4,0 sur 5 étoiles Better than expected!

Well, what a rollercoaster!

I had heard very mixed things about this book so I went in with low expectations but I was completely blown away!

I love anything to do with super heroes and I'm a sucker for Silvera's books in general.

He is extremely skilled at making his characters relatable, even if they have super powers. He also manages to flawlessly merge modern day New York with the history of Celestials and Specters (spelling it this way upsets me as a Brit haha).

I have a special fondness for Adam's soft characters and so I was a total sucker for Emil and I could definitely relate to a lot of his inner turmoil.

This books also drops bombshells like nothing I've ever experienced. Every time had me shocked but it was always something even more exciting.

It's a very fast paced book and the chapters flow very easily (another common trait of Silvera's books) and this one was so action packed I feel like I was running around New York with the gang myself!

The ending didn't surprise me as such but I'm extremely excited to read the sequel (Infinity Reaper) to find out the consequences of people's actions.

However, as much as I loved Emil and Ness, I did sometimes struggle with Brighton and Maribelle. I empathised with them both hugely but I'm not sure if I actually *like* them as characters. But I'm happy to see more of them and for my mind to be changed!

I also loved the Phoenixes in this book, and more books should include them!

1,0 sur 5 étoiles Good concept, poor execution
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 6 février 2020

This isn’t the quality of writing I would expect from Adam Silvera. It’s juvenile, lifeless and it suffers from cringey dialogue. Theres an excessive amount of characters but not one of them stands out, I found them all very uninspired. The world building is practically nonexistent, you’re thrown into the story expecting to know what celestials, spellwalkers and bloodcasters are straight off the bat and it’s never explained in great detail. The author was clearly desperate to get into the action straight away, I found that the excessive amount of random fight scenes was just a poor attempt to keep things interesting till the end. If more time was spent on world building and character development then this could’ve been much better.

Adam writes really good contemporaries, but this was a big mess. The book has all the fantasy elements, but no structure to them.

- Every second word in the book is Instagram.
- Every thing that happens in the book is followed by a video upload on YouTube 😥
- We have a secret weapon but let's disclose everything on YouTube because I need followers.
- OMG, my best friend died so let's honor him on Instagram, even though I want revenge.
- The protagonist monologues for 80% of the book.
- You see the ending twist coming from miles away.
- No coherent explanation for the magic system, the creatures and the different types of magical beings.
- Zero explanations for Phoenix life cycles, types, origin, how humans find Phoenix eggs.
- Where did the Wands come from?
- Blegh!

Only character who had a coherent storyline was Ness but for barely 10% of book time. Everyone else was downright annoying 🙁

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Expectation is the mother of disappointment
Commenté au Canada le 16 janvier 2020

It was good, but that’s all I can say. Maybe it’s unfair to compare this to his other stuff, but sadly, that’s how it works. Where this one fell short is, I just didn’t care about any of the characters. Maybe it was too many introduced too fast with a complicated world backstory being introduced at the same time. Maybe it’s just that superhero stories aren’t my thing.

The things Adam Silvera does great are here: amazing LGBTQ representation, great blending of supernatural with technology and social media.

But i just didn’t feel the heart here.

Will I read the second? Yes. It was a nice twist there on the last page, and in the second book, I’ll know the world more.

Should you read it? Yes. Because phoenixes are gorgeous and it’s obvious Adam put his heart and soul into this.

I’m just... empty.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Great story, poor execution

Adam Silvera's problems as a writer are perfectly summed up in this book - he has produced a good, solid plot with an LGBT main character and challenged the superhero trope nicely, and he has spoiled everything with poor writing. He has introduced crucial ideas which he fails to explain and forgotten his world-building. The Blackout should have been described in so much more detail, as it is the basis for everything that is going on in this book. We need to know how the Enforcers came to be, how the public regards the two political sides headed by Iron and Sunstar and so much more. After the disaster of 'What if it's us?', this is another crushing disappointment.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Interesting world building, unlikeable main cast
Commenté en Allemagne le 1 août 2021

I consider myself a fan of Adam Silvera. "They both die at the end" is one of my favorite books and I genuinely enjoy his style of writing. So I was thrilled when I learned that he published a fantasy series as well. Sadly this book did not meet my expectations.
Of course there were positive aspects as well. I really liked the setting and the magic system that was introduced. It was easy to understand and stayed constant.
The problems began with the main cast of the book. While I was intrigued by the idea of the "wrong" brother being the chosen one that concept stayed kind of flat. I would have wished for more character development especially when it comes to Brighton.
Over all I liked a lot of the ideas the story had but I couldn't relate to a lot of the characters which made it hard to stay engaged.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Harry Potter + Percy Jackson + YA = Infinity Son

I have loved Adam Silvera for a quite long time now and when I saw, that the book was out I was hyped.

Synopsis:
Emil and Brighton are a pair of brothers living in a alternative New York. While Brighton is very eager to learn about the so-called celestials, people born with powers, and posts about them in his blog. Emil on the other hand does not care about celestials as much as he cares about phoenixes and their breeds. And yet it happens that both of them fall into a world full of celestials, phoenixes and power.

PLOT:
The plot of this book is simple, yet so detailed and complex. Silvera is using not too much and yet not to less plot twists. Every turn this book made, I watched closely and was surprised of these reveals.

CHARACTERS:
Silvera has this agenda his characters are. Gay/Queer and hispanic/latino, yet every character he creates has this own soul and person. The two main characters Emil and Brighton are wonderfully written and the other main characters are following their example. My favourite are Emil, Prudencia and Ness and each of these characters are having such a good character arc, like the others.

WORLD:
The world he made is simple, as it plays in New York but with complex alternative details, such as powerful beings, phoenixes, just as, etc. You could call it a mix of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson put into one universe.

STYLE:
The book is for everyone beginner or daily reader. There is a certain language in the book but it gets explained and one gets used to it very fast.

CONCLUSION:
I have loved this book and these characters and their relationships. I look forward to the second book and am very eager to learn more about that world.
