4,0 sur 5 étoiles Unique and Phenomenally Well Written

This is a superbly well laid out novel. Profound characters that come and go, some never return. An uncanny ability to evoke multiple cultures, including American, that had me return to the first page to verify it wasn’t written originally in English (it wasn’t). The plot is bizarre but developed with utmost seriousness that it turns a science fiction piece into a philosophical one.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Literary fiction from The Twilight Zone.
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 26 novembre 2022

I read the translation from the French, but perhaps you'll feel more daring? A Paris to New York plane comes through an unprecedented storm over the Atlantic and calls in a Mayday. The problem is that the same plane, with the same transponder code, crew, and passenger list, landed several weeks ago, largely unscathed.

The authorities enact a plan for dealing with unprecendented occurrences. They then call in scientists and philosophers to explain how this might have happened

The book is not so much science fiction as magical realism. What are the implications of the possibility of duplicating things and people? Who or what might have done this?

The initial third of the story gives a chapter to each character by way of introducing them. They're ordinary people with sometimes complicated, if ordinary lives. What will it do to those lives when there are two of each, and perhaps only one wife, one set of kids, one house, and one pension?

We're introduced to each key player in separate chapters before the real story gets underway and they ultimately come face to face with, themselves. Will they get along? Despite the resource competition? Would you? How will the authorities treat them?

Summary: Intruiging, then rather thought-provoking. Like existentialist philosophers dissecting a Twilight Zone episode.

I enjoyed the concept, the writing and the interweaving… but hated the ending. Made me think about the nature of self and the prospect of duplication!

4,0 sur 5 étoiles A strange, thrillingly fast-paced, unputdownable page-turner
Commenté au Japon 🇯🇵 le 29 juillet 2022

This is a novel which is based on the "wormhole" or on "string theory".
This's dealt with suicide and resurrection in a sense like Christ. Therefore,
you may not necessarily perhaps read it easily. Besides, you may think that
"Universe physics" or "Evolution theory" could find a solution for this novel's
problem. However, I believe Buddhist's thinking way of " nirvana", that is,
the breaking of the cycle of birth and death. will be useful for reading it.

I've much enjoyed this novel. I really hope that many people will read this
novel, too. Because this will help us how to live a life when you would
suddenly face unexpected, unimaginable problems living in the future.
This novel is one of the superb philosophical novels, too.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles A Disappointing Page Turner
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 5 novembre 2022

I'll start ny saying this was undeniably a page turner - I couldn't wait to find out more and I read the book in about 6 hours. It certainly was food for thought in terms of existence and reminded me of the aliens playing marbles with our, and other universes inside each marble, so to suggest that we're all a simulation but the consequences of being so are no different to if we believe we are alive, or to believe they are different because there is no reality to affect so why bother, is an interesting concept and I think that is the singular thing that may have you thinking long after finishing the book, however the concent itself left alot to be desired for me. The individual stories were interesting by themselves and I did wonder at the start if this was a book of mini stories until the threads began joining them together, however there were too many of them. I, like others here, had difficulty remembering who they were everytime their story was picked back up later in the book, although a couple of characters were easier to remember than others. What I found disappointing was how easily 'government' integrated them into society. It was almost no questions asked and I just found that unbelievable considering how we were led to believe the American president was the 'the' American president. The fact that the Chinese plane only got a brief mention a couple of times was also disappointing. I was left empty in that and thought what was the point in mentioning it with no exploration, and it was at this point that i began to get bored with the book and my interest was no longer a gripping page turner but a 'I just have to finish this now' thought. As for the ending, I know some people enjoy a book that leaves the reader to formulate their own conclusion, but even though I read what I thought that last inverted pyramid of words was saying, it left me feeling like I'd wasted those 6 hours of my life for nothing which is unfortunate as I personally feel so much more was required to make it a more plausible and so thought-provoking read.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Not what I was expecting!
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 5 octobre 2022

Hands up if you thought this was a thriller and ended up with your brain twisted up like a pretzel? Firstly, I'd like to say that Adriana Hunter's translation is exemplary. This cannot have been an easy text to work with. Herve Le Tellier is clearly a highly intelligent dude who has done extensive research. I highlighted many quotes and passages for further reflection and felt that this was certainly a fine work of literary fiction. A great deal of the book is spent exploring the characters. Each chapter is almost like a little short story within itself. The characters' backgrounds are extremely diverse, which makes for an intriguing read. I don't wish to give any spoilers but suffice it to say, the scientific stuff slowed down the narrative considerably and left me feeling like a thicko. If you understand it, then I imagine it's all very exciting. I loved the clear parallels with a former President. I did enjoy the book but it absolutely was not what I was expecting and I left it having more questions than answers. Maybe that's the point. I think 'The Anomaly' would make a good book club choice due to the potential for some riveting discussion. And if someone could explain the final page to me, that would be great!

I have read similar books that also contains a plane reappearing but this one is worth a read. Airfrance 006 lands a second time but how and why can you explain if you had to.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles That’s great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane…
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 3 mars 2022

The Anomaly is tremendous fun. It doesn’t reach the heights if the greatest science fiction, but it is original, entertaining and enjoyable while it lasts.

It starts with chapters dedicated to a series of characters with nothing in common except they experienced turbulence while on a transatlantic flight. They include a ruthless hitman who lives a double life as the owner of a vegetarian catering business, a troubled author, a hot shot lawyer working for a questionable business, a disturbed veteran of overseas wars, a gay rapper, a film editor in a decaying relationship with an older architect, a terminally ill pilot. We are also introduced to two geeky mathematicians, Adrian and Meredith, circling around each other on the edge of a relationship.

Author Hervé le Tellier has fun while setting up his characters, while also allowing some more serious and darker currents to flow. He uses the troubled author to show the ridiculous pretentious side of the French literary establishment. While geeky mathematicians might seem a relatively easy target, treats them with affection, and, indeed, Adrian and Meredith’s first reactions to each other are an absolute delight. I also have to say, I never though I’d care so much about the fate of a pet frog. On the dark side, there is the cold blooded assassin, questions about corporate morality, homophobia in the world of hip hop, and a disturbing section about child abuse.

All of the stories are brought together in the central concept of the book (pre-publicised in the blurb, so no spoilers here), when a plane carrying the characters (excluding our mathematicians) flies out of a storm on its way to land in the US. The problem is that the same plane, with the same crew and passengers landed 106 days previously and all on board have since carried on living their lives for three months.

The rest of the book is then concerned with the questions of what the authorities will do to deal with the situation, how the individuals will react to meeting themselves, and what caused the anomaly in the first place. The authorities range from a statesmen like Macron, to an unnamed but obviously second term Trump, who is portrayed as an idiot out of his depth rather than a malicious nationalist, and a predictably secretive Chinese government.

The greatest weight is given to the individual stories which explore a range of responses, how does a secretive killer react to having himself around? How do those in relationships deal with the inevitable jealousy? How do the extra three months of those on the original plane alter the situation? Can mistakes be corrected with the extra knowledge?

In terms of the wider picture, three possible explanations for the duplication of the plane are explored, although the “true one” is quickly evident. It is here that I had my one major quibble with the book. Le Tellier’s choice to concentrate mainly on the individual tales left me feeling slightly dissatisfied. Not fully exploring the wider implications (even though the explanation is fundamental to the denouement) leaves the book, to my mind, with a bit of an unfulfilling vacuum. Also while I am at it, I didn’t really see the point of the child abuse storyline, there is no depth to it, which makes it seem rather exploitative.

However, overall, if one accepts Le Tellier’s choices and takes the Anomaly for what it is, a flashy, fast paced thriller based on a highly original premise, it certainly delivers. Coming soon to a cinema near you (I would expect).
