3,0 sur 5 étoiles Can You Relate to Chhun??

In the short story, "The Accidental Terrorist," the narrative begins in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Amusing enough the author, Adam Piore, describes the occupants of this city to be largely `Vietnamese' without previously establishing where the boundaries lie. It was not until the end of chapter one that the audience realizes that Phnom Penh is a part of Cambodia.

Furthermore, it was not until chapter two that Piore formally introduces the main character, Yasith Chhun. In Literary Journalism, this style of narrative is done to draw in the reader (lecture). Usually it would make the reader curious about the remainder of the story. Chhun is introduced as a middle aged Cambodian-American who lives in Long Beach. Towards the beginning, I felt his character to be someone relatable to due to location and ethnic background. However as the story progress, I find myself less and less sympathetic to his cause.

My primary complaint is that the revolution has taken place over decades and Chhun could have felt these sentiments and acted towards them sooner. As a Vietnamese-American, born in America, I know that I feel constant feelings of hatred towards the communist government oppressing my people. I have know this for as long as I remember and I know the same anger survives with my parents, who were forced to leave their homeland. Every year on April 30th since 1975, our people have mourned for the loss of our country. I do not understand how this man, Yasith Chhun, suddenly decided to act on impulse and stupidity.

I do not think killing one person would help a corrupted government. Simply because another corrupted man in that government will fill his place. I believe in spreading awareness and planned rational action. It is important in Literary Journalism to have a relatable character, and my critique for this story is that I simply cannot relate or feel sympathetic towards Chhun (lecture).

Adam Piore's, "The Accidental Terrorist" tells the story of Yasith Chhun, a 42 year old accountant living in California, who escaped from his native Cambodia to come to America to start living the "American dream." After an upward climb to success, finishing his schooling while working multiple jobs, Chhun decides to plan a coup d'etat against Hun Sen's oppressive rule in Cambodia. Piore describes Chhun's excitement and passion for his homeland of Cambodia, keeping the reader right alongside the action with descriptive details of the planning of the attacks on the government. However, the story seems to lose its footing in a sea of overbearing factual evidence, which overshadowed the emotional aspect of Chhun's character. The reader is unable to truly resonate with Chhun's narcissistic view of himself as the next Moses or his passion for revolution in Cambodia. Piore tells the story in third person perspective, remaining unbiased in his descriptions of Chhun's actions, Hun Sen's government, as well as the decisions made by the American Government's involvement in Cambodia before and after 9/11. Overall the story is a dramatic and vivid look into the obsession for revenge and revolution which culminated in the loss of numerous Cambodians lives and the downfall of a disillusioned man.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles A Decent Story

A very interesting story and more fascinating is the fact that it is non-fiction! One cannot help feel sorry for Chhun whose motives seem to be more misunderstood than anything else. The events that occurred in his life led to this absolute chaotic future. I think that watching his father's near decapitation was the most grueling of all the events that were described and probably the one that led Chhun off the rocker. The grudge he held for the Vietnamese government during the Vietnamese War, followed him even after the war was over and he had left Vietnam. I believe that this led hims to absolute mania. His ultimate goal became to seek justice through vengeance. His ideas of being a Moses like figure for his people were created by his imagination. He seems to see himself very prophet and even compares his story to the story of Christ. I think that Chhun's rapidly growing delusions of "saving" his country were the ultimate cause of his fall.

Although it is sad to see the progression of what happened to Chhun and how he justificated his actions, one also has to consider that the man has clearly been through trauma and is thus seeking revenge and justice, even through violence and illogical acts. The story is composed quite nicely and the events are interesting. I, however, found the story to drag and constantly had to go back to re-read bits and pieces as I found myself trailing off.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Not Fully Intrigued by this Terrorist

When juxtaposing my reading of The Accidental Terrorist with The Instigators by David Wolman, I was less satisfied with the former. Initially, when reading The Accidental Terrorist, I nearly believed that I was tired and thus having a difficult time focusing on the piece. Ultimately, I realized that my lack of focus was more significantly due to a general indifference to the story. Though I did feel that there was some interesting material in Piore's story, what I felt was the writer's own disconnect with his subject overall hindered my interest in the piece. In the several instances in which Piore described his subject as someone with a certain "calling" to liberate the Cambodian people, a calling often compared to that experienced by Moses, I felt as if he was either mocking his subject, or he was just critical of his subject's motives. While it is unrealistic to expect every writer's subject to be captivating and likable, I could not help but feel as if Piore could have painted his subject in a better light. Perhaps this was due to the limitations of his reporting, and also could have been a result of the writer having a confusing subject or one that was simply difficult to relate to. Ultimately, I admit that I generally enjoy journalistic narratives in which, as a reader, I can sense the writer's understanding of his or her subject (whether or not that subject is necessarily likable), and I did not feel as though Piore possessed or was simply able to achieve a full connection with his subject.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles The Accidental Terrorist - Good but not enough character
Commenté aux États-Unis le 8 mai 2012

I will start by saying that this piece was an interesting read - the subject matter itself is something worthy of exploration. "The Accidental Terrorist" details the story of a Cambodian-American accountant who tried to start a revolution and overthrow the Cambodian government. Though the subject matter was intriguing and the piece was relatively well written, I did feel that something very important was missing from this story.
As a reader, I had a really hard time investing myself in and understanding Yasith Chhun, the main character. There seemed to be a large amount of narrative distance in regards to Chhun, such to the point that his actions and motivations seemed poorly justified. While there was some mention of his past and how it motivated his actions, this information is given to us in such a way that we're not really able to form a specific emotional connection with the character. The lack of interiority and character specificity distances us from Chhun, and, as a result, we have no way of understanding his motivations on an emotional level, and thus the piece wasn't as powerful as it could've been. There was definitely the potential for a profound and riveting piece here, but I think it would've required a lot more detail in regards to Chhun and his thought processes.

Adam Piore's piece titled The Instigators tells the story about an accountant turned extreme revolutionist for the country of Cambodia. In the early 1980s, Chhun Yasith left Cambodia after the death of his father and ended up in Long Beach, California a while later. Eventually, he became the President of the revolutionary group he created himself, the Cambodian Freedom Fighters. On November 24, 2000, Chhun and his rebels failed to inspire this revolution as they attacked the government buildings in Phnom Penh. They killed and injured several people.
As a reader, I did not feel a strong personal connection to the protagonist of the story. It was written from an impersonal perspective, much like a biography in which the author had no attachment to the subject. I feel like he is a character the audience is suppose to like since he suffered great tragedy at a young age, he is acting on behalf of American values and he lives in Long Beach, a place close to home for all of us in Southern California. But after everything he had been through and now with this failed revolution, I do not support him so much as a sympathize for him. Most of this has to do with the fact that he took such destructive action to promote this American value of freedom. This irony over him being a terrorist, but for our country is something I found intriguing. The story was interesting, but it did not completely captivate my attention.

Adam Piore's story of an accountant in California transformed into a revolutionary is interesting and riveting near the end. However, I believe that some of the transitions for the story were a bit rough and that Piore could have elaborated more on how Chhun arrived at the White House and got to dine with George W. Bush. The accountant also seemed a bit obtuse, because of his lack of understanding of how the government could prosecute him for what he says not only to the public through media, but also just by telling them what he has done. Chhun, I believe, was a big mouth and only wanted to start this revolution perhaps to show off and be a big hero like the ones in the movies that he watched, like in Braveheart. However, I do believe that he did command the so-called army, gave them weapons, ammunition, and supported them financially, but I didn't see anywhere that Chhun actually trained these men, except with these movies and giving them battle formations (oh, and code names). My problem isn't more with how the story is written but more along the lines of how Chhun rose to power from being an accountant to this revolutionary with no idea what he's doing. I guess, I need to read more about it.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles In Depth

This was a very in depth piece on a man who just wanted to do the right thing but just took the wrong approach at it. This Cambodian refugee that came to the U.S. and made something of himself, was still seeing the carnage and mayhem that the people of his homeland were suffering. He did something about it, or rather tried to but failed. A majority of this piece pulls you in and never lets go. You just want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen to this man and his plans for revolution. The author did a good job of slowly revealing things of the story chapter per chapter. I personally could not wait to find out what was going to happen. Was his plan actually going to work or was it going to be a disaster? However the last couple chapters of the book were slow and not as entertaining as the rest of the piece. I found myself reading and reading but not necessarily caring about what I was reading. I must have to do with the fact that I saw what happened to the main character's revolutionary plans. All in all this article was good, so I give it a 3.5 stars.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Revolution or Rebellion?
Commenté aux États-Unis le 6 mai 2012

This is an extremely interesting story. The story takes a look as what differentiates revolution versus rebellion; there is a fine line between fighting for justice and becoming unjust in the process. The story strays away from the traditional form of journalism, taking techniques and style from fiction to create a dramatic story rather than just a news article. It illustrates the issues Cambodian's felt and the heavy restrictions on personal freedom. It's interesting to see the main character start as a man trying to fight for his personal rights and end as a criminal. The story shows us how far people would go to fight back at the government. There are many stories of glorified and just revolutions, but this one does the opposite, showing a darker side to this idea. This is why the story becomes so interesting. The tale isn't told in the perspective of the police or the government, but it the perspective of the rebel, which usually sets the reader up to agree with the main character. But when we discover his actions are not what we expect, the story turns into something darker. It is a fascinating read and shifts the usual perspective of rebellion stories.
