Definitely a very different book from any previous Tahereh Mafi novels. This one is a full fantasy romance inspired by Persian mythology. I'd recommend it for lovers of We hunt the flame by Hafsa Faizal.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Action, adventure, romance & Alizeh being a strong lead!
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 25 mars 2022
Achat vérifié
This was my first time reading a book by the amazing Tarehi Mafi, her style of writing was unique, interesting, and has me wanting to read more about the wonderful world she created in, “This Woven Kingdom”.

Before reading this book, I had heard bits and pieces that went along the lines of “Romeo and Juliet” vibes, royals, adventure, and perhaps dagger to the throat moment. I was fascinated with Alizeh and Kamran, both characters were unlike characters I had read before. Alizeh was a strong character, she possessed such admirable determination that despite dealing with a lot, she was able to persevere through it all. Especially considering the strength and power that Alizeh had within her, she could have easily resorted to it, but instead she was careful and mindful of her circumstances. Alizeh was capable and intelligent, and often times relied on her own skills in order to survive in the world of Ardunia.

While Alizeh was trying to survive and had her own obstacles to overcome, there was also Kamran. Kamran was the definition of, serious, grumpy(to me at least), reserved, strong, and intelligent. For the longest time, Kamran was always focused on being a solider, being a leader among the armies that he led, so for him coming back home to Ardunia was an adjustment for him. Kamran wasn’t someone who could easily brush off things, he always listened to his instincts, and they were never wrong until… he crossed paths with Alizeh. If you think about it, if Kamran hadn’t been around the time that Alizeh managed to protect herself from being attacked, he would have never known about her, but that single moment changed both Alizeh and Kamran’s lives forever.

I found it really intriguing to read how Kamran was so curious and fascinated by Alizeh like, the grumpy guy who usually threatened to horsewhip his minister a.k.a. his friend, Hazan was suddenly soft spoken, gentle, and mindful of his behavior around Alizeh. You could tell that Kamran was conflicted about his feelings regarding Alizeh because while he was awed by her beauty and skills, he also had to consider the prophecy his grandfather spoke of. Likewise, Alizeh was not sure about Kamran, the mere sight of him triggered memories of what the Devil showed her (the vision of Kamran). Alizeh was careful around Kamran due to her fear of getting caught, arrested by the magistrates, but she also couldn’t help feeling some type of way around him.

I will say, I found the beginning to be a little slow, but only because there was certain information that needed to be explained which, would later prove vitals to the plot. I feel like once I read that there would be a ball, I got really excited and was looking forward to that part of the book. Let’s just say, the scene with the ball was both eye opening and had lots of big reveals I didn’t see coming. Normally, you would think a ball would involve a romantic dance between the main characters and some witty banter, but no, in Alizeh and Kamran’s case, there was murder, deception, plot twist, and big revelations.

Towards the very end, I was surprised and intrigued by what ended up happening. The way the book ended was very much a cliffhanger, and a part of me was like, “Noooooo I NEED TO KNOW MORE!” But it’s ok… for now… I guess. I enjoyed the ending and with all the drama that occurred, I was loving it. Although now I’m curious to see what will happen to Alizeh in terms of her fate, and with that truth bomb Cyrus dropped on her at the very ending, Alizeh wasn’t the only one who was shocked.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, the world building was fascinating. Alizeh was such a unique character that kept me intrigued and I admired her resilience and determination, as well as her strength. I kinda liked Kamran’s serious attitude, but also how he was utterly captivated by Alizeh, came off kind of insta-love but I thought it was sweet that way Kamran was so affected by Alizeh’s presence *me swooning. If you love fantasy, unique world building, action, adventure, and romance, this is a great book to read.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Tantalising narrative and interesting characters
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 11 février 2023

Not perfect but the protagonist (and even the few key characters) are well drawn but there are too few to fully support the narrative. The decriptions are reasonable but hardly fully drawn or deeply evocative, but they do find a certain neat and attaractive balance. The lost princess theme is very well done, detailed and fully drawn; the confused general-prince less so; The underworked 'minister' (more like an equerry or ADC) was very sketchy. There are few other characters that get any colour at all. The world building was never more than a work in progress.

Princes and Ministers running their own errands, following and staking out suspects. The King acting on thin assumptions, personally supervising hired mercenraries in a bungled palace arrest. Sloppy dialogue and procedure in a national defence exectutive meeting. Sketchy Ball descriptions.

These are weaknesses but I was gripped

Recommended (4.5 stars) at £2.99. The sequel at £5 however, I am not sure to buy

2,0 sur 5 étoiles DNF @ 35% for being poorly crafted

So disappointing. This book has everything I love about YA fantasy, but not a bit of it worked. I’m so frustrated with at this point that I feel like banging my head (as compared to my phone) against a wall. This could have been so good, but it just wasn't.

It’s completely overwritten, purple prose in all directions and very stilted. And I say that as someone who loves well-written, dense, descriptive prose. The dialogue especially was bad (and again, I love formality in dialogue. Witty, descriptive dialogue makes my heart sing). Nothing was clever or witty, just stilted. The only character who the formal/stilted dialogue fit was the King. Everyone else read as if they were eight-year-olds playing British-Royal-Family make-believe.

The world could have been fantastic, but it made no sense. The heart of the problem is water. The land is drying up, 1/3 of the nation sits fallow because there isn’t water to keep it alive. The Prince just returned from a months long water-caravan journey to bring back water. The beggar-poor heroine is endlessly taking baths and washing things. Then days later, it’s snowing and moments after the snow, it’s raining so hard that the heroine can’t see three feet in front of herself when outdoors. That’s a lot of rain. Why exactly did the prince travel to collect water? And how could he have possibly transported enough water back, caravan-style, to make a dent in the needs of a people numbering in the millions? None of it makes any sense…

Another example. The Prince gets caught wandering alone in the city. He does something kind to a young boy, which for some reasons causes the entire city to riot. (I never did understand why the people rioted over this.). The Prince’s servant is furious that the Prince risked his life to go out alone. The King is even more furious. Then the King sends the Prince out into the city alone to follow up on what happened. The servant meets up with him and there is no discussion of the Prince putting his life in danger by being in the city alone. Say what?

Or how about this... The heroine is Jinn, a race of super humans that are stronger, faster, etc. than regular people and can make themselves invisible. For some reason, they are the lowest-of-the-low in society. I kept wondering why they didn't solve their problems by making themselves invisible and using their super speed/strength to kill the king and the other overlords...?

Overall very little happens in this story. The Heroine and Prince are pretty passive and instead of doing things spend lots of time being mundane while telling the reader about the world, the characters and, the problems.

Heroine ruminates while cleaning floors and windows.

Prince lays on a forest on a rug doing nothing as he needs some quiet time, which he uses to remember (so backstory) the events that happened earlier in the day. Such a weak form of writing. I want to live the story not be told what had happened off stage.

The funny thing is that in the moments where the Heroine and the Prince are actively engaged with the world (beyond cleaning things or walking around), the prose get better and the story caught my attention.

Heroine is a Mary Sue of the worse variety. It’s a Cinderella story (even has a magical creature loving on her while she scrubs windows). Heroine is so kind and thoughtful and stands-up-for-the-little-guy. She sews beautiful clothing and takes whatever abuse is heaped on her shoulders without complaining or thinking evilly of her abusers. She’s also stunningly gorgeous (even in her half-starved, abused state) but doesn’t realize that about herself (Ewwwww!!!!). She’s never looked in a mirror even though it’s her job to clean a house with 117 rooms. How does she clean the mirrors (which do exist in this world) without looking into one? So unrealistic.

The prince is supposed to be broody and angry, but he came off as naïve to me for someone who was supposed to have been spending his time leading armies. The broody/angry comes and goes as if convenient to the story.

And one last thing that drove me nuts. The author uses the words Boy, Young Man, and Man interchangeably on the same page for the same person. So. Confusing. A boy (or boys or girl) is not the same thing as a man (or men or women).

Definitely a pass from me. So which I could say differently.

Le produit multimédia n'a pas pu être chargé.
Ainda tô pra ler a saga Estilhaça-me da autora mas não pude resistir quando essa edição capa dura entrou em promoção! A edição é linda, a jacket é tipo laminada.

Acredito que vou gostar bastante da história, a sinopse me deixou muito animada.

A entrega foi dentro do prazo e o livro chegou certinho (só com um amassadinho nas pontas da jacket, dá pra ver no vídeo).

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Amazing World Building

Amazing world building. Such a fabulous read full of mystery and intrigue. Only gave 4 stars as I personally thought parts were quite long winded and found myself skipping whole paragraphs and still getting the picture of each characters thoughts. Again, just a personal opinion. Book was very well written and I’m excited to read the second!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A uniquely crafted romantic tale inspired by Persian mythology.

In a land that still seems to recovering from a war and bloodshed, humans and jinn people coexist with the latter viewed as a inferior. A lost heir to the jinn throne leaves among the humans disguised as not to be found, as she is been hunted through her life, until she can not anymore.

A tale inspired by Persian mythology, with a lyrical and poetic voice.A plot that was almost addicting and upredictable. The fantasy elements of Persian mythology, great and complex characters and poignant and delightful romance create a fascinating universe that I cannot wait to read more about.!

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Fantasy escapism at its finest
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 13 mars 2022

I’ll be the first to admit that my favorite genre the past several years has been young adult fantasy romance. There is just something about it that, when done well, absolutely hits for me. The problem is that recently the books being pushed under that genre just haven’t worked for me. They’ve felt hollow and soulless. This Woven Kingdom was one of my most anticipated releases for 2022 and I was afraid I would have the same issues with it.

I should never have doubted Tahereh Mafi.

This book is absolutely everything I love in young adult fantasy romance. We have our female protagonist, Alizeh. Alizeh works as a servant in a prominent household and tries only to keep to herself, do good work, and be left alone. Of course, that is not how it turns out otherwise it would be a very boring book. She keeps finding herself hunted and in trouble no matter how hard she tries to keep her head down. The poor girl just wants to live in peace but peace is not something she is going to find.

Instead we are in a world of Jinn and magic that sits on the brink of war with an ailing leader at the helm and, obviously, our budding love interest is the prince of that realm. Kamran is an interesting fellow in a “took many hormones, too little space to put them” kind of way and he only has eyes for the mysterious Alizeh. He manages to be both a hard edged, murderous creature and a big ole soft dumplin. Honestly, he seems a little confused and out of sorts about what he wants in life and is struggling to make sense of the difference between his place and what he wants for himself.

Of course there are enigmatic shadowy figures that you just know are going to have a bigger part in the story later but there is some solid groundwork laid for those characters here in the first book of this trilogy. Especially Cyrus. I cannot wait for more Cyrus!

Overall, I absolutely devoured this book. It had the romance, magic, and high stakes that I love in the genre. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 for a couple reasons. One being that that world building wasn’t very fleshed out at all but I feel like we will likely get more information on that in the next book. Also there were a couple of characters that took up considerable page space but ended up being little more than window dressing which I found a little frustrating. But, I loved this story and will be scooping up the next book in the trilogy the MOMENT that it comes out.
