5,0 sur 5 étoiles Very thorough!

Sometimes, their sentences are ridiculously long and confusing - but that's the editors mistake. This book is very thorough and thoughtfully crafted and perfect for a teenager that you want to learn about actual sex stuff. The author is non-binary and the book was clearly written with LGBTQ kids in mind, although it by no means should make the cis/hetero kids feel weird - again, very thoughtfully written. I started reading it to make sure I know what info I'm handing to my kids, and I was blown away by how much information is crammed in. If you're like me, an adult who is mad about the lack of education we received in our day (freaking purity culture nonesense), and you just want better for your kids, buy a copy of this book and start flipping through it. In the very least, it will help you talk to your kids better.

This book is a great resource to explain more of the ins and outs of sex and sexuality - it appeals to teens on their level and answers questions you may not have considered or may not be fully comfortable discussing with your children.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles I wish this was the type of sex ed I had growing up!

This is what sex ed should include! I am so relieved to have found this book and the website of scarleteen. All the information kids need to have healthy sex relationships and to understand ALL pertinent issues. All the things I had to learn the hard way through decades of experience because school sex ed is so useless. I highly recommend this for every single person adults and teens alike. Maybe age 12 and up?

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A Must-have book for young people and those who love them.
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 18 avril 2018

This is the book I wish I'd had when I was a teenager - for what it teaches about sex, sure, but also for what it teaches about relationships. There's invaluable information in here that most children and young people don't learn from family, and definitely not from TV, and shamefully not from sex ed classes.

I wish every young person had the choice to own and read this book.

To those who say it's too long, or too dense, for young people: Let the youth in your life choose that for themselves, please! If they read only a fraction of this book, they'll be more informed than they were before, and probably curious to learn more.

There are messages about consent, self-care, and being safe (in all senses), in every section.
Take this from Chapter 4, covering self-pleasuring, sexual arousal, and so much more of the stuff I know my younger self was looking for in sex ed books:
"Your sexuality is yours, it is totally about you, and it mostly comes from you, not from anything or anyone outside you. Feeling like it isn’t yours, isn’t mostly about you, and can only come from or be about someone else can do everything from really limiting your sexual life and your enjoyment of it to making you more vulnerable to predatory people or plain old jerks."

I think it's this expression of utter kindness that makes this book stand out. I'm not the intended audience, yet I feel nurtured and cared for reading this book. It feels like, in addition to learning how to say "no!" or "yes!" to sex, in addition to learning the nitty-gritty about birth control and safer sex tools, readers of this book are meant to walk away with the feeling that they matter.

There's so much in this book - so much knowledge, so many facts, so many tools young people can use to give themselves more control over their own bodies. Every chapter, whether it's talking about sexual abuse and assault, or body image, or how to explore one's own personal ethics, is rooted in giving power and agency back to young people. I salute that with everything I've got.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Thorough, inclusive, educational book
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 19 août 2018

I am using this as part of my homeschool curriculum for my HS senior son. I wanted a book that was inclusive of all expressions of sexuality and gender and this is it. I also wanted a book that addressed more than just the function of sex and STIs, but the emotional and mental aspects as well, and this book is it. The author shies away from nothing and helps give readers vocabulary and a healthy framework for things they might be experiencing, considering, or facing. I appreciate the details like the author's note urging cisgender readers not to skip the LGBT section, and the not-medical-book-sterile drawings and illustrations. This book is incredibly normalizing. It is honestly a treasure in our culture's generally prudish approach to sex education.
I am so grateful that my son is getting an actual education on sexuality from this book. He has had a positive response to this book, even though talking about sex with your parent can be icky. I believe that is due to the no-nonsense approach by the author.
As for who this book is best suited for, I wouldn't personally give it to a tween, only because it is so thorough it might scare them a bit. It's definitely great for the older teen crowd, though ideally before their first sexual experience (though that's not always realistic, they're sneaky). However, it's still VERY USEFUL for any person who is already sexually active. No maximum age limit.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I'm a health education teacher, and this is the book I chose for my own teen

Talking to teens about sexuality can be really challenging. Our children are counting on us for information and guidance, but human bodies - and human relationships - are complex. It's hard to knowing when to bring things up, how much to share, and what exactly to talk about. That's why I'm so grateful for this amazing book by Heather Corinna. In addition to giving clear, complete information about puberty and sexual anatomy, Corinna addresses the psychological and emotional concerns of young people with warmth and care. Variations in sexual anatomy, sexual desire, sexual orientation are gender are covered comprehensively, with repeated reminders that there's no one right way to be "normal." Corinna isn't afraid to address challenging topics like sexual assault and pornography, and makes a point to repeatedly emphasize the importance of consent and pleasure in healthy relationships.

Although this book is written for teens and young adults, I often share it with parents and caregivers who are trying to figure out how to talk about these subjects. S-E-X is over 400 pages long, so you may not read the whole thing, but It's well organized and indexed, so it can serve as a reference as new concerns arise.

I can't think of a better resource for learning about sexuality, and I encourage you to check it out!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles This is THE book I've been looking for.

I'm a progressive, sex positive parent, who realizes talking my [freshman in HS] kid's face off about sex isn't necessarily going to be what always resonates..... So much of this book reiterates what I've said (always helps to hear it from NOT your parent) and really lends an easy opportunity to some things we haven't really broached, e.g. how to help a friend who is being creeped on, self-harm, the reality of being a young parent. My kid pretty much hasn't put the book down since she got it, and has been highlighting parts, taking notes, asking questions. I'm so grateful for this book and can imagine my sex life being much more healthy as a teen/20 something if I had this as a foundational resource.

Just buy it for yourself if you're not sure if your kid is old enough for it. They either are or will be before you know it.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles In a sea of books geared towards cis gender and heterosexual people. This book is the shining gem

THIS BOOK IS GREAT. It is trans and queer inclusive which, as someone who’s been trying to help gather resources for that community on my college campus was a godsend. Especially with a website that we can possibly link our students too. Honestly the best and most encompassing sex-ed resource I have come across.
I love that it says things like “if you have a uterus” and goes into social constructs and gives great tips for how to think about what you are comfortable with in your sex life and how to talk to partners about that. I want to turn so much of this around to give to students and use in our wellness center. Also I learned a lot and I’d consider myself pretty sex educated. It honestly is the sex bible. My partner and I have started calling to it and looking at it together when we need to talk through something in our sex lives.

In a sea of books only geared towards cis gender and heterosexual people. This book is the shining gem that I and the queer community on my campus needs.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Awesome

This book is awesome. On top of the fact that it has literally e v e r y t h i n g you'd ever need/want to know about sex, it also has a fantastic resource section. A lot of young people don't trust the internet for sex info, and for good reason--it's easier to find porn or Cosmo articles or someone talking about what works for THEM, rather than what is healthy and good for EVERYONE. This book does a good job at reaching a vast array of people, and while it's a long book, it's not meant to be read cover to cover--rather, it's meant to be kept alongside you as you have questions. And if you disagree with some of what they say in the book, why not read it with your kid and have an honest conversation about it? This book is wonderful, and I wish someone had given it to me when I was a kid with lots of questions.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A Book for every teens' book shelf
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 4 avril 2017

My 15 year old daughter got a copy after taking the Unitarian Universalist Association "Our Whole Lives" sexuality education course from the main facilitator who is becoming a minister and who previously worked for Planned Parenthood. I got myself an electronic copy - it is a good, solid comprehensive book that ought to be on every teenager's book shelf. It covers everything you can imagine, and some things you may not have heard of. Yes, this book is Dad approved! Teens need to know all they can. This book talks not only about sex from a physical point of view, but also talks comprehensively about relationships. As a man in a happy marriage of nearly 17 years, I find this book can teach me a thing or two. Now if I could make a seal of my approval, I would, but since I am confined to text, I will attempt to create a text version of a seal of approval:
