3,0 sur 5 étoiles I struggled with this one unfortunately
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 30 octobre 2022

This was my first book from this author and I'm not going to lie, I struggled to pick it back up and finish it.

Firstly, it really needs a trigger warning for drug use on page and multiple references to drug taking. It's cannabis not anything harder, but that's still an issue for some people.

That aside, I'm not a massive fan of normalising smoking or eating edibles just for the hell if it, so what was happening in the background kept distracting me.

Chris eating edibles to help manage anxiety was something I had zero problem with though and I found him to be a super sweet character. I also really liked Aiden too, and felt that they made a cute pair.

However, the pacing seemed to be very slow both in terms of the relationship development but also over the time period being covered.
Nothing happens for ages other than Aiden fretting about his pre-med coursework and pressure, they start seeing each other and Chris distracts him with "life" as part of the "Glow Up" referred to in the title but which has only a nebulous feeling after it's first mentioned.

That was the main niggle I had as I got past the 30% mark, but then things did improve and I will give credit where it's absolutely due, there's some lovely conversations and serious adult discussions about their expectations and experiences.

The relationship gets deeper and the sexual exploring steps up several gears, culminating in a lovely (and also possibly dumb as rocks) decision to get it on in the massage room at Chris' treatment school. College kids eh 😁

I found myself wondering when the "dramatic" moment would come and it's slightly beyond the usual 75% Third Act crisis point.

But it was clear something was going to give and it would be with Aiden's dad (which was the only real tension element at all throughout the narrative) and so it did.

It felt organically developed though, not just chucked in, and I found myself invested again while all the too-ing and fro-ing over fears and feelings is going on.

My other odd niggle popped ip here and it was a storytelling choice I found just odd.
Chris has two mums, he refers to them in general conversation (and thinks of them) as Ma and Mom, but (within the editing narrative), they're referred to as Liz and Dani i.e. Chris looked at Liz as she spoke, Dani walked past and smiled etc, not Chris looked at Ma/Mom.

It really threw me off each time it happened and made things feel clunky for me throughout the whole time they were on page.

Now it sounds like I'm dissing everything but there was lots of good things too. I liked the less "frat/party boy" feel of this story. I loved there was no stupid miscommunication or lack of conversations about hopes and dreams.

I thought they matched as a pairing and I could see them as a long term success as a couple. I liked Aiden's roommate Drew, wasn't as keen on Chris' supposed best mate Tommy who came across as a **** often.

I liked the small touches that referred to the importance of music to them both and I really liked the way Aiden's future was turned into something that naturally arose from the storytelling.

Overall I suspect this is very much a case of "it's me" and my preferences not meshing with the style of this book.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles A simple love story but nothing extra-ordinary

Well, unfortunately this won't be my favourite of the Franklin U series. This was my first book from the author and to be honest the style didn't catch my attention.

The Glow Up is a simple love story between two college boys. It does not have any interesting tropes, it's sweet in its simple, very much ordinary self.
Two boys, Chris and Aiden, one crushing from afar on the other, have their awkward meet-cute in a massage session.
After that, fate decides to push them together and they begin their sweet journey towards their forever.

Chris is a nice guy with a huge heart and Aiden is the broody one with a lot of baggage. And Chris decides to help him find himself and escape his prison he created for himself in doing a degree he doesn't enjoy.
The musical aspect of the story was cute and powerful, I loved how they connected through songs and playing the guitar together.

However, it really was too simple and I was bored halfway through because of the lack of any kind of angst. And because the plot was kinda flat it felt like more smut than an actual full on interesting read. Which is not a bad thing, I just don't enjoy these types of books.

The last 15% of the book I actually found interesting but it was not enough to make up for the previous 85%. I had times when I though I'm going to just put this book down and start something new.

Overall, it was an ordinary college love story with very little angst and very much heat. If you just want a sweet romance without much of anything heavy, this one's for you.

I’m trying out this new thing where I DNF books (7 so far this year). So I figured, when it came time to decide if I should read the first four books in an effort to get to the one I want or dive right in at book 5, to just do it. Go big or go home, right? And I’m really happy I decided to embrace my inner rebel with this series.
From the summaries and reviews, I got the impression that the previous books were giving frat/party bro vibes. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, it wasn’t what I was in the mood for. It was refreshing to read about the academic side of college in a romance. Both MCs were sweet, supportive of one another and talked out their problems, even if they sulked before hand.
This book was a bit more than a 3 star read for me. I thought the MCs were cute and realistic (even Chris and his moms) but it wasn’t quite a 4 either. It’s been a few weeks and while thinking of the story still makes me smile, these aren’t characters that I can’t stop thinking about. I will definitely check out more by this author though.

I don't know if I just wasn't in the right head space or what but it took me 3 goes to get passed the first 10% of this book.

To me the characters were fine but not stand out and the relationship seemed sort of forced.

I think I'm going to read again in a few weeks and give it a more fair chance.

It wasn't a bad book, just kind of forgettable to me

2.5 stars!

This was not my cup of tea. I couldn't relate to either main character and I found that this one just never seemed to end.

I finally finished but I feel like it was a waste of days and days.

Meh!

I don't like top much angst in a book but I prefer that SOMETHING happen. It was just OTT sweet and sappy the whole time. Not terrible, just nothing special.
