This book wasn’t as good as the first. It was still good! But I felt like this was a filler book. Over 75% of this book didn’t progress the plot. There were some key points that did though. I also am super confused about how the mortal world works in this world. Because they make a lot of references to things in the mortal world that I wouldn’t think they had in this world but they do? Like google and certain actors and singers. I am excited for the rest of the series as a whole though!

The story picks up where the first book ends, with Elise being saved from the crazy cult in the woods by Gabriel. On top of trying to find her brother's murderer, Elise now needs to figure out who is the cult master, and if there is a connection between them and the death of Gareth.

This book is very entertaining, and I read it pretty quickly despite being over 500 pages, but the fact that it focuses more on the relationships, and that there is less action than in the first book prevented the plot from really moving forward. After reading over 500 pages, we are still pretty much at the same point as we were at the end of the first book when it comes to Elise's investigation. Sure, there is a new lead and a new suspect, but I still feel that the plot did not progress much for such a long book...

The whole gang war becomes more serious though at the end of the book, and I like that because it means that the next book will not only focus on Elise's investigation. I want to know who killed Gareth, but I was starting to get a little tired of just reading about her trying to spy on people while juggling with the 4 kings. The fact that the gangs are more violent will add tension, and there is a secondary plotline developing about the gangs and their scheming.

Beware some spoilers but nothing major that we don’t already know from book 1 or ZA. I try to keep it vague.

As much as I want to keep reading this series because the sisters put Killblaze in their books, I’m rather frustrated by the pacing of these books. Because as soon as a Gareth flashback pops up or I have to be in a pov I don’t care about, it takes me a little out of the story and I just want to get to the point. Which I know, in a 5 book series is a long time coming. Unlike ZA where I’m interested in all the little world and family building things and the little tangents, here I’m hyper focused on Veronica, I mean, Elise getting her revenge and her men, in no particular order. I know, all in good time.

While I am on board the RH train (more or less), I’m still the most invested in Elise and Gabriel and their clandestine trysts, and we get the least of those in this book? Or that’s what it felt like. More can’t live with you or without you magnetism please. Yes, E and Leo are adorably s3xy and all grumpy sunshiney, and Dante and her have some wholesome + steamy moments (I mean, that club scene for the love of stars 🥵), and even Ryder and E have their moments, I have history with Gabriel plus come on, that pull between them? Because I may scoff at fated mates, but I am helpless against their power over me. I know, the hypocrisy. Also fine, I have serious ZA bias. Even if poor Gabe is very vaguely interesting if we only base it on what we know from this series. Going back to Ryder, theoretically he should be the most intriguing of them all, with his darkness and now the hints of his horrific past and his powers and that sadomasochistic streak, with a hidden gooey center. I mean, dude not so secretly loves Lion King! Like Leon and Dante are the fun and relatively sweet ones with hidden dark sides, Ryder is the opposite. Then why is he so boring? Idk I don’t get it either.

Even with my Gabrielise obsession, I am enjoying Elise’s vastly different relationships with her men, and honestly it’s inspired that at least two of them are actual mortal enemies which is going to present problems for a while but also raises the stakes. And it is so refreshing to see the girl claiming the guys as “mine” for once. Own that power, Elise. Although I do wish they would all just talk to each other and avoid frustrating catastrophes. Then again, where would be the fun in that. But I miss my type A, mega bougie rich, power hungry, powerful ZA babies okay. I keep hoping for more ZA crumbs like a junkie and apparently they get to go there in the next book? Here for it.

It got a little corny in some spots and it's hard to marry the characters behaviors sometimes. It's hard to believe Elise has so many alfa males eating out of her palm, although it's very amusing. The scenes were entertaining with great laughs. I'm enjoying all the connections and back stories to ZA. I like the flashbacks as her brother is still part of the story.

The Twisted Sisters have tortured us again with that cliffhanger! Thankfully I’m really finally am settling into the story. I had a hard time but it’s getting better!

Elise is still a strong character even if I get annoyed by ger constant back and forth about getting close to the Kings but also not afraid to kill them. There is still great humor and the plot is moving along well. Never really a slow point!

The spicy is strong and the tension is hot!

I feel like this book is a bridge to the rest of the story. It fills in a lot of insight into the mysteries going on. It definitely builds the relationships. I just hope these damn sisters don’t make the next book another bridge. I cussed them so much reading Zodiac Academy. I think they are the only two authors in the world that get off on people insulting them. Ugh. On to book three…

The plot still drags, but that’s always expected from these authors. I have my same complaints as always (spelling mistakes, repeated paragraphs that say the same thing, constant character inner monologues that repeat the same things over multiple chapters, etc). The characters are entertaining enough that you don’t care, and the promise of steam is always worth it.
