Short and Sweet Summer Read

This was short and sweet. Jamie and Marcus have known each other for years; they spend every summer together lifeguarding and working at the same bar in Long Beach. Over the past couple years, Marcus has shown some signs that he might be bi-curious but Jamie is reluctant to get involved with another man who is not out and proud. But the connection between these two is obvious and they can’t stay away from each other.

“Jesus, had anyone ever kissed Jamie like that? A soul kiss. That’s what it had been. A once-in-a-lifetime, movie-quality, wrecking ball of a kiss.”

Marcus is the sweetest, most lovable himbo there is. This man alone bumped up my rating from a 3.5 to a 4. The way he had an almost visceral need to be around Jamie as much as possible for years. The way he thought Jamie was literally the most amazing human being in the world. The way he would rather die than do a single thing that would ever hurt Jamie Prince. 👌

“It was impossible to remember a time when he wasn’t trying to get into Jamie’s orbit. Jamie made him feel superhuman. Made him want to be responsible. To make the world a better place.”

“He made a mental note to get on his knees later and thank God for sending him Jamie. For making him the kind of man who could make this incredible person happy. Thank God, thank God, thank God.”

And the scorching HOT chemistry between these two? Phew. You could feel the passion and love these two had for each other. There are a couple of very memorable scenes. And the dirty talk… 🔥🔥🔥

"I wish so many things. But mostly I wish for you."

As soon as I saw that Heat Stroke is available for purchase I one-clicked it immediately! First of all it's a Tessa Bailey book and she's one of my most favorite authors ever!!! And second, I wanted to read Jamie's and Marcus' book so badly since I first met them in Mouth to Mouth. I couldn't wait to see how the brash, muscled big dude Marcus “Diesel” O’Shaughnessy falls in love with smart and sexy private school teacher Jamie Prince.

At first sight these two guys couldn't be more different. While Jamie is confident in his sexuality and preferences, Marcus is not. All he knows is that his heart beats louder when Jamie is around and that he can't stay away from him. But Jamie has enough of confused guys and doesn't want to travel this road again. As much as he tries to put a distance between him and Marcus, he can't deny that he secretly craves his attention.

Avoiding each other seems impossible when they spend every summer working as lifeguards together. And if that wasn't enough, Marcus works as a bouncer at the Castle Gate, a bar owned by the Prince brothers. So the inevitable happens and things get very hot between them. But can there ever be more than that? Jamie doesn't want to be somebody's dirty little secret. Will Marcus be brave enough to acknowledge his feelings and stand by his man?

These two guys made me swoon hard! Marcus was this sweet giant with a big mouth, who was always making jokes and hiding his fears and desires behind them. He was so protective of Jamie! *sigh* Jamie was very smart and confidant. I loved how he patiently guided Marcus trough everything that was new to him. Their love was genuine and yet so fragile. Once they allowed themselves to fall for each other and act on it, everything fell into place.

I can't believe that this is Tessa Bailey's first M/M book. She wrote it like a pro! There was hotness galore, but there were deep emotions too. These parts were my favorite and made me cry so much! I tear up every time I re-read them. I can only congratulate Tessa Bailey on another well-written and fantastic story that I'm putting on my most favorite read shelf. 5 stars

Heat Stroke is the second book in the Beach Kingdom series. The good news is that I haven’t read the first book (Mouth to Mouth) and didn’t need to, to thoroughly enjoy this.

Jamie Prince and Marcus O’Shaughnessy are unlikely friends who work together as lifeguards and at the family bar. Even though these two have very little in common they seem to spend an awful lot of time together. Marcus is well aware of the fact that Jamie is gay and that he is straight, so why the fascination?

Jamie and Marcus are some of the greatest characters I have read. Where Jamie is laid back and comfortable in his own skin, you have Marcus, the stereotypical gym junkie who constantly surprises you with his loyalty and devotion while coming to terms with his newfound sexuality. He was completely adorable. Once they both gave into their feelings they were combustible....

Goed verhaal. Marcus en Jamie zijn lekker aan elkaar gewaagd. Doek deed denken aan de boeken van Eden Finley en dat is een compliment. Goede karakters en echte gevoelens maken dit een geweldig boek. Enig minpunt: Waarom moet ik dit boek op de Duitse site bestellen en heeft Amazon.nl dit boek en vele andere ook niet.? En als ik iets op amazon.de bestel en tegelijk op amazon.nl is het uit van amazon.de sneller in huis. Verschilt 2 a 3 dagen 😐

Wow, I read this one a couple of times over and over again b/c I fell deeply and madly in love with the 2 main characters. The romance is funny as hell, and quite steamy. The supporting characters are well-written and have depth. The issue of depression/failure is a very good depiction and treated fairly here. I highly recommend reading this. I had no idea that Tessa could write a m/m romance.

One of the most romantic books I've read this year. I loved the way they couldn't resist each other and how they were affected by the simplest things--or the hottest ones--the other one did. Marcus was so adorable, and I liked how Jamie dropped his guard down with Marcus. It was really sweet. Besides, the sex scenes are great (I wouldn't expect anything less from Tessa Bailey. She's one of my favorite authors).

Tessa Bailey’s ‘Heat Stroke’ is hands down the best book I’ve read so far in 2019, and that isn’t something that I say lightly. I’ll add to that the caveat that it’ll likely remain the best book I read in 2019, and even though I just devoured it in one sitting, I’m already gearing up to simply plop down and read it from start to finish all over again. It’s just that darn good.
All gushing aside, and be prepared for more gushing since I simply cannot stop when it comes to this book, ‘Heat Stroke’ tells us the story of the middle Prince brother and the gym junkie Marcus that simply can’t seem to stay away from him, the reverse being true, even though the intellectually smart Jamie thinks he ought to know better. Their attraction is real, gritty, so evocative, and visceral. From being reminded of aspects of Jamie’s past, to Marcus needing to figure out who he is and what he wants from life, this book takes you on one heck of an emotional journey, one that had me equal parts laughing and sobbing as the narrative developed. I’m really not a crier when it comes to reading books or watching movies, but I had some tissues handy with this one, you know, just for the occasional sniffle.
There is so much love in this book, and it manifests itself in so many forms. Tessa has done a simply amazing and stellar job of weaving it all together, showcasing the good, the bad, the ugly, and the glorious, with each word, each sentence, each paragraph, each chapter.
If you haven’t already made Tessa Bailey a one-click author for you, do it now; you won’t regret it. ‘Mouth to Mouth’, the first book in the Beach Kingdom series was amazing, ‘Heat Stroke’ was phenomenal, which means that you know book three is going to be spectacular. Hop to it!

There was much I loved about HEAT STROKE.

But Marcus and Jamie are by far the best thing about this novel.

Polar opposite, Marcus the gym fanatic, Jamie the smart teacher – you wouldn’t think that they had anything in common, but underneath the surface was what really counted and there they clicked.

Together they were amazing.

Really amazing!! Their dynamic, how well they understood each other, and the crazy way Marcus and Jamie completed each other was what kept me reading.

Unique personalities are rare and can make or break a book. For me it’s all about great writing and unique characters, and Jamie and Marcus were a fantastic couple. My favorite scenes were when they were together. The pull between them was epic. None was able to fight their attraction, or their ingrained willingness to do whatever was needed to make the other person happy. Jamie’s No always turned into Yes when it came to Marcus. And Marcus was just this big teddy bear who wanted to please Jamie. I could have eaten him up.

So, if this book would have been just about Jamie and Marcus, finding their way without having to worry about other peoples ideas and their homophobic tendencies, especially as it can be found in some families, this book would have been a 5 star. But alas it became predictable. Most M/M books have the same plot. The uniqueness is falling to the wayside, and I feel like the M/M genre is becoming generic – including cookie cutter plots.

Consequently I started skipping the inner monologues, the repetitive thoughts and concerns – I got bored.

But I did not get bored with the sex scenes – wowzer!!!Those were HOTTTT! I’ll be honest and admit right here that I’m turned on by well written M/M sex scenes and the author certainly knows how to write them. Like I said the couple really did it for me. Not only in the bedroom – lol.

Jamie and Marcus deserve a 5 star rating, the rest of the book not so much.

The best thing about this book was Marcus, one of the MCs. He was an adorable mix of stunningly good looks, physical clumsiness, low self-esteem from years of being told he was stupid, but was nothing but kind, caring and so ready to love someone.

That someone would be Jamie Prince, apparently smart, well educated and with a good career. I don't think his character were as well crafted as Marcus', since not much of his supposedly superior intellect was reflected in his internal or external dialogue. Instead the characters' inner voices sounded a bit too similar, in my opinion.

My main disappointment was in the general style of the story, aiming to be sassy but only felt superficial, at least to me. The style reminded me of M/F romance novels, and all the reasons why I no longer read those. There was also a lot of time spent inside each MCs mind, where the constant analysis of every minor detail the other person might be doing/thinking/feeling made the story drag and sometimes felt repetitious.

The take on the coming out theme felt slightly dated compared to other romance books I've read with a similar plot, like it was written back in 2013-2014 and not as recent as 2019. On the plus side were a couple of hot, well written smexy scenes and good UST between the guys, but those alone wasn't enough to carry the story.

There were a handful of side characters from the other books in the series, mainly the brothers of Jamie Prince, but this book worked well as a standalone regardless. My rating is a mix of 4 star elements and eye-roll inducing sections that didn't work for me, but I can see why others might like it more than I did.
