3,0 sur 5 étoiles I struggled with this one unfortunately

This was my first book from this author and I'm not going to lie, I struggled to pick it back up and finish it.

Firstly, it really needs a trigger warning for drug use on page and multiple references to drug taking. It's cannabis not anything harder, but that's still an issue for some people.

That aside, I'm not a massive fan of normalising smoking or eating edibles just for the hell if it, so what was happening in the background kept distracting me.

Chris eating edibles to help manage anxiety was something I had zero problem with though and I found him to be a super sweet character. I also really liked Aiden too, and felt that they made a cute pair.

However, the pacing seemed to be very slow both in terms of the relationship development but also over the time period being covered.
Nothing happens for ages other than Aiden fretting about his pre-med coursework and pressure, they start seeing each other and Chris distracts him with "life" as part of the "Glow Up" referred to in the title but which has only a nebulous feeling after it's first mentioned.

That was the main niggle I had as I got past the 30% mark, but then things did improve and I will give credit where it's absolutely due, there's some lovely conversations and serious adult discussions about their expectations and experiences.

The relationship gets deeper and the sexual exploring steps up several gears, culminating in a lovely (and also possibly dumb as rocks) decision to get it on in the massage room at Chris' treatment school. College kids eh 😁

I found myself wondering when the "dramatic" moment would come and it's slightly beyond the usual 75% Third Act crisis point.

But it was clear something was going to give and it would be with Aiden's dad (which was the only real tension element at all throughout the narrative) and so it did.

It felt organically developed though, not just chucked in, and I found myself invested again while all the too-ing and fro-ing over fears and feelings is going on.

My other odd niggle popped ip here and it was a storytelling choice I found just odd.
Chris has two mums, he refers to them in general conversation (and thinks of them) as Ma and Mom, but (within the editing narrative), they're referred to as Liz and Dani i.e. Chris looked at Liz as she spoke, Dani walked past and smiled etc, not Chris looked at Ma/Mom.

It really threw me off each time it happened and made things feel clunky for me throughout the whole time they were on page.

Now it sounds like I'm dissing everything but there was lots of good things too. I liked the less "frat/party boy" feel of this story. I loved there was no stupid miscommunication or lack of conversations about hopes and dreams.

I thought they matched as a pairing and I could see them as a long term success as a couple. I liked Aiden's roommate Drew, wasn't as keen on Chris' supposed best mate Tommy who came across as a **** often.

I liked the small touches that referred to the importance of music to them both and I really liked the way Aiden's future was turned into something that naturally arose from the storytelling.

Overall I suspect this is very much a case of "it's me" and my preferences not meshing with the style of this book.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles 5 Big Stars!

Oh I love this book! I know it’ll be one of my favorite rereads, too. I have fallen in love with 5 of this author’s books, and now 6. She writes in a way that just pulls you in, and takes you on an adventure of romance that melts your heart. I think that’s what I love most about A M Johnson’s writing, the romance. You can just feel the characters falling in love, seeing the big and the smallest things that they touch the others hearts with. Heavy sigh.....

Chris has been noticing and crushing on quiet Aiden for two whole years, ever since he first saw him their freshman year. Chris is handsome and popular, but incredibly shy when he sees Aiden every day at the same study desk on the third floor. He makes a point to always get water refills from that water fountain, just so he can see Aiden again, always trying to find a way to approach him without looking like an idiot. The few times he almost made it to him to break the ice, something happens to stop him. Or he just clams up and/or loses his nerve, or the opportune moment. Aiden studies every moment of the entire day, not because he’s a brainy student, but because he isn’t. He’s on scholarships to pay for his college and is Pre-Med, so must get good grades in order to keep his scholarships. No way to cover costs otherwise. He’s trying to become a doctor, psychiatrist actually, in order to have a lucrative career. He has been the caretaker in the family of he and his father since he was 15, when his mother ran off with another man to Switzerland, leaving his father in shambles. And him motherless. His father started drinking and never could really stop. He is constantly starting new jobs only to lose them the same way, his drinking. Keeps saying he’s done, quitting drinking and then is all excited when he gets new job, but of course he loses that one too. This is Aiden’s driving force, to help his Dad, pay his bills and get him real help.

Chris and Aiden finally accidentally meet, twice, and Chris at last knows the name of who he’s been calling “Science Guy” for 2 years. So happy and more infatuated than ever, Chris finally asks Aiden to have a drink with him. Aiden doesn’t have a spare minute in his days for anything at all, but is instantly and strongly attracted to Chris and surprises himself by saying he will have coffee with him. That’s all Chris needs, and he is thrilled. This begins the beautiful story of two sweet, intelligent guys who you get to see falling in love with humor, and a shared love of music. Both play guitar and like the same bands. I loved every single page of this very moving story. And bonus was excellent editing! No typos, wrong or missing words, which seems like I’m seeing more and more of lately. This just takes me out of the stories and ruins the flow for me. Just sloppy, and rushed. I love all of A M Johnson’s stories. They grab you by the heartstrings and take you on a journey. And leave you with warm fuzzies, without any saccharine mushy crap. And always professionally proofread, no distractions pulling you out of the story. Witnessing two lone souls find each other and fall in love is a trip you can take again and again; some rereads never get old. I highly recommend this very touching story.

"In a crowded bar, in a sea of people, it would only be me and him. It was private, and like always, it was “Cleopatra.” It was peanut butter and grape jelly. It was two years on a rooftop. It was sex and skinny dipping. It was sun-warmed sheets and holding hands. It was endless studying and laughter. It was guitar strings and calloused fingertips. It was us." -The Glow Up by AM Johnson
I have truly enjoyed every book in the series so far, but this one is my favorite! Ms. Johnson's writing is eloquent and romantic and the story was beautiful!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A very romantic nod to music and first love

“The Glow Up” is book five in the Franklin U series and my first book by A.M. Johnson. I have to say, I loved every second of it. Amanda wrote such an endearingly sweet book. It’s all about first love, finding yourself, and figuring out the right path in life. Chris and Aiden are the sweetest couple and I was overjoyed when they got their HEA.

Chris has had a crush on Aiden, whose name he doesn’t actually know at first, for two years. He’s never spoken to him, yet he still pines for him. Aiden is stressed to the max trying to keep up with his school work. He studies hard, worries about his dad, and barely has any time to do any of the fun things that make up the quintessential college life.

Chris is curious if the two will ever actually speak and is shocked and delighted when Aiden shows up at the massage school that he is fulfilling clinic hours at. Aiden becomes uncomfortable after having a natural reaction to Chris’s massage and leaves flustered. The pair bump into each other again at the greenhouse that Chris works at and unexpectedly become friends. Their friendship quickly transitions to romance, and eventually a relationship.

The connection between Aiden and Chris is so authentic and unadulterated; it’s really beautiful to witness. Chris smooths out the anxious edges in Aiden’s life and Aiden gives Chris a chance to replace fantasy with reality. Getting to know one another brightens up both of their lives. Music is a huge part of this novel and solidifies the harmonious bond between both MCs. There’s so much depth of emotion in this book. It was wonderful to see Aiden spending Thanksgiving break at home with Chris and his moms. Even though there’s a moment of concern near the end of that trip that causes just over a monthlong separation, the pair hold on to one another. So their reunion is even sweeter when they perform at Open Mic night on December 30th.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the epilogue jumped seven years into the future. It was heartwarming and amazingly tender. I really loved reading this book. The dialogue was top notch, the cast of characters fantastic, and the pacing was great. I’m looking forward to reading other titles by A.M. Johnson. Of course, I’m also looking forward to book six in the Franklin U series!

Me gustó porque se puede sentir que los personajes se comenzaron a enamorar antes de acostarse, eso es algo que últimamente no parece ser común. Me gusta el romance y esto es romance. Hasta ahora el libro mas lindo de FU.

Yep, getting the same vibe through this and Book 4, kind of like the same tempo to start, middle and ending. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this relatively short read.

Loved Aidan and I hope the cover represented him, as it is gorgeous. I don’t like situations where the failures in parents lives become the burdens on their children, especially when the parents issues are self inflicted.

Chris was also an adorable guy, so open, friendly and kind. Liked his two Mums too. He had such a lovely happy life and wanted Aidan to live happily, for himself too, whether they were together or not.

As I said this was a mere 5 hours long and no angst really or triggers. Can’t remember if I’ve read A.M. Johnson before but wouldn’t hesitate to read her again.

Aiden and Chris are good together and it takes a lot of guts to tell someone that you have had a crush on them for years! Aiden has struggles with his Dad and Chris has two hippy mom's who idolise him. I'm glad there is no messy break up because that would be typical storyline but there is space for one of them to make professional choices.

As we have come to expect from this author the writing in this book is beautiful, descriptive and as the relationship between Chris and Aiden builds we get to experience all their highs and lows as if we are a part of them.

Chris first spotted Aiden two years before meeting him and although he didn’t even know his name, he called him “science guy” and would look for him every day in the science block, he crushed on him big time so you can imagine his horror when Aiden and his roommate Drew walked into the Therapy Centre where Chris worked as a masseuse to gain his degree, for a massage. This is the first time Aiden has seen Chris and the chemistry sparked 😉 As Aiden bolted he hoped to never see Chris again but was mortified to bump into him soon after and so begins the start of a beautiful love story.

This was an enjoyable book and I really liked Chris and Aiden I also really took to their best friends and roommates Tommy and Drew, two very strong characters with a good sense of humour who always had their backs. There was little angst although Aiden was going through difficult times but it was a story of a developing love.

I was going to give a four star review but the final 20% of the book brought out the feels and I got a bit emotional and teary and so it’s a five star from me!

This series remains a really enjoyable read.

Wow, this book was perfect! I love that once Aiden and Chris finally met they were all about the relationship. Almost all romance novels have the two characters fighting to *not* be in a relationship, to pretend they don’t care as much as they do, to struggle to leave behind their playboy ways to settle down TLWO they someone for the first time. Not these two! These are relationship boys. They’re honest, they don’t okay games, and they each grow as they fall for each other. I can’t remember the last time I read a romance where the MCs decided to be boyfriends and didn’t wait until the end of the book to do it.

This book is fairly low angst, even though the stakes are high. The situations and the emotions felt very honest here. I really forgot the plot of the book (and the title!) was supposed to be Glow Up because that pretense of a plot was dropped early on, if it ever really existed at all. There was no Pretty Woman-ing happening here. They mention a “bucket list” a couple of times but there was no obvious plot for Chris to get Aiden to change. But a manufactured scenario like that would have cheapened this book anyway. I’m glad it utterly failed at the assignment because what we got was so much better.

I’m not sure if I’ve read much from this author before, but I loved her writing, especially the sex scenes! Very detailed, but in a romantic way, describing every hitch of breath and every touch of fingertips. Not very formulaic at all. It felt very authentic.

This is a book I would definitely read again. Highly recommended.
