3,0 sur 5 étoiles A business woman's autobiography that attempts to teach through her mistakes; it lacks the business inspiration I expected
Commenté aux États-Unis le 11 août 2018
This is more like one person's corporate autobiography than a self-help business book. I somewhat enjoyed reading about how Beth Comstock (former head of marketing and innovation at GE, who also worked at NBC, etc.) brought about change in corporate thinking and challenged the norms. I particularly like how she took chances such as selecting an ad after September 11, 2001 with the Statue of Liberty running that says "We will roll up our sleeves. We will move forward together. We will overcome. We will never forget. ...... A message from GE." This ad went against the stiff corporate culture of GE yet the public loved it.

Throughout this book, the author describes meetings, encounters, challenges, etc. but nothing that I found earth shattering or super interesting. It was somewhat mundane reading.

Interspersed through the text are pages that provide some pointers such as:
- "Success correlates as closely with confidence as it does with competence."
- Get a coach
- Create a monthly bucket list - hold yourself accountable to do things that are outside your comfort zone.
- Build team trust - trust must be earned one action at a time.
- "In change, people have to find their own path. You can't mandate how that happens."

In summary, had I purchased this book, I would have been disappointed. It is not full of the business inspiration I expected. However, as a autobiographical business read it is somewhat interesting even though it was mundane in spots. This gets 2.6 stars (rounded up to 3) from me.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Comstock covers the numerous entrepreneurial initiatives including some outside ventures like Hulu in her book and looks at what it ...
Commenté aux États-Unis le 3 août 2018
Imagine it Forward by Beth Comstock tracks her rise through the ranks of NBC and General Electric (GE) to focus on innovation and how to bring entrepreneurship to the epitome of corporate drudger and bureaucracy. She focuses on the traits and tactics necessary to bring about innovation and how to have an entrepreneurs spirit within a big organization. GE faced a tremendous challenge after the departure of Jack Welch and the subsequent demise of GE Capital that had fueled the growth of GE making Jack Welch one of the most successful CEO’s in the history of corporate America. The new GE had to innovate and find new business that it had never dreamed of entering before unlocking the innovation that had started the company under Edison and blossomed throughout its 140 year history. It had to overcome a corporate ethos of “checking the checkers” and fiefdoms carved out of CEO’s within business units that only could see the P&L of their area. Comstock covers the numerous entrepreneurial initiatives including some outside ventures like Hulu in her book and looks at what it takes to drive change and imagine a business in a future state. Her career which would culminate with being vice chair of GE was about brining the innovative spark to GE that would hep it grown and get ahead of the problems that an industrial giant would face in a world focused on software and consume businesses. Ultimately the book does read more as a memoir then a corporate strategy book but there are great lessons to be gleamed here and plenty of information about GE that often gets forgotten after the Jack Welch era. A very enjoyable read with the right mix of personal stories coupled with lessons learned and an outline of key takeaways helpful to those trying to drive change in large organizations or those starting out on their own about the pitfalls of growing to fast.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles mishmash of memoir/inspiration with not enough of either to make the book work
Commenté aux États-Unis le 6 août 2018
Even though I'm not a "business professional" I'm really interested in books on creativity, time management, productivity, innovation, and memoirs about businesses. I was excited to read "Imagine It Forward" but it really left me underwhelmed.

It's a good book, but as another reviewer mentioned, I believe this book would have been more effective as either a straight-up memoir or if the author dropped the personal aspects of the book (which weren't personal, but the book was full of "I", "me", etc.) and went for straight-up productivity/innovation advice. The way the book straddled both genres was distracting, and it made the author (Beth Comstock) seem less like a hard-hitting successful businessperson and more like she was trying to pitch herself to the reader, which is ridiculous considering her sterling career.

I've read a lot of books by different levels of business leaders, and for some reason, even though the book was about General Electric and NBC- both clearly household names and very established businesses- it felt like I was reading a self-published memoir of someone who maybe had a little experience with some sort of direct marketing business. Even though this woman was in charge of millions of dollars in business and different teams coordinating with one another and life-changing product, she talks about random things like how she bought fabric letters and glued them on to binder for a sales pitch. What?! I get the feeling she had to leave out a ton of information so she didn't step on any toes or reveal the inner workings of large businesses, but unless she was ready to really going into specific details about the finer aspects of collaboration and aspects of her career, then they shouldn't be brought up at all. She literally spent just a handful of pages on these giant deals, skimming the surface, and then dropping a "helpful tip" to summarize it all up. It just didn't work for me.

The thing that really turned me off was the full-page quotes pulled from the text of the book. Every few pages, there's a big blank page with a sentence from the text in a huge font and nothing else. I'm a sucker for quotes as much as the next person, but none of the quotes seemed like motivators to me.

I don't know... the honest truth is that I didn't come away from the book feeling inspired or impressed by Comstock's experiences. I had to keep reminding myself she's talking about GE/NBC. Like I said, it felt like she spent the book trying to pitch herself to the reader, which is unnecessary. I get the feeling she had to leave a ton out to avoid stepping on too many toes, so she filled it with... filler.. The nuggets of inspiration scattered throughout the book didn't hit home, either. Basic conflict resolution stuff.

I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles from an inspiring icon - great autobiographical content
Commenté aux États-Unis le 21 septembre 2018
Beth Comstock is a role model for everyone, boys, girls, men, and women alike. Her personal stories are the most valuable and interesting part of this book. She reveals her failings, difficulties, and accomplishments so that everyone can view the serpentine road to success.

With that said, I was hoping to gain more insights about business and life. Unfortunately, the book does not live up to the subtitle or promise. If you are looking for practical suggestions for how to be a change agent and as impactful, imaginative, courageous, and creative as Beth Comstock, there is not much here. I would recommend a book by Brene Brown or Ben Horowitz for courage, a book by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi or Ed Catmull for creativity, and a book by Dan Pink or the Heath brothers for dealing with change.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Her Story
Commenté aux États-Unis le 15 avril 2019
There is power in parable. Most coaches suggest reading autobiographies and biographies of high achievers. If you find those types of book helpful you will probably enjoy this one. The author details her experiences and perspectives from navigating the corporate culture at GE. She details successes and failures. The lessons learned are presented broadly and generally. I didn't find anything earthshattering in either terms of information or presentation. But there is a definite lack of practical guidance. It is an easy enough read but not one that will enrich your business acumen.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Not a fan - well written though!

I did not enjoy this book. Beth does a good job writing it, but the premise seems way off. Perhaps you will enjoy it, but I won't even be passing it on to another person.
