This quick read is the prequel to the Deserted Island series, Carter Morelli’s story of survival, danger, and intrigue after crash-landing on an island in the Pacific Ocean along with his passenger, wildlife photographer June Porter. It is part of the Midnight Dynasty world.
To date, the Deserted Island series includes:
0.5 The Crash
1. Force of Nature
ABOUT THE MIDNIGHT DYNASTY WORLD:
This story is part of the Midnight Dynasty world, which is a collection of books by various authors, each revolving around the warring Morelli and Constantine families. The families are surrounded by money and power, and marriages in their privileged world are arranged strategically. While it is not necessary to have read the related stories, you will obviously enjoy this story more with knowledge of the various related stories that precede it.
From what I have gleaned, the Morelli and Constantine children are still not entirely in the know as to the source of the feud, but it does involve the parents, Bryant and Sarah Morelli and Lane and Caroline Constantine. Some of the children have been pulled into the fray as well.
Many of the romances in this world entwine the two families. This is Carter Morelli’s story; it remains to be seen whether or not the Constantine family will factor into it.
ABOUT THE MORELLI FAMILY:
Bryant and Sarah Morelli’s marriage may have been arranged, but their loveless marriage produced a large family – they have eight children. Bryant Morelli is smart and powerful, but he is fundamentally a broken man whose history of drinking has scarred his family. His drunkenness leads to abuse, which is the family’s dark secret. Although his son Lucian wrestled control of Morelli Holdings from Bryant, he continues to wield his power and influence. Sarah Morelli is proud of her English heritage, and she enjoys her esteemed social standing in Bishop’s Landing. She plays her role well, but she wears a mask to hide her unhappiness. She relies heavily on her daughter Eva for help with managing the household.
Eva is Director of the Morelli Fund, managing the family’s charitable efforts to ensure they go to worthy causes. It is her strength that carries her entire family. Her story with Finn Hughes is told in One for the Money by Skye Warren. Her story overlaps Carter’s.
Leo is building his own empire. He married Haley Constantine, who is now pregnant. Their story is told in the Beast of Bishop’s Landing Trilogy by Amelia Wilde.
Lucian is CEO of Morelli Holdings, the family business. He married Elaine Constantine. Their story is told in the Starcrossed Lovers Trilogy by Jade West.
Sophia is a wild child, the opposite of Eva.
This is Carter’s book.
Daphne is married to art collector Emerson LeBlanc. Like Eva, Daphne is considered a good daughter. The couple’s story is told in The Collector Trilogy by Amelia Wilde.
Tiernan is married to Bianca, a Constantine. Their story is told in the Dark Dream Duet by Giana Darling.
Lisbetta Anne-Marie just graduated from high school and is about to begin college.
IN THIS BOOK:
The story opens at Heathrow airport during summer break. The Morelli family, taken from One for the Money, believe that Carter is spending part of his summer on a geological expedition – but his family is not clear where he went. There is some mystery surrounding his character.
Carter Morelli, twenty-nine, loves rhizomes. They help him to understand the world around him. He teaches biology at Oxford University, and although he loves plants, his job is also a convenient cover. He is not the typical Ph.D. He also works for the government in an off-the-books capacity. He uses his pilot’s license to fly to remote locations during breaks, studying exotic plants, nobody the wiser to the real reason for his travels.
As a member of the famous and powerful Morelli family, Carter has no need for money. Earning it doesn’t motivate him; instead, he enjoys donating to good causes. Despite the privilege he was raised in, Carter’s childhood was tainted by violence. Living in London puts some space between him and his family back home, just outside of NYC. That distance helps keep his cover safe, but it also gives him space from the painful memories, from the knowledge that he is poison.
June Porter, Pulitzer Prize-winning wildlife photographer, fell in love with photography at a young age. Despite her accomplishment at such a young age, she remains humble. She was often left on her own as a child, so her camera became her best friend. She finds that photography helps her to see the world. If she does her job well, she can unveil the truth behind any façade. She moved from Georgia to Britain some time ago, which led to her latest assignment for Oxford. Unfortunately, doing her job sometimes means flying, and this job is no exception. Her fear of flying is a full-fledged phobia, but she won’t let that stop her.
As the summer break commences, Carter prepares to leave on a three-week mission to Mauritania, Africa, sponsored by his biology department at Oxford. This time he won’t be doing the research. He is instead tasked to pilot a wildlife photographer and help interface with researchers. The trip will also serve as a cover for his latest mission. But when Carter sees June Porter, he was not expecting such an innocent and inexperienced photographer. Her innocence grates on him. While Carter is the last person June should rely upon, he feels inexplicably drawn to protect her. Little does he know he will be put to the test even before they reach their destination. There remains much mystery surrounding both Carter and June as their story comes to a close with a cliffhanger.
Watch for Carter and June’s story to continue in Force of Nature.
Carter and June’s story opens with a crash landing in this exciting romantic adventure. Carter is jaded and walled-off from the world, while June is optimistic and vulnerable. Their story begins here with romance and intrigue. Carter considers himself to be poison, but we have yet to learn precisely why. It becomes clear that the flight has been sabotaged, so all indications point to him as the reason. Whether or not that proves to be true remains to be seen, as there is little yet known about June. Some of Carter’s background is known via other Morelli books from the Midnight Dynasty world, so we already know he was raised by an abusive father. The reason for Carter’s guilt, though, is unclear.
Carter and June’s romance begins in this steamy and suspenseful prequel. Carter is poison, and June is pure innocence. When Carter pilots photographer June Porter to an assignment, things go wildly wrong. The story is nicely written. The plot is somewhat complex. The characters are introduced here and show promise. The story is told in first person. The POV alternates between Carter and June. I rate this book four stars.
