**2 Stars**
+Possible spoilers in this review+

Honestly it kinda pains me to rate this lower. I was really loving this book. I was smiling so much. It was sweet and sexy and adorable and had its funny & charming moments. It's the first time in a long time my kindle battery died because I was glued to it too much to go upstairs to put it on charge.

This book was absolutely gonna be a 5 star read for me and that made me excited then it started to dwindle. Look, first of all what soured it for me early on and then returned later on was something that is possibly spoilery so... [ Brendan is a widow but the way he talks of his deceased wife is such an easy out. "We didn't love each other. I didn't have intense feelings like I do for you." Like why can't it be both? He wears a wedding ring for someone long after they are gone, and yet he is so dismissive about her. It's a cheap tactic in my opinion.] It probably won't bother many other people but it bothers me when this is done. The other thing that just ruined it for me is that Tessa Bailey really fell back on some weird norms of masculinity and femininity, I think this is showcased in what is perceived as man = grunty, big and possessive and woman = small, dainty and reliant on him. There was "a real man!" comment or two. But that's a whole other conversation, but the gendering didn't stop. There was masculine back muscles there were "he's so male/ smells so male." There was a "feminine message" and yes I spelled that right. A feminine chair. Etc etc

Then there were lines like:
“It was like a movie poster, with the male lead curling his big, hunky body over the swooning, feminine lady and taking his fill.”

“folds of her femininity,”

“Looking at her across the table with rare male vulnerability,”

I'm not trying to mean I'm really not, I really like Tessa Bailey and her writing but this was too much and at some point it starts to feel like a point is being made but what?? And why??

I had to skim from 70% on because the things I mentioned ruined it for me. And I loved Piper and glad she got her HEA. I absolutely loved her relationship with her sister, honestly some of my fave moments. And yes Piper and Brendan are this lovely mismatch together that works so well. In the end though it feels like Piper gave up herself so she can be someone that Brendan gets to protect.

It's a pity because this book had feelings of pure joy, I was genuinely having a great time reading this! I loved Piper because I loved Alexis Rose's character and growth in Schitts creek but I'd go in with a expectation of very loosely based on Alexis because the growth with Alexis is long and this is naturally a little more sped up where Piper is concerned. Also if Alexis ended up with more of a Mutt type than a Ted type. And if you're expecting a more diverse set of characters, this book is very hetero-normative. I do have to say there's extra layers of depth in this book that I wasn't expecting especially with Piper and her family's past, that added extra emotion to the book.

I wanted to love this and was loving it but it fell apart for me which suuuucks.

Never have I been disappointed in a TB book but this one sadly did.
For me the hero simply didn’t hold his character and often read less than the man he was. Skimmed a large proportion to get to the end.

Decent read but got sloppy towards the middle and end. Felt like the last three chapters were just fillers to make the book longer.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Not as good as Schitt's Creek
Commenté aux États-Unis le 17 juillet 2021

This book is essentially Shitt's Creek fan fiction. The heroine is based on the Alexis character in that show. Alexis is the airhead daughter in the wealthy Rose family from NYC. The family lost all their money and ended up in the tiny backwater town of Schitt's Creek. It's an archetypal "fish out of water" story. It's hilarious. But Alexis is actually the least compelling of all the characters.
In this book, the Alexis character is Piper Bellinger, the rather worthless stepdaughter of a wealthy Academy Award winning Hollywood producer. She is more of a modern day Paris Hilton, an insufferable social media influencer who is famous for being famous. It's tough to get past the first few chapters because Piper is so insufferable.
After Piper's arrest, her stepfather sends her to Westport in the Pacific Northwest. It's not Schitt's Creek. It's way nicer. This is still a "fish out of water" story, almost literally because she meets Brendan, a sea captain. They are opposites, they fall in love, and Piper comes to terms with her shallow self-absorbed past. Her transformation is much like Alexis Rose.
Unfortunately, there was never a moment when I actually cared about Piper. She never evolves into more than a fan fiction version of Alexis. I've read all of Tessa Bailey's books and I'm afraid this is not a very good one. I'm not sure why her book prices have more than doubled. In this case, it is not worth it,

I was so excited to pre-order this book, but found myself really disappointed. It took me a couple days to pinpoint exactly why this book wasn't sticking with me and I realized it's because I don't find myself liking or relating to either Piper or Brendan. Although the author tries to give Piper some redeeming qualities, it didn't feel truly genuine; her character was so immature. And while Brendan was *more* likeable than Piper, I couldn't get into his burly, manly-man attitude. Their relationship felt purely physical and didn't go much deeper than that. It bothered me that Brendan fell for Piper right away - there was no build-up to their relationship and of course they had sex on their first date. I really wanted to like this book so it was a major disappointment for me.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Good and terrible at the same time

I almost DNFed in the first couple of chapters because the MFC was so annoying, airheaded, and unlikable. And she pretty much stayed that way for the rest of the book, but the other characters and the banter between them made sticking with it worth it overall.

First, the FMC, who was a little too riffed off of Claire in Clueless, is awful. There isn’t a single thing to like about her. Maybe if she were 10 years younger, but she’s 28 and a vapid, childish, unremarkable, unintelligent bore who still lives with/off mommy and daddy and aspires to nothing. I didn’t want an HEA for her…that’s how bad she is. The only “positive” thing she has going for her is that she’s hot…that’s literally it and is the reason the MMC falls for her and forgives all of the other awful things about her. It was disappointing to have an otherwise likable MMC immediately falling all over himself just because she’s hot. I felt like he invented the rest of his image of her the same way people typically assume more positive things about good looking people. (It’s true…look it up)

She’s an utter tool…an embarrassing facsimile for someone any woman would want to be. Manipulative and immature, not smart. Predictable and selfish. Deep as a puddle. Top 10 most hated FMC. And the way she handled the LA Weekly thing, her party, and asking her stepfather to come…yeah…she never changed or grew from an inane princess a d the MMC disappointingly wants to keep her that way.

I also hated that the MMC was just so over-the-top into her (and notice how 99% of his thoughts are about her hotness). Couldn’t be mad at her, wanted to spoil her, fell for her immature, pouty routine, thinks she never does anything wrong (eye roll). He became a simpering shadow and not the manly, confident captain he was supposed to be.

I really did not like the way the author handled “the scare” in the middle of the book…you’re melodramatically led to believe something really bad happened to Brendan and then, “psych…actually nothing happened.” It was a poorly deployed and unnecessary dramatic device.

But Fox and Hannah were great and entertaining characters and there are some genuinely funny moments. The dialogue and spice are very well-written, as well. And I ended up liking most everything about the MMC, just not how he was such a lap dog for the FMC.

The FMC of this book was really hard to like in the beginning. I almost did not buy the book after the 'sample', but I have to say that she really redeemed herself. I found her transformation believable and not forced, like with a lot of books in this genre.
I found the MMC's transformation a little harder to believe. He went from not wanting her in town to ready to lay down his life for her in a very short amount of time.
I have read some of the other low star reviews and those things did not bother me at all.
This book is easily a 4 star book (at least), if the author had not blasphemed on every page of this book (or so it felt). Sometimes that was all a sentence was made up of. I will for that reason not be buying another one of her books. #sadanddisappointed

2,0 sur 5 étoiles NOT Schitts Creek
Commenté aux États-Unis le 5 septembre 2021

The blurb said that this book was like schitt’s creek. It was not. No lgbtq+ characters. No people of color. No real depth to family relationships. And the patriarchy was strong in this one. As was all the ownership language and this idea of “male” and “female” as the defining characteristics for attraction. It’s a fun read, like a bad hallmark movie, but it felt like a missed opportunity for something special.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles What happened?
Commenté aux États-Unis le 3 décembre 2021

This book was a joy. It was easy to read, the words flowed off the page. I love these types of stories. There is no crime, no drugs, no one gets physically hurt. It’s more between the H/h and their relationship. Now why my rating? The ending was incomplete. It just stopped and left a HUGE number of questions and unresolved plot lines. Nothing was wrapped up , I like neat tidy bows, and the epilogue resolved nothing except she stayed. Did they get married? What of the children issue? What happened with Pipers mother? I feel like the readers were left missing the final chapter. Not a satisfactory ending. Otherwise, this story is a solid 4 stars
