3,0 sur 5 étoiles A good read but not as dark as I expected

I'd rate this book 3.5 stars. I enjoyed it, but as this is Book 1 in a series, the main couple aren't given closure with their relationship far from concrete (I won't spoil anything, but there's not even a happily for now). Will is a broken man hiding behind a successful equity company that makes him oodles of money. Have being raised by an abusive father and abandoned by his mother, he thinks relationships are the devil's work and women are designed purely to leave him. Having left a long line of fired secretaries behind him, he's instantly enamoured by Bristol when she arrives at his business as a temp for two weeks. When his CFO brings an unusual transaction to his attention, Will figures out that the lovely Bristol has embezzled money from his company. He decides it's a perfect opportunity to put a claim on her and release some of his darker side, giving her the option to give him smexy times or for him to call the cops. If you like romance with a darker edge, this seems pretty intriguing. Unfortunately, apart from Will and Bristol have a few pretty hot moments, the blackmail pretty explicitly stated in the novel's title isn't really there at all. There's the initial agreement, him making her be his date for one night, her spending time at his place and a couple of steamy office moments, but Bristol is into it and Will goes out of his way to care for her, even though he's emotionally closed off, so I didn't really find the blackmail element front and centre, nor did I find him as nefarious as I would have assumed.

The book's writing was solid for the most part, although the story is pretty tropetastic. There's Will, the damaged hero who puts up a normal, if cold and ruthless, front to hide the fact that he's emotionally crippled, using an underground fight club as his poison of choice to remind himself that he's not worthy of love. There was a lot of 'I want her but am no good for her so have to let her go for her own good' business that's been done a thousand times before. I actually thought Will was pretty decent for the most part, trying to help Bristol and being really protective of her. Considering the title of the book is Blackmail, I expected there to be more of him subjecting her to his naughty demands but there seemed to be more of him fantasising about her and the idea of having her in his life while he spent money to try and 'save' her rather than actual dominant and deviant behaviour to manipulate her for his own means (and sue me, this is what I was hoping for more of lol). The phrase 'blackmail' is repeated often, but unfortunately stating something doesn't make it so. If it was, I'd be swimming in money and married to a Hemsworth while reading all day and playing with my dozen cats and alpacas. As for Bristol, she has her own issues. She's the primary caregiver of her ten year old twin siblings and living with a deadbeat father who has them moving across the country as he escapes from one con to the next. When an armed man threatens them, she decides to steal...while she's a temp...at the behest of her loser father who then perks right up at the thought of his daughter putting herself into danger or using her assets to help him out. Honey, it's time to drop your dad like yesterday's garbage. She had the whole naïve, virginal, just doing her best to help her family vibe going for her. She was compassionate but started coming pretty close to the 'too stupid to help' type (thankfully she didn't cross into this, though, so I liked her).

There are also a lot of familiar, well-worn clichés. She was an inexperienced virgin but Will has magic bits so naturally she's turned on by his dominance and darkness, leading to minimal pain as she jumps onboard and rides the pleasure train. I believe the word 'frantic' was used in their initial joining. There was the strange and repetitive use of the slur 'corporate *insert the 'w' word that rhymes with door*' used by both Will and Bristol to refer to the latter character. I think maybe this was thrown in here and there to give the supposed blackmail situation some teeth - it didn't - it just seemed weird when the term kept popping up. Will's mother left him as a child, so the usual 'all women are evil who will just leave me' song and dance dragged out - surely someone who's so successful and has money falling about him everyone is more clued on than this? Talk about long-term mummy issues. There's also his constant referral to himself as a monster hiding behind a suit and rules at work.

It was a solid enough and entertaining read, even though it was trope city at times. The instalove was strong and some of the repetition wasn't too far behind it. While the story obviously isn't finished, the blurb for Book 2 makes the story line sound pretty similar to Blackmail so I'm not sure if I'll grab it when it comes out - I'm afraid more repetition of the same themes will make me stabby, no matter how much I liked the main characters and the story line in general. Quick note: there's also a book on Will's brother so some readers might be familiar with his story and background. I haven't read Emerson's story and even though there were references to him and his wife, it didn't impede this story.

Hate cliffhangers, the books was great though… very steamy but can’t stand cliffhangers. Still look forward to reading the next book to find out what happens to Bristol and will.

Blackmail is the first book in the Controlling Interest trilogy by Amelia Wilde.

This story is of Will LeBlanc. If you read the previous Collector trilogy by Amelia you have already met Will because he is one of the two brothers of Emerson LeBlanc. Will is a powerful and controlling man. When he meets his new temporary assistant Bristol Anderson for the first time he is already drawn to her, but he has a strict rule to not start something with employees. But when he finds out that she was stealing some money from his company it’s the perfect opportunity to blackmail her.

I was so intrigued to find out more of Emerson's brothers and Amelia didn’t disappoint! I read this book in like three hours because I couldn’t put the book down. I was so captivated by the story and I just needed to know what happened next. Will and Bristol have such an instant chemistry you can’t deny and there is so much sizzling tension in the air. They are pure fire together! Bristol is such a strong woman what she is going through and does everything for her two younger siblings. For me Will is a broken person and I can’t wait to find out more about his story!

Really can’t wait for the next part!

Not sure what I was expecting from a book titled “Blackmail" but it wasn’t this. In my defense, I’m Wilde newb, but I rolled up my sleeves and dove in once I turned down the AC and cranked up the fan. Overheated is not a pretty look on me. ;)

So here's the basic premise. Woman has a con man for a father and two younger siblings to take care of. She embezzles from her temp job in corporate Manhattan to pay off her father's debt, and her boss finds out. Rather than calling the police and firing her, the devious alphahole of a boss lays out a completely different way to pay back the money.

Holy hades, if you like ‘em scorching hot, this is the read for you! Nothing too outrageous (at least, not yet) but H O T ! The chemistry between Bristol and Will is palpable, and for those of you who love a broken, damaged hero that only his strong, compassionate heroine can heal, this is your read.

Yes, it's a cliffie ending, but not a jaw-dropping, I-want-to-smother-this-writer-with-a-pillow kind of ending. It just leaves you wanting more. Begging for all things Will and Bristol, and probably pre-ordering the next installment, Extortion. Read as they come out, or wait and read them in an epic, smexy, heart-wrenching binge, but read them!! You absolutely will not be sorry.

We got a glimpse of Will LeBlanc, one of the three LeBlanc brothers, in The Collector Trilogy series (Emerson LeBlanc’s story). Now in Blackmail, the first book in a new series, it’s time to get to know Will.
Bristol has a job temping for Will. Unfortunately she has no option but to take her dad’s advice and embezzle some money from Will’s company, in an effort to keep her her father as well as her 10 year old twin siblings safe.
When she is caught out, Will finds a way for her to pay back the money . . . but not in cash.
With the heat and spice, Amelia takes us on another Wild(e) ride!

I am so in love with this story and cannot wait for more in the series!
Sexy, a bit dirty, and chemistry. Will Leblanc is one hot but powerful and at times, demanding man. A dark past. Bristol has more on her plate than she can manage and when she does something illegal to help her father, it puts her in debt with Will.
He decides to make her repay him in other ways, and she cannot help but like it. Despite being temporary, a bond builds, and Will finds himself in conflict. A man with a dark past, he is more than she can handle, so he thinks. But Bristol wants all of him.
Can he trust himself with her?

This is Will Leblanc (Brother of Emerson Lebanc’s, Daphne Morelli’s other half) and Bristol Anderson story, and you do not want to miss this one! It is a very sexy and interesting book. I have read so many books, by so many different authors, about the Contantine and Morellis. So many books, all intertwined. The Midnight Dynasty saga is never ending and that is just fine with me. The biggest challenge is jumping around from relative to relative because I am caught up with many of the series and am now waiting for new releases to keep me going. I highly recommend all the books in these collections.
