Has horizontal style writing, not vertical

It isn't what I was expecting. It isn't necessarily a bad purchase, just not something I would've bought at this point in my studies if I knew beforehand more about it. I read a lot of review before buying, and they said it's all "natural" Japanese. I'm not saying it isn't, I'm saying I expected the stories to be written vertically and from right to left, not the American way where it's horizontal and left to right. I have Japanese friends, so I know they write it either way. I just wish I'd seen a glimpse in the book before I bought it, because I scoured the internet and didn't see a thing. I do like that there isn't hiragana above or below the kanji, it makes it more of a challenge. I just wanted to feel a little more authentic, to the roots that is. I hope you find the book more appealing than I did!

Update: it's been five months. I ended up sending it to my language exchange buddy who lives in Osaka and is a native Japanese. The original purpose for sending it was to have her write furigana above the kanji for me since I'm still learning it. She has not had a chance to send it back, so I am unable to provide pictures, but we have talked about it since then. She and her husband both agree that it is not natural Japanese. By that, they explained to me that a native Japanese person would not converse the same was portrayed in the text as it simply isn't comfortable for them. Knowing this, if I could go back, I'd probably never have bought this book. It isn't terrible in itself, as someone did approve of it's publication, but it is simply not something I would recommend for learning Japanese. Branch out with apps like Mondly and websites like Kanshudo . com and textbooks like Minna No Nihongo or Genki or Yookoso and don't waste your money on a book you probably won't read that will probably just sit on your bookshelf awhile like it did mine. The simple presentation of the book gives high expectations, but they're ultimately underwhelming.
My takeaway: I wouldn't recommend this book.

I'll update as I go along, but let me start by saying it is great for mastering a lot of very useful Japanese via listening comprehension and kanji reading. But you're going to need AT LEAST 80 hours of Japanese study under your belt before you can even start to use this book and audio by yourself. Probably 250 hours. On the other hand, if you have a genuinely fluent Japanese teacher by your side who can create their own lessons, this book could be a great jumping off point with just 40 hours of study. This book could be great for a class of students who are just getting into the Intermediate Level. I prefer the idea of learning kanji from the get-go, and this is CHOCK FULL of useful kanji.

Studio la lingua giapponese da due anni e cercavo un testo semplice per esercitarmi nella lettura.
Questo libro non ha soddisfatto le mie aspettative.
Motivazioni:
1) Mancano i furigana il che vuol dire che o si conoscono già i kanji o la lettura diventa praticamente impossibile;
2) il carattere utilizzato per i kanji è del tutto inadeguato, una specie di "grassetto" che sullo schermo si "impasta" e che rende la lettura difficile anche per quelli che si conoscono ;
3) il testo parlato è troppo veloce, (per un principiante, naturalmente) per cui risulta difficile da seguire con il testo a fronte, considerati i punti 1 e 2.
Praticamente inutilizzabile, perlomeno per me.

Overall the book is great, but I think it would be much better if Kanji were accompanied with furigana, especially if it's tailored for beginners. It's rather frustrating read through a sentence and have to struggle to look up the meanings and pronunciation of Kanji I have never been introduced to yet.

Back when I was 10 years old, I had attempted the seemingly impossible: to somehow teach myself to become fluent in Japanese using the internet and whatever other resources I could scrap together. The problem with this approach was that I quickly became unmotivated. With the 30 stories in this book, however, this possibility of boredom is eradicated. Even though I am not very familiar with Japanese, the audio and simple sentences helped me pick up a lot of foundational phrases. I also enjoyed how short and varied the stories were. It really helped to see how the language is used in different settings. I would recommend this to anyone starting out with Japanese.

A cool little collection of 30 short stories in Japanese with audio that you can download via DropBox. The stories are simple and great for Japanese learners.

The only things I didn't like are that the text is in kanji and kana with no furigana so if you don't know many of the kanji you can't easily read along and the Japanese is interspersed with the English which makes it harder to read the Japanese without also seeing the translation. Having the story in Japanese on one page and the story in English on another would have made it easier to read along and try to work out the meaning without the English intruding on the learning.

This collection of 30 short stories will help you solve those challenges. This guide for Newbiew people. This book is created for complete beginners with little to no previous experience in learning Japanese. There is no need to reach for a dictionary each time you encounter words you don’t understand, and you will quickly learn new words as you go along. Written with the right mix of descriptive sentences and simple dialogue, the stories will introduce you to different types of sentence structures. It's as a good learning book forever. Grateful!

Having done the White Rabbit graded-readers along with JLPT5 and 4 kanji in an app, this wasn't frustrating as it would be for a beginner. This is not a "beginner" book. Without furigana, you will be endlessly bouncing between the story and the vocab lists which can kill the enjoyment.

If you are brand new to reading Japanese, obviously grab an app for hiragana/katakana along with basic kanji, then move on to actual Japanese graded-readers, then go on to short story books like this. Starting your reading with this will be an exercise in frustration.

I recently got into the Japanese after finding this show on Netflix called "Terrace House." I was fascinated with the language but I did not know where to start. I found this book and I got to say, it helps SOOO much!! For me, it helps to put the words into a story form. With every short story, I feel like I can keep growing my knowledge of the language and yet still not get bored of it like if I were to start a Japanese 101 class in college. Great buy! :)
