I have been a big fan of Ryan holiday over the years and read almost all his books but I find that lately the quality of his work is declining. The research and stories are getting more superficial and it feels like he is opening unlocked doors. I didn’t feel very enlightened by this book

Ryan Holiday is one of my favourite authors. I already read the first book, Courage is calling, of the series. This book is as wonderful as the last one. It really demonstrates the necessity and essentiality of self-discipline in one's life with great examples throughout the history of humankind. The only thing that bothered me was that some chapters were a bit short which was a bit bothering when you just got into the story of the chapter.

This is a small book that uses stories from Marcus Aurelius, Queen Elizabeth II, Lou Gehrig, Angela Merkel, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Winston Churchill to highlight their restraint and dedication.

It also then provides cautionary tales from Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, King George IV to highlight examples of self-inflicted destruction.

This approach makes it engaging and it has very small chapters which are easy to read and divided into three parts - The Exterior (The Body), The Inner Domain (The Temperament) and The Magisterial (The Soul).

The smaller chapters allows you to dip in and out and use this as a reflection. The book helps make a compelling case for self-discipline and can be a great reflection tool but it doesn't really provide any ground breaking content. If you have read Ryan's previous books then you will maybe notice some repetitiveness, or any other self development book that covers lots of these topic areas. So it may not appeal to everyone.

However, if you want to motivate yourself and get some inspiration to start building the self-discipline muscle then this can be a useful book to appreciate and learn from other peoples stories of self-control and self-discipline.

I did notice some errors. in one chapter Ryan talks of Pompey Magnus and quotes a year of 66AD which is hard given that Pompey was assassinated in 48BC.

This irrelevant comment does nothing to undermine the brilliance of the book and the humanity of the examples. I admire Holliday's work greatly and what he contributes to modern Stoic thought.

I look forward to the final two volumes of the Cardinal Virtue series.

What we know about an author affects how we read their books. Ryan Holiday is a young businessman, a college dropout, who lives on a ranch in Texas and writes about things like marketing. Had I know that, would I have picked up a book he wrote about philosophy? Probably not. But I knew nothing at all about the author when I read this book, which is a good thing. Holiday is on a mission to make the writings of the ancient Greek and Roman stoics seem cool. To do that, he tells stories — very much like Malcolm Gladwell, though not as good — using well-known figures like the late Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Martin Luther King and endless American sports figures I’ve never heard of. The stories are often quite good, sometimes even moving. As the author intended, the book (the second in a series he’s writing about Stoic virtues) has awakened my interest in the subject of Stoicism. It has also strengthened my own commitment to increased self-discipline. The writing style is very informal, the examples pretty much all American, but it’s a fast read, very accessible, and you will learn stuff.
