I almost abandoned the story at around 30%, because the banter just went on and on and on. I liked the FMC, Vannah, with her strength, confidence, and sarcastic tone, and the MMC, Landon, with his grumpiness, bad temper, and equal talent for sarcasm.
The problem is that the dialogue went on for so long that the quips and witty retort began to make no sense in context of the larger conversation. It started to seem like the author just wanted to get one more line of dialogue in that she found amusing.
I would have preferred to cut some of it and show us the growth of their relationship in different situations, like meeting family or meeting people at the event they went to. As it was, the incident that separated them before they had admitted to themselves that they were falling for the other came so suddenly and was written as if it were the MMC‘s fault when we know that the FMC was as guilty.
Actually, it wasn’t until shortly before they got mad and separated that I became more interested in the book. The FMC really knew how to hold a grudge and I think some readers will find her a little too hard for a romance FMC, but I loved her. On the other hand, I think the MMC‘s personality changed too fast after their breakup. That said, I enjoyed watching him try to get her back while he was still being a bad tempered jerk.
Sex scenes were OK, but their banter carried over into the bedroom, and what was referred to as dirty talk was just more amusing one another. I can’t swear to it, and I’m not going to go back and look, but I think the author refrained from any true obscenities. I don’t remember the F word being used or vulgar words for body parts that you often see in romances. But I can’t guarantee that.
Definitely no cheating, no spanking (maybe one swat), no humiliation, not dark at all.
This was a pretty quick read. Landon and Vannah have an antagonistic start due to them both being strong minded individuals. Neither of them wants to back down and given to the other. What starts as a game develops into one with higher stakes for both of them. It’s an interesting concept.
