4,0 sur 5 étoiles Stones Story

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. In Prisoner we learnt something about all the boys and how Stone was their leader, now we have his story. He meets Brooke on her sixteenth birthday and then over the next couple of years he keeps taking her - hence the title of the book "Hostage". He has never been loved or cared for and she slowly shows him what it is like. He has never trusted anyone other than the other boys and finds it extremely hard to let her in. She has also had her problems growing up and has to fight her fears of her strong feelings toward Stone. He is hell bent on revenge for what happened to them all and is so raw and wild throughout the book. It was great to catch up with Grayson and Abby and all the other boys. Many of the questions from the other book are answered in this one and the authors provide a great insight into how the boys are feeling. I loved how Stones character is developed through the book and how the authors show the reader all his different sides. This quote totally sums him up - "I'm the winter nobody ever saw coming". These two books are full of emotion and show how a terrible situation can affect people differently.

Stone and Brooke’s story is a dark romance full of mystery and suspense. Annika and Skye take being a hostage and give it a whole new delicious twist.

Stone Keaton’s sole purpose in life is to seek vengeance on those who wronged him and the group of friends he calls his brothers when they were children.

Brooke Carson has been raised in a life of privilege, it is her sweet sixteenth birthday when she witnesses Stone beating up a man from her party, she intervenes and in turn becomes his hostage.

Thinking Stone would kill her Brooke was surprised when threatened to hurt her family if she was to tell anyone about him and then he let her go.

Some years later Stone returns and an unconventional relationship grows between the two as secrets are shared and truths exposed. We see the development of the characters throughout the story.

Stone is a broken and guarded man, he’s a fierce protector of those he loves and committed with his desire for justice. Brooke was an innocent young girl desperate to break free from her suffocating life, together they somehow shared something beautiful, raw and real.

This has a bit of everything suspense, chemistry, mystery, hot sex. It’s emotional, it’s questionable, it’s unexpected and a well collaborated story.

This was not as dark as I was anticipating, although it was a bit gory at times the darkness level was quiet mild. Some parts were a little slow for me but there was enough intrigue in the story to surpassed that.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Not as dark as I expected

Hostage is a loose sequel to the first Criminals & Captives book, Prisoner. However, each can be read independently of one another.

Stone is darker than Grayson (from book 1) but I found that the book was actually a bit lighter. There was more mystery and intrigue in it than in the previous one, as the gang is trying to identify a couple of the key men who ran the human trafficking ring they were trapped in as children. There is none of the on-the-run shenanigans that our first couple went through.

Hostage is a very slow burn romance. When the hero and heroine first meet, she is 16 and he is a decade older. Although intrigued in (and attracted to) each other, the physical aspect of their relationship is not explored until Brooke is an adult. During this period, they only meet a few times, months apart, as Grayson keeps track of her.

There are also a few scenes of struggle and physical restraint that made the story hawt!

There are three main points that have caused me to rate this book as four stars instead of five.

Potential Spoilers ahead!

Firstly, the idea that Brooke’s parents were able to so well hide their destitution while still living the high roller lifestyle publicly is pretty flimsy. At one point it states her mother is working double shifts in a bakery in the next town to keep up appearances in their social circle, but this would never escape notice for long, though it apparently does in the book. The family is on the edge of ruin for years while hiding it from everyone.

It is entirely possible I suppose, but I found that the level of disbelief I was asked to suspend was too much.

Secondly, the identity of Keeper was obvious to me early on.

Thirdly, and most importantly, the ending was way too easy and “light”. Everything just fell together perfectly for the characters. I wish Stone and his boys had roughed Brooke up a little bit in order to get the identity of Keeper out of her. There are tons of dark romance novels out there with interrogation scenes (my favourite is reviewed here!) and it would have been something much more real for the couple to have to work through. As it was, the ending was kinda wah-wah for me. Certainly not dark.

Read the first book in this series which was really gripping and this one was just the same.
Good characters, dialogue and story. I did however find some of it a little uncomfortable to read as Brooke was a school girl although 17 , stone came across as grooming her. When Brooke was 18.5 it wasn't as bad but she was very young and connected to a very broken and violent man who was seeking revenge, she was very impressionable and vulnerable due to her parents position in society and demands. The conversation Brooke had with her mother at her prom was so horrifying but superbly written, the subtle way it's put across just superb. The story flowed really well, sadly though it's too short. It falls into the last few chapters wrapping it up and I wanted more, I wanted the trial, the verdict, the comeuppance.
Definitely worth a look but it deals with violence, rape and murder. very dark but well balanced. Very good.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Suffer through the heroine because boy do you have a fantastic hero in this book
Commenté aux États-Unis le 6 mai 2021

This book reads like two separate novels as you switch POV’s from our sixteen-year-old heroine, Brooke, to our late twenties Hero – Stone. With Brooke, you have a Young Adult novel where she’s barely been kissed, obsessing about prom and agonizing over her domineering parents. This part of the novel you’ll think you’re reading Twilight or something. Then you have Stone, a hardened criminal, gritty, never lets anyone in, who falls in love for the first time. His journey to overcome his past, the achingly difficult hardships he’s faced made me cry. He is described as rock never made smooth, and he is that. He is fabulous. But then he’s paired with Brooke.

With a virginal sixteen-year-old.

Yeah… beats the heck out of me why the authors paired him up with someone this young. Why did I have to read about him kissing and making out with someone below the age of 18? (Sex happens when she is over 18, more on this below). This ruined the book for me.

I read Prisoner, (the first book in this series) then immediately downloaded this book, Stone's story, which was teased in Prisoner, because I couldn't wait to see him get his comeuppance after giving Grayson such a hard time for falling for someone in Book 1.

As with Prisoner, I wanted to give this book 5 Stars and I just couldn’t because of this one huge problem. This book is EVEN BETTER than Book 1 because of the arc of the Hero. The hero and heroine are BOTH fully developed (the heroine was not in Book 1). But I just couldn’t because of Brooke and her age. And her inappropriateness as Stone’s match.

Stones chapters are by far the best part of this novel. His hurdles and how he overcomes them in this book are powerfully moving. The authors are experts in showing his inner conflict with his external actions. It’s fantastic.

The premise is that they meet when Brooke is at her sweet sixteen birthday party and she walks in on Stone beating up one of her Dad's guests. (The party is more for her parents’ rich friends than her). He has to figure out what to do with her. As Stone is a Stone Cold Killer, murder is the only option. But of course, he can't do it. This sets up a mutual attraction and obsession.

The first time they meet she is SIXTEEN. She describes Stone as "a few years older than her" "late twenties." By never giving us Stone's actual age, the authors are trying to disguise a little bit of the huge age gap, but basically Stone is 28ish and she is 16. So 12 year difference. I personally detest huge age gaps like this... never mind that she is below the age of consent. But nothing does happen that first night he abducts her.

However, he takes her on short road trips a few more times over the years, both when she's sixteen and seventeen. They kiss when she's sixteen, and fool around (third base) when she's seventeen. There are only two scenes between the two of them in this time period but still. Sex happens when she is officially eighteen and he's thirtyish.

Due to this age gap, there is very little steam in this book. VERY LITTLE. Two sex scenes, both short because she doesn’t turn eighteen until the end of the book. I’m glad none of the sex happened until she was eighteen, but why, WHY couldn’t they have given Stone an age-appropriate partner?

There was way more sex in Prisoner (book 1 in the series) and I expected much more of it in this book so this was a major disappointment. I mean, it’s Stone, he’s sexy. I wanted more action. But you can’t have that when you have a virgin (I really hate virgin stories).

This is mostly action and investigation into the storyline started in Book 1 in this series. It is closed out in this book making me think there may be no more stories in this series despite there being more males in the group that are single.

I hated that the heroine was so young. She was not the right partner for Stone.

While I believed at sixteen she’d have a crush on him, but after three times of spending like a handful of hours with him each time, suddenly, she loves him? Eh… tough to believe. Believed it on his end… because he’s followed her without her knowing. But not on hers.

She didn’t have the maturity to understand him to the depth that she did. There was no way with her background, she could relate to him. This age gap and her immaturity wrecked the book for me so I couldn’t give it 5 stars. The fact I gave it 4, shows how much I LOVED Stone and how well he’s written. If the entire book was in his POV and he had a partner worthy of him… I’d probably have been over the moon. The chapter where he kisses for the first time… I’ll read that over and over. One of the best things I’ve read in a long time.

Read this book despite Brooke. Because…. Stone.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles brutality and darkness woven seamlessly with sensual romance... I loved it!

4.5 STARS

"Clinging to your killer, that’s a powerful and horrible kind of intimacy. I used to think of intimacy as chocolates and roses and sweet whispered words. But it can be blood and violence and darkness, too."

Hostage is one deliciously violent dark romance. My favorite kind of dark romance is EXACTLY what's delivered on these pages, the kind that is both vicious and brutal yet still somehow finds a way to be sensual and sweet. Stone is brutal. He's dangerous and bloodthirsty and has one goal in mind: vengeance. It's IMPOSSIBLE to see any sort of humanity in him at first, let alone a soft side, a heart willing to love. But that's why this story is so fantastic. There's an integral part of every female that secretly longs to be the one thing that can soften the unbreakable. I believe there's also an integral part of every romance reader who enjoys dark romance that longs to see our heroine become the one thing that makes our anti-hero feel raw emotion after being so impossibly broken. Hostage delivers that beautiful darkness, that twisted journey from hopelessness to hope and IT. IS. EXQUISITE.

There are so many reasons I shouldn't root for this sort of dynamic. The relationship between Stone and Brooke is all wrong. So wrong. Criminal. Dangerous. Illicit. He's her captor. She's sixteen years old. He's a killer. He's terrifying. She's innocent. And yet, after just a few pages, I was desperate to see where this would go. I'm a sucker for this, the potential for a hardened criminal softening for a woman. It's my kryptonite. And no one creates that decadent possibility more superbly than Skye Warren and Annika Martin. From a scene early on where our murderous hero is about to drown our heroine on the day of her sweet sixteen, I was HOOKED.

"It was only ever supposed to be for the boys in that basement with me, but somewhere along the way, she burrowed into my dark heart."

Hostage, though, is far more than a romance. This story is the devastating account of the horrors survived by a band of brothers and how they made it out the other side. These men have demons to slay after what they've endured and Hostage is Stone's war. I was rapt, on the edge of my seat as this meticulous web of sins and horror unfolded, as untreated wounds were cut wide open, as a reluctant romance was born in the middle of all of it. Hostage has been one of my most anticipated reads since Prisoner and it not only lived up to every one of my hopes and dreams, but far exceeded them. I loved this book, loved the edgy dynamic between Stone and Brooke, loved the pain on these pages as much as I loved the blissful romance. Together Skye Warren and Annika Martin have created everything I could've hoped for with Hostage. This story is brutality and darkness woven seamlessly with sensual romance to make for a story that I thoroughly consumed. I loved it!
