If this was by another author I probably would have given 3 stars, but had expected a lot more from Allende. I read most of her books and loved many of them. Her usual interesting style and sense of magic was completely missing from this book, the dialog between the 3 main characters clumsy and in parts unrealistic. The many political references become repetitive. The story is quite boring with no suspense at all, the ending predictable. Nowhere near "Eva Luna, House of Spirits " or any of her earlier work.
Well I seem to be out of step with every other reviewer! I have enjoyed most of Allende's books ( notable exception "Of Love and Shadows") but this one smacked of a hastily written pot-boiler. The Guatemala and Chile back stories are cliché ridden and peopled with stereotypes - the mystical grandmother, the rebel priest. One of the rules of writing is SHOW don't TELL. Allende does far too much telling and her writing rarely rises above the banal. Add to this the fact that the plot itself is improbable and the 'twist' at the end is obvious well before the last chapter. Disappointing in the extreme.
Had I known this author would use her book to bash President Trump, I would never have purchased it. I feel for the blight of so many millions of people in this world, but illegal immigration is still ILLEGAL. My grandparents came to this country thru legal immigration, they suffered many hardship in the "old" country, but came here with respect for this country and ready to work without handouts.
I have liked the author's books in the past, but found this one awful. It's a novel that follows three main characters with each chapter exploring one specific character's life. It talks about the horrors of gangs and living conditions in other countries and gets very weird when a dead body in a trunk has to be disposed of. I couldn't stand the book.
I have read and loved many of Isabel Allende's novels. This one was a real disappointment. The plot line was strange and very difficult to believe and the characters were poorly developed. The romantic portion was awkward and the ending left many unanswered questions. Not worth the time or the money to read.
