was never shown actions of love growing up, always being sent here, there and everywhere as her famous reporter mother was off telling stories to millions of folks and never demonstrating to Shay that she mattered. Shay’s life really was shambles, especially after her former fiancé called her just hours before they were to be married – she didn’t matter enough for him to show up and marry her. This sent Shay reeling and so she decided to take a gap year – and spend it on Lollie’s farm to sort herself out.
Shay spends her time wallowing for a few weeks on the farm, but agrees to tutor Noah’s niece Gennie so she won’t be held back in school. Through these meetings, Shay and Noah fall into a rhythm and Shay learns to be her true self. A fake marriage, a series of stories to the community and two hearts are melded together forever.
This slow-burn story is written exceptionally well – with lots of interesting storylines that don’t quite make sense until you get to the part where Noah and Shay have fallen in love with each other now – not long lost love of the past – and his proof is eye opening to Shay. Along the way you see all the things that Noah did that were right, but maybe not easy – taking over the farm when his father passed away unexpectedly, taking in his 6-year old niece Imogen in when his sister was arrested, buying neighboring farms and building a community of sustainable consumables for the town of Friendship, giving folks a family that didn’t quite fit – but together were a beautiful world of love and connectedness. All these actions are evidence to show that Noah loves you – and make him a hard act to follow.

This book was adorable! I don’t know why I put it off so long! I will admit, it gives off some hallmark movie vibes and Shay’s friends even joke about comparing the situation to one but it’s x rated hallmark. Noah is *chef’s kiss* I love me a good possessive, mouthy man and the fact he’s been in love with her since high school? Even better. He was sensitive but knew he had a hard time with words just like he did when they were in high school, hence the notes. I do with they would have incorporated their old high school notes into their story more than just the end. Like throughout the book to help them get to know themselves more as adults, I feel like it could have been a good opportunity.
I love the single parent trope, Gennie was a piece of work but I loved every minute of her dialogue. Honestly, in the 450+ pages, I do wish we would have seen a little more from Gennie as far as her dealing with her trauma and Noah and Shay helping her heal from it. I feel like it was just “I’m over it” with a very adult response to her feelings at the end even though she 6 and had some big things happen even just a couple chapters prior that reminded us that she is 6.
Shay understandably had reservations about marriage and even relationships in general and the overall fear of abandonment (girl, same) she spoke to me and I understood her feelings a lot!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I laughed along with them and loved their love, more so Noah’s head over heels in love he had for Shay. Shay took a while to get there, but I don’t blame her with her past. But still. C’mon girl! 😂
Would definitely read again!

I remember the first time Jam man was mentioned in the Walshes books. I’ve wanted his story for that long.
This was perfect. Not exactly what I expected but that’s why I loved it so much. Shay was the girl who got away and Noah is the boy she never knew she needed. Two pirates wondering the sea, lost until life brought them back to land, forcing them to see what they’d been missing.
Now I’m going to need her friends books, so if Kate could get on that I’d be so very happy.

Being locked in for Hurricane Ian meant I needed just the right read, and this one hit the spot. Literally hit all the perfect points. Noah is the growly cinnamon roll Daddy Bread Baker, and his niece is probably my favorite person ever. Shay was perfectly imperfect and trying to piece herself back together after her fiancé leaves her at the altar. She finds out she is named in a will with a crazy requirement, and it gives her the perfect place to hide while she tries recover.

Noah and Shay were unlikely friends in high school. They didn’t run in the same crowd at all, but were neighbors and close friends with dreams of leaving their small town behind. From the outside, she seemed perfect. Rich, beautiful, travelled around the world… but reality meant she had a mom who was never around and she was raised by nannies and shipped to boarding school until she gets expelled and sent to live with a step-grandmother. Noah was shy, awkward, chunky with horrible acne, but loved Shay completely (even if she never knew). He had the nuclear family, but it was filled with criticism and judgment, and left he and his sister with scars. As an adult, he’s back running the family farm dynasty and raising his niece. His niece Imogen is everything awesome. She’s a precocious foul mouth pirate girl, who has had more trauma than she should have. I loved her immediately, and wish I knew her in real life. Noah and Shay both had their own trauma and issues, and there were absolutely times you wanted to shake them both. The beauty of it all was that it was real. The reality is that facing trauma and self esteem issues is hard. And making the changes ti get past them is difficult and takes time. Communication is a learned skill. Her friends were supportive, yet called her out when needed. I loved them for it.

I was sucked into this book and felt the entire roller coaster of emotions. Gennie will have you cracking up with the things that come out of her mouth! And Noah…. So much swoon. I was so glad I saved this for today, as it was exactly the perfection I needed.
