5,0 sur 5 étoiles An excellent history

This book is a valuable social history, detailing how transgender people have interacted with, and been part of, British Society. Edited by transgender icon and campaigner Christine Burns, it dovetails multiple relevant subjects - each readable as individual chapters - to create a timeline. I recommend it highly!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Based on the bizarre premise that real human lives matter
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 1 septembre 2018

Zealot Burns and her minions write yet another idiotic piece of 'trans' propaganda. Trans Britain consists almost entirely of 'trans' people writing about the realities of their own lives. This sloppy obsession with fact and reality is a blatantly ideological attempt to promote the book's unstated ideological premise that real human lives matter.

We have seen in many other contexts how this "real lives" ideology leads to absurd political demands. In the United States it has led to black people bizarrely demanding that police stop shooting them. In Ireland it has led to women insisting that those making laws relating to pregnancy actually listen to the lived experiences of women and the professional expertise of doctors and midwives.

Sadly, many of these ideologues appear to hold the weird belief that each person has innate human dignity. They want society to uphold that dignity, and allow each person to flourish. In their dystopian vision, people would not be shot for having the wrong skin colour, pregnant women would not die because the law bans simple medical treatments, and gay and lesbian people would not be persecuted. Mad.

In Burns's case, her realist fanaticism means that the book is almost entirely devoid of the brilliant analysis of writers in the Janice Raymond tradition, whose fact base wisely has minimal contact with reality. It's more than 40 years since Raymond produced her famous paranoid-essentialist classic 'The Transsexual Empire' ... but ideologue Burns's realism will consign this tome to the scrapheap of unread, out-of-print works of realism such as the long-forgotten George Orwell's 'Road to Wigan Pier'.

So buy this book just to learn about this whole "real lives matter" thing. It might just catch on ... and you'd wanna know about it, wouldn't you?

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Enjoyable, accessible, informative.

A great read for anyone wanting to get an overview of trans history; this book moves between first hand experiences, the legal development of trans rights in the UK, and grassroots trans activism. Although it undoubtedly addresses what has been a disappointing gap in the current available literature, it is also written in very accessible language making it an easy read for all. Each chapter centres on a different voice, and I particularly enjoyed that they each began with a short profile, meaning that you got a real sense of the perspective behind the writing. The book begins with a bit more of the historical context of what it was like to be a trans person living in Britain, along with discussing some of the more medical elements of transition. It then moves onto discuss some of the political context, activism, and media representation that has paved the way for, and indeed shaped, the legal rights and responsibilities that we have today. It ends with a perhaps more forward focussing look at new directions and experiences of a more modern context in which to come out. Featuring some very well known trans voices and allies, and some less so, I would recommend this book as an informative read for those that have not interacted much with trans history, and an enjoyable collection for those that are very familiar with it alike.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Really powerful, but not very diverse

This book is really informative and really powerful. Telling the stories behind trans people's journeys and educating about the wider context at the same time.

Would wholly recommend if you want to learn "what came before" when it comes to trans issues in the UK.

My only criticism though is that all accounts in the book seem to be from a wholly white, and quite middle class, perspective. It feels like a whole lot of stories and context have gone untold.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Starter for all things Trans UK right up to now!

This is your go to starter for all things UK Transgender history. Christine is a highly respected author and a steadying hand for her community both young and older alike. A calming factual account of folk who've been a valued part of all of our lives for much, much longer than I've been around. Treat yourself and expand your outlook, why not be a pal and treat them too. Remove the fear, it's only fear we need actually fear.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles This was a fascinating read, the slow but steady ...

This was a fascinating read, the slow but steady acceleration of transgender people coming out and revealing themselves to a ever increasingly supportive country. This is the first time that trans history has been documented in this way - told through the eyes of those people who lived through this emancipation, for that is what happened. Transgender people have existed throughout history, but were bullied, shamed and ridiculed into hiding themselves away from society and then came the sixties and a fresher way of thinking - first homosexuality was partially decrimininalised in 1967 and a new freedom to be proud of who you were started to emerge.
This book is timely as many of the early "pioneers" are now reaching old age and their memories would have been lost forever - so it is a tribute to Christine Burns that she has put together these stories to remind future generations of transgender people where trans liberation in the UK began.
A must read.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles What do you know about Transgender people?
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 9 août 2018

They are rare in comparison with gay people, and so you may not know much at all. Be wary of listening to scaremongerers who for some ideological or political reason wish to diminish and degrade this diverse and usually rather wonderful group of people who have every right to be who they are, as they are, in our society. I am not trans, I have trans friends. They are the most intelligent. witty, delightful of people and bare no resemblance to the odd portrayals of them on much TV and media, and which scaremongering old-fashioned bigoted feminists and bigoted right-wingers like to offer up too. Try reading this book with an open mind and try a few other good ones like Trans Like Me, and you will get a better idea of this minority group.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles I like books you can dip in and out of
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 19 avril 2018

This book is an important and timely addition to the ongoing (and often misleading and misinformed) debates surrounding transgender and/or non-binary people in Britain.

The many contributions from a wide-ranging collection of academics and activists make it a lively read, and one which the reader can move through at their own pace, and in any order. I like books you can dip in and out of, and this is a real pleasure.

It’s an informative, sometimes funny, sometimes moving, honest account of a community who continue to fight for their rights and representation. I enjoyed reading it very much, and have already passed my copy on to friends, and requested a copy be bought for my university library.

A brilliant read!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Much better than I was expecting

I have found this very useful, you can read it from cover to cover, as I did, or dip in and out of different sections. A very informative book about trans history, much of which I did not know about. As one would expect from a publication from Christine Burns it is meticulously and thoroughly detailed and referenced, and it includes a multiplicity of different voices from people who have been involved in the struggle for trans rights up to now. Puts a lot of the struggles trans people are still having to engage in, into context. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
