Easy and fast read. But a lot of dragging on and not enough development in the time-frame of the book. It mentions the intensity but doesn't go much into it. Would have liked more. Caught off guard by sexual content and verbiage used. Went into greater detail in this reference. Title holds duality meaning, literally and figuratively.

First few chapters where Beniek is portrayed is quite interesting. But the true story begins with Ludzio starting an affair with Janusz. The author narrating the story in second person point of view 'YOU and YOUR' is not very appropriate. It should have been in first person point of view (I). True homosexual relationship traits are not portrayed here may be because one person is Bi.
The ending should have been more romantic and happy. But it is like an abrupt ending to me.
But anyway thanks to the author that he has at least taken some effort to include romantic incidents in the novel. I wish him good luck in his other novels

It’s just that it wasn’t enough. Getting used to the couples in a book sometimes being the same-sex is one thing, a lifetime of seeing the world through heterosexual couple’s world view was a given. Now that there are many excellent gay writers wanting to tell honest stories about real people, who just happen to be homosexual, is a huge step toward cultural and personal acceptance. Getting over the cultural induced shame is a process, incremental and not guaranteed.

Acceptance of oneself, the limitations of others, and acceptance of life as it unfolds, changing what you can, not forever pushing against what you cannot change, is one way to describe a “ Coming of age” novel. Doing it in a repressed and stunted culture and country only exacerbates a difficult transition. I just finished the novel, I’m hoping a little distance and some reflection will alter how I feel about the protagonist. Hoping that time in a more liberated, more enlightened culture will alter how Ludzio approaches his future and past. I couldn’t say how I would have acquitted myself under similar conditions. At least he’s unfettered to live his life without always looking back over his shoulder, if he allows it.

I should know better than to raise my expectations from all the pre publication praise. It was decent, a slow start, but the second half was solid. Maybe if it hadn’t been looking back, it wouldn’t have felt so detached. Was just hard to get invested.

Really enjoyed reading this. However all it is is a guy who’s fallen in love with someone who can’t love them back. There’s no ending . Or real story? And I’m glad this book isn’t as political as it’s made out to be.

Some of the writing was very beautiful and touching. I recognized the flooding of Innocence and The growing up in the real world. I am hopeful that this is a new world in which people can just be themselves and love who they are.
