A Hard to Put Down Read

This book was that confusing read that I wanted to not enjoy, but then I had trouble putting down and almost want to read the next series. I love a good Hades and Persephone retelling, but the first half pushed the line in consent a little too much and I almost didn't finish it several times. I did like the overall concept and plot. It was steamy and Hades and Persephone had chemistry the second half. I felt the timeline was a little funky - it read like a much longer timeline and then was a ridiculously short time period. Still might read Zeus' story, but haven't decided yet.

Good God, I love this book so much. It is actually a 3 books bundle that tell the story of Hades and Persephone. It is one of the best retelling I ever encountered and I am obsessed with this entire world Amelia created.
We have the complicated story of Hades past, his anger, his demons and his vulnerability, and we have the innocent Persephone, her strength, her heart and her kindness. We have the kind of shadows and his summer queen. Amazing pair 💕
This book is a masterpiece.

Compiling the King of Shadows trilogy, but also including new material and the epilogues! I love Hades & Persephone!! Dark, stormy, a little twisty, and definitely suspenseful. I love this series that brings us into the world of Hades, Demeter, Zeus, and Poseidon. You want to sink into this dark, twisty world!! I love the additions that Amelia added to make it more cohesive with the rest of this world.

Binge the whole Hades & Persephone saga in one sitting!!!

Book One:
Modern take on Hades and Persephone with all the heat...and dark...

I have always been fascinated by the Hades & Persephone mythology. (So much so, that my bestie and I named a kitten we rescued Persephone due to a shared custody situation.)

Persephone has been sheltered by her mother her entire life. She has reached the point where she wants to escape. To experience things. Her fascination with the New York Public Library...I love it.

She has been taught that Hades is dangerous. That he will be her end.

So when she finds herself throwing herself at his mercy to save the boy she was meeting, she has no idea what she's in for.

Hades (Luther) rules his world with an strict hand. Everyone has given themselves over to him in exchange for something. Little does he expect Demeter's daughter to end up in that position.

He is fascinated by the innocent Persephone. He finds himself thinking of her more than he ever has for anyone.

They are both drawn to each other. He senses her darkness. She finds herself wanting him to do those dark things to her.

Definitely a fantastic modern take on the myth...and a much more adult take on it as well.

Dark, dark, dark. Love the dark.

This is only the beginning. Ends on a cliffie.

Introduction to the rest of Hades dysfunctional family.

Book 2:
Persephone is so much more than expected...

We open on a flashback to a rebellious moment that foreshadows Persephone's future. And a reference to the Fates.

Forward to the present, Hades is dealing with the aftermath of Persephone's kidnapping. He knows it was Zeus. The order of things is about to come tumbling down...

Meanwhile Persephone discovers her captor and Hades AND her mother are all connected...closely...

...but she still wants her Hades. He definitely wouldn't be happy she's in a whorehouse.

Lucky for her, he does something he rarely does...

...and so a chain of events is triggered...

In the meantime, we learn more about Hades, why he prefers the dark, and the way things are supposed to be.

Persephone goes from a sprouting bud to full bloom by the end...she is ready to lead her people to war. She and Hades are darkness and light.

Loved it!!

Book 3:
Hades and Persephone go to war for love!

The fantastic conclusion to this amazing retelling of their story.

The war comes to the mountain. Zeus attacks. Poseidon makes an appearance. (Love this take on him! Please, please, please tell me we get a story for him too!)

More backstory...Demeter is one cold mama.

I love this story even more now that we've gotten to the conclusion. No big surprise this is one dysfunctional family, but Hades & Persephone are starting their own HEA. Persephone has given Hades a silver lining in his darkness. Hades has helped Persephone find her strength.

You'll want to move onto Zeus and Poseidon's worlds next!!

Up Front...this is a very DARK (in more ways than one) romance. It is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, nor is it light, funny or sweet. It's the very edge of abuse, and the Hero, to me, crosses a line...but so does the heroine.
Yet there's something that draws the reader in...and that's why the high stars for me.

The heroine, P, is very naive, but then she's been very sheltered her whole life and filled full of untrue things. It shows what happens to young pp only exposed to one way of life and 'truth'.
Hades has been horribly, brutally abused as a child, and I can understand his actions. he doesn't know love, and has no idea how to give or receive it. He also has a medical condition (this was a BRILLIANT twist on the Hades legend...I loved this twist and it was well handled in every way, consistent and well done)

SPOILERS:
The 'show the guy' and window/balcony scene was a bit over the top for me. It seemed way beyond cruel. There's A LOT of cruelty in this, but P does, in her way, crave and almost need the spankings, etc. And hey, that's a kink some ppl have so I don't worry about that. But that scene...was beyond spanking. At no time did P or H indicate P liked having ppl watch her...and it felt so wrong-- just a hair from rape, and that was troubling.

It's also way believable he'd use sex to dull his pain. Many do. I have migraines, so I get this. And P WANTED to help. So there at no time rape or no consent beyond what I've mentioned. Yes, rough, very rough sex, but again, that's a kink for some, and whatever floats your boat, ehh?

But the reason for the high stars...I love how their relationship grows and develops. We don't get all the reasons and stories behind either character (unless you read ALL the books in this series), but I can truly see how they fall in love, the sacrifices each makes for the other, and the 'whys' behind their motives and actions. It becomes a beautiful love story and also one of growth and wow, does each of them change and grow from the start to the finish. I was rooting for them and I honestly couldn't see how the heck these two could be together and allowed to love. The end wasn't at all convenient or implausible.
And omg...he gives her a LIBRARY. I fell for him for that alone. She didn't even tell him and he gave her, no restrictions, no conditions, just all for her, a whole library, and all the time in the world to curl up and read. That's a HERO.

So...if you can't get past really rough consensual sex, you aren't going to like this story. But I did. Well done, Ms. Wilde.

This is the Persephone and Hades story I have always wanted every time I read the myth. I've read other retelling, but this was the one already in my soul waiting for Amelia to bring it to the light.

I blew through this trilogy in the last two days.I couldn't put it down, reading until I fell asleep and picking it up the next morning. Persephone ran away from a very sheltered life, only to be hidden away by the very man her mom warned her about. Hades. Hades has painful struggles and it really made me feel for him. Also he feels like he's a bad guy and that the world is against him. But he really has a caring side. And Persephone finds such a strength within herself. They both grow together and bring out the best in each other.

I not only loved the action, the romance, but also the way this was written. It was beautiful and poetic at times. I loved their story, and the little bit of magic sprinkled in.

I love the retelling of these Greek gods, including Christ and God.
The modern and yet the same story. I was glad Zeus and Demeter story retold
I would read for hours then, then go reread what I just read . Go get my mythology Greek book. And have a good laugh. I really ENJOYED this series.
I am a fan ,you got me . I didn't know when this series was published , but you made 2023 a good start. I cried happy tears in the end because the brothers
Love and Needs each other. I will continue to read series and more .

I came into this knowing it was a dark romance and expecting it to be a retelling of the Hades and Persephone Greek myth. I was in the mood for a bit of toxicity so I didn't mind the borderline abuse packaged up as supposed bdsm/kink. At first I was enjoying it but as time went on and I saw that this retelling wasn't so much a retelling as it was just using the names of the gods as characters but doing something else entirely with them, I started to grow bored. It got to be so much that I became sort of disinterested in finishing the book by the time I got to part three. It felt like it was just dragging on.
Some things were cleverly included. The relationship between Persephone and Demeter immediately hooked me. Hades's medical condition and need for sensation to momentarily dull the pain was also a good move. I just couldn't continue to enjoy the read after a certain point. I'm not even in the mood to bother trying to finish it anymore. It's just not doing it for me and I'm a little disappointed. I wanted to love this retelling but it just felt too far off from what I came for. 💔
