Great opposites attract romance

**This is book 5 of a series. Whilst it can be read as a standalone title, to get the true benefit of the story and characters, I strongly suggest reading books 1 - 4 first.**

If you have read all the books in sequence, you will have already become familiar with both the lead characters. Not so much Raylan Boone, as he was only in the fourth book, but we’ve certainly encountered Riona Griffin many times along the way.

To say that I wasn’t a fan of Riona would be an understatement. I’m not sure she’s the type of woman that I’d want to call a friend before this book. She certainly sounds beautiful and loyal but her demeanour and character is bullish, abrupt, rude and dismissive.

Ok, so that helps in her chosen career as a hotshot lawyer for the firm owned by her Uncle Oran... and it’s certainly helped her Mafia family and other relations out of more than a few scrapes with the law. Work is her life, and that shrewdness seeps into her personal relationships. She is quick to push people away and Love isn’t on the agenda. By her own admission, she doesn’t know how to love. She respects people and admires them, but beyond her own family... love isn’t something Riona thinks she will ever understand.

When she first meets Raylan in book 4, he’s been drafted in by Riona’s brother-in-law, Dante to help rescue his girlfriend when she is kidnapped. Despite Riona’s immediate distaste for the gunslinging, combat wearing, yet devilishly handsome mercenary... there is already a little spark. He likes a challenge and refuses to rise to her put downs and sneering remarks. Raylan “Long Shot” Boone is not one for backing down.

As the members of her family all start to settle down with their new found loved ones, Riona feels that compulsion to further declare her independence. She moves into her own plush apartment; she even has a boyfriend, but it’s not love. It’s companionship and sex. And in all honesty she could live without him. However, when an attempt is made on her life whilst she is swimming at her apartment complex, her family, especially older brother Cal and friend, Dante insist on her having a bodyguard. And who better for such a task than ex-soldier and all round good guy, Raylan.

Raylan is probably my favourite of the Brutal Birthright men. Out of all the alpha males in this series, he’s the one I’d choose. For a start, he’s funny. There’s a wit and southern charm that makes him immediately adorable. He’s damn hot too which is always a bonus!

You can tell straight from the get-go that Raylan is loyal, caring and warm hearted. Despite every rebuttal and insult Riona or her annoying boyfriend throw his way, he deals with it in a way that is calm and collected. He’s relaxed and contemplative, not a hot head like all Riona’s family but somehow she feels completely safe with him.

Of course, we can see already what is going to happen. As much as Riona tries to fight it, she can’t help her feelings towards Raylan. Trying to tell herself it’s because he has to care for well being, she denies the strongest pull she’s ever felt towards a man. She likes him... much to her chagrin.

Then a devastating turn of events sees them fleeing Chicago. Raylan takes her to the only place he knows he can keep her away from the hitman who has been hired to kill her by a mystery assailant. It will give them both time and space to figure who would want her dead and why.

Raylan’s family ranch is everything Riona would never have dreamed she’d like. The peace, the tranquility. His family are the epitome of southern hospitality and immediately they treat her like family. It’s unfamiliar to her, but she kind of likes it.

Just like Raylan, the Boone’s ooze warmth, kindness and love. Something Riona isn’t used to at all... but the longer she stays, the more it embeds into her. Genuine affection and happiness overwhelming. Seeing Raylan in his own environment, Riona’s attraction and affection for him grows and blossoms.

It’s inevitable that their time on the ranch is going to lead to Raylan and Riona getting closer... but it’s beautiful when it happens. The river and barn scene... wooaahh... “hello Raylan the love God!!” Geez, yes please! Riona is still wary of the “L” word but even she cannot deny that Raylan is everything she wants and needs in her life. She’s finally met her match and she finds her heart.

Now, it wouldn’t be a Sophie Lark story if some kind of threat didn’t come along to pull them apart. But in this book, just when you think it’s over... all Hell breaks loose. I won’t spoil it for you... but it’s a gripping conclusion to a fabulous story about a hardened heart finding the place it needs to start beating again.

Great story, fantastic character growth and a wonderful make lead that made my heart swell. Loved it!! Only one more book to go. Bring it on Sebastian Gallo... Let’s see what you’ve got! It’s got to be a lot to displace Raylan from my “top alpha” title!

I totally enjoyed this book and I hadn't read any of the others but I will be now. It had me gripped from the start and drew me into the book where I could see the places and feel the vibes I love that in a book.

A solid penultimate book

I love a great series to read as the other characters weave in and out of the story and it helps to ground the main characters story. This is the penultimate story and it delivers all the heat and mystery about Riona who has been misunderstood by her family and works to the bone for them and her bodyguard who has been a character in earlier books. Read the rest of the series first in order as it will help for this one to make better sense, however it’s a beautiful story of letting your guard down to let love in.

Ok I'm into this one, I'm not sure why the first few books were lacking but Dante's and then Rionas books have really hit the spot.

I just love the the scene change in this book, it's like part of it became a totally different book to read and it was nice and sweet, and then bah were back.

Riona and Raylan, oil and water. From the moment they met it wasn't a match, a friendship, or any kind of feelings other than disdain. When someone tries to kill Riona for unknown reason, Dante a friend to both of them and "in the life" calls Raylan to protect her, regardless of her many tantrums to the contrary. Raylan, so Southern, the name screams🗣 I'M FROM THE SOUTH. I swear the entire time I was reading this book, I pictured a more muscled, black haired, blue eyed Timothy Olyphant in Justified. Raylan proves to be adept, qualified, and deliciously dominate when he's forced to take Riona home to Tennessee to protect her. He makes her break all her rules, he infuriates her, he lights an inferno in her, and they can't get enough. Just when things seem right the danger is eliminated and she reluctantly heads back to Chicago. Is the danger gone, or just hiding in plain sight and will Raylan get to his red haired goddess in time? Raylan is a dream. His the guy you want to meet you folks, but you can't wait to strip off your clothes for. He's the best of everything. He cares about people, animals, his family, doing what's right, and satisfying his woman. Riona doesn't know how to love. She's hyper focused on career, being in charge of everything, almost anal retentive, but Raylan is her Knight. He saves her from the big bad and herself.

Sophie Lark has done it again. This is a cleverly crafted story. Both characters are individuals. Raylan is beyond hot, tough as nails, but has a tender, protective heart. Even though you would've seen Riona's character in previous books, you don't get to know her very well until she has her own story. She's also beautiful, tough as nails, and fiercely independent. She's also loyal and compassionate, and fiery! By the end of this book you will have a much better picture of both of these characters, and you will love them.

As Sophie herself says, each book is a flavor of ice cream. Even though this is #5 in a series, each book has been different and could be read alone. This one is one I would consider to be more sweet and less violent. It's more of a dance of wills/relationship build as these two character didn't really know each other before. There is still plenty of thrilling danger, but it's danger coming from the outside not between the lead characters.

Warning: this book is beyond steamy. It's not constantly steamy, but when it is, oh my goodness.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book for free, and am voluntarily leaving a review. Thank you to Sophie and her team! Can't wait to see what comes next in this series.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series, so far.

Ms. Lark is very proficient in plotting a good mystery/suspense/thriller. She had me guessing 90% of the time and only once was I able to pat myself on the back for "figuring it out."

I also have to give the author kudos for developing distinct characters throughout the series. There wasn't any repetition - all of her characters felt unique to me. And all of them had believable life events and motivations for their personalities and behaviors.

Finally, I enjoyed the fact that these novels weren't the "dark mafia" type of romances. The novels focus more on the characters' love stories - not the brutality of the mafia lifestyle.

My only complaint are the technical errors - the usual "him and me" instead of "he and I" and the "if he would have" instead of "if he had."

Still, this series has more pluses than minuses and I would highly recommend it to fans of contemporary/"mafia-light" romance.

Raylan and Riona the 5th book in the series is still mafia based if not quite as dark. Riona has managed to acquire a stalker which has become increasingly more dangerous and Raylan takes it upon himself to take care of her and deal with the problem. There is allot of back and forth sexual tension and Raylan is the usual alpha male.

I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.

the reverse grumpy x sunshine has my heart😭👏🏻 riona prickly and stand-offish personality is a perfect match for raylan’s adorable southern charm. i literally adore raylan and have since the second he was introduced to riona in dante’s book. i live for the classic bodyguard story… all of their scenes just make my heart thump. i love how riona realizes that making compromises isn’t a weakness, and i love when she finally lets herself go. raylan just has that cute personality that everything will work out in his favor. i adore these two, and i loved the quick glances into the other couples lives :) i am so excited to continue on with seb’s story!!
