I ordered Notes from a Small Kitchen Island based upon Diana Henry’s Instagram posting. What a pleasure it’s been reading Debora Robertson’s witty, engaging essays, especially “How to throw a party without losing your mind”, or “Busy doing nothing: The Weekend Kitchen” or “How to Cook on Holiday”. A heavy duty pan on holiday works for eggs & bacon in the morning as well as a spectacular, delicious Tarte Tatin. Debora’s humor, down to earth advice, interspersed with her musings on the sublime pleasure one derives from puttering around the kitchen makes for a delightful read. I am adding pickled grapes to my cheese plate and willing to try Fox Reformed Smoked Haddock in Tarragon Sauce- an alien dish to a Californian. Thank you.

I love this book! Delightful recipes & very funny stories. When it comes to cookbooks some authors take themselves very seriously, not Debora! She’s hilarious. I read it cover to cover & then went back to mark up all my favourites. A lovely book.

Appetite is different to hunger. Why is it when you’ve got menu plan and you’re so hungry you just can’t decide on what to eat? Be it, from a bundle of your favourite takeaway menus in the kitchen drawer, flicking through your favourite cookbook or staring vacantly at your full fridge and cupboards. This is the kind of book that’s always going to give you the appetite to cook and eat. From a kick ass potato salad dish (I also add anchovies) to sublime lamb, fish, salad and small plate food it’s seriously inspirational stuff and just makes you super hungry. If you like Val Warner, Lindsey Bareham, Diana Henry, Barefoot Contessa, Nigel and Hugh then this is your kind of food. Delicious stuff.

Inspirational story teller. Its not just a recipe book it's a book that takes you on a jounery that gives the recipes a depth of ownership. For example I love chapter three, Accidentally Turkish it sound like the beginning of a play. Its these moment's in Debora Robertson life that take you on afood journey. The recipes are easy to understand and a joy to cook. You can travel the world within the safety of your kitchen and discover the heart of the home really is the kitchen. So buy it buy it for yourself buy it for friends.

We follow Debora's writing, so once pre-ordered, we waited eagerly for our book to arrive.
It doesn't disappoint. It is wonderfully written, with witty and charming anecdotes, in a friendly tone. You feel you could just pull up a chair and sit at her table. This is all of course accompanied by beautiful photographs. The recipes are an interesting selection, something for everyone. The type of recipes you can't wait to cook. They all seen straight forward, and those we have made so far have worked out perfectly. The Berry Crostata have become a new favourite. We would definitely recommend this book and look forward, with hope, that there is a second book.

Fabulously written, super recipes, stunning images and a jolly good read, with an injection of humour.
This book has already been lauded by many well respected food writers/cooks and deservedly so.
I was desperate for my pre order to arrive on July 7th to commence reading.
I wasn’t disappointed, in fact I have rationed myself to a couple of chapters at a time in an attempt to extend the maximum pleasure this books gives.
I have cooked/baked a couple of Debora Robertson’s recipes before, the instructions are clear and the recipes have always worked wonderfully with clever little twists and handy tips.
Varied, interesting, covering a myriad of different cuisines and occasions, all backed up and commencing with heritage, family recipes.
Absolute joy in every page.
Something for everyone.
Very highly recommended

Like having dinner with an amusing friend who has all the best stories, but with delicious recipes to boot. I feel certain this book will become a classic in the way of Nigella's How to Eat. Notes from a Small Island Kitchen has such enduring appeal and charm. It's a book I've really enjoyed spending time with and I know it is one I will keep returning to. I really couldn't recommend it enough.

I followed Deborah and the publication of this book on Twitter. Bought it and was not disappointed. As well as approachable, clear recipes, it is just beautifully written and infused with warmth and wit. I like the fact that it isn’t larks-tongues-in-aspic sophisticated, but family recipes (the wonderful corned beef pie) and those of friends are included. It makes me want to invite people round, cook these tried and tested, stressless dishes (there’s a refreshing don’t-worry-if-it-look-different energy) and enjoy good company. And you really can’t say fairer than that. Highly recommended for a fine read.
