As my title says - you really must get this book if you have anything whatsoever to do with content. It really is the missing link in putting together solutions for websites.
If you work in the UX / IA or BA sector of web development, then you'll probably come across the requirement to develop a website using a content management system, or finding a solution for a client who has a lot of content or communication needs. In the past you'd probably create a spreadsheet and deliver the website ticking the boxes. In the past - this solution might have worked. However, more and more clients are taking the CMS and then rather rapidly ending up in exactly the same position they were in before they got their new website - i.e. a lot of content that nobody uses or can find.
The other issue that's facing our industry now is that there are multiple digital channels into which messaging or content needs to be delivered. How do you bring all of these channels together strategically to meet the needs of both the user and the business? Well - whilst this book won't do it for you, it gives you a really great set of tools to help you deliver what you need. It reduces the risk that the wrong message goes out on a specific channel, it also reduces the risk that the nice new website ends up with the wrong content in the wrong place.
The book is a pleasure to read, it's simple to understand and you'll probably find yourself going 'ah! that makes perfect sense, why haven't I thought of that before!' The techniques it suggests won't add lengthy delays to a project, nor will it mean it'll cost a lot more, it just brings things together in such a way that you'll end up saving money in the short, medium and long term.
I'm particular when looking for books about marketing. I've been in the advertising & marketing industry for over 15 years so it's important they provide value and teach me things I don't know. I look for books that are well-written, provide a good perspective on the subject, give information you can actually use and answer the "WHY". This book hits the mark on all accounts. I've read hundreds of blog posts, books, whitepapers, etc. on the subject of Content Marketing and would recommend this book over most of the information out there. It's easy to read, witty, and really tells you how it all works. If you're interested in Content Marketing or are learning to use it for your business (or provide it as a service), this book is an absolute must!

I studied Content Strategy and Halvorson & Rach's book was the firs touchpoint for me. Having a Marketing and Communications background it was getting new insights I wished for for so long.
The book includes content about: Content Analysis Content Audit Change Management Building a Content Strategy Content Strategy Quad
It is the second edition and waht is in the book is very appropriate and current but bear in mind that Kristina Halvorson revised the content Strategy Quad 2018. You will find the new one on Halvorson's Braintraffic blog.
Reading this book is fun and very informative. I really like her examples.
If you're interested in it have been tasked with content management as part of your job this book is invaluable. Easily digested lists and examples give you a great beginning road map of how content can be managed to make everyone's jobs easier. The tone of the book is both humorous and educational which made what could be a very dry topic a very easy read. If you're a user experience professional like I am some of this will be overlapping since the roles overlap in responsibility to a small degree but that was really minimal. I have highlighted many passages and will be coming back to this book as I dig more into projects where content management is needed
I've had a copy of the 1st edition since it came out and was curious about what would be new in the 2nd edition.
This is filled with excellent additional material, including expanded information about messaging, content structure, governance planning, user lifecycle and more. The voice of the writers is very down-to-earth and accessible, and entertaining, too.
I manage a new team of content strategists and made this required reading for them. They've found it extremely helpful as they've come to understand more and more how content strategy works in general--and the challenges we face implementing content strategy in a non-profit organization.
Online content strategy as a vocation is still in its infancy. There aren't many university courses on the subject. So where do you begin learning the art, craft and science of CS? I recommend starting with this comprehensive introduction from CS guru Kristina Halverson. It's a fun read (without being trivial) and I'm a big fan of Halverson's 'content strategy quad', which creates a really useful perspective for all types and sizes of content projects.
A seminal tome on the emerging discipline of Content Strategy. If you work with content on any level, you need this book. Kristina Halvorson and Melissa Rach deliver a ton of useful information and guidance in a consumable form and friendly tone of voice. Warning: May cause considerable excitement about your work. Side effects include: The desire to explore Content Strategy further (truly a rabbit hole), and the generation of a ton of new ideas.
