Short of a Century

Just about okay; nothing great

Given the reputation of N N Taleb, I was willing to shell out money for a book of aphorisms.

Some of the aphorisms rang true. Some were profound and some were not. Some were downright dumb. But the value of aphorisms is to be gathered from what one makes of them. Apart from the Greek myth of the Procrustean bed (what attracted me to the book in first place) dealt with in the two pages of the preface, only a few aphorisms gave me pause and made me think. Most of them seemed run-of-mill repetitions.

For a $ 4 million advance to Taleb on the book and the love other readers have for this particular work, perhaps this book is targeted towards those who have read his earlier work and are cued in to certain phenomenon.

I gave it 3 stars instead of 2.5, because while I did not find many Taleb's aphorisms pertinent or up-to-the-mark does not mean that they wrong or right. So I would like to rate it so-so (and not bad), leaving other readers to make up their own minds.

The Book:
The book has a decent quality cover paper with matte finish. The illuminated letters effect on the front actually comes across as blurred and pirated. It seems intentional on part of Penguin though I don't know why.

The inside pages are cream-hued with legible printing and a decent font size. The book bought for INR 236 at amazon.in (MRP 399) has inner pages that positively resemble a mass paperback of low to medium paper quality.

This collection of aphorisms can best be described as, bullet points from Taleb`s other books. His ideas have been boiled down, into a list of maxims. The author identifies many critical errors, in other people`s thought process. This of course, makes for very interesting reading.

What brings down the rating, is Taleb`s bitter denunciations. There are certain groups of people, that Taleb does not like. And he makes no bones about telling you his opinions. In one reference, he compares academics to the profession of prostitution. Well you have been warned. Taleb has very sharp and sometimes poisonous evaluations.

This book has many provocative insights. However, the reader has to be prepared, to brush off many of the harsh pointed criticisms.

Some great aphorisms and some that seem not to be well selected by the author. I read other evaluations and some people complain that is not a book. It is a book, but too short. But some of the aphorisms added a lot to my myself after I read them and I pondered for some days.

Thought provoking, witty, and often acidic. A bit self-indulgent for my taste. A few bottles from La tour in the mix without a doubt. But if you enjoy Taleb's philosophical rants, you will probably enjoy.

Me gusta Nassim Taleb, pero este libro es caro para tan poca chicha...casi todas las citas ya están por internet y cuando me lo compré vi que las que están en internet son las mejores. Yo no lo compraría de nuevo, pero tengo que decir que "está bien" 3 estrellas.

It's not a bad book, it has witty quotes and thoughts expressed within, but I much prefer the books which unfold as interestingly and chaotic as randomness.

I found reading Nassim Taleb's other two well known books "Black Swan" and "Fooled By Randomness" more insightful and entertaining than "The Bed of Procrustes". This book is basically a boiled down version of the other two books, but with less substance and more of a look into what he thinks. The size of the book (physically) and actual amount of text is someone disappointing, but what can one expect with a book of aphorisms.

This book is more a curiousity for those who have read or seen his books and media appearances.

これはaphorism集です。といってもcioranの The Trouble With Being Born ほど難解ではありません。そこに姿を覗かせるのは、西欧の合理主義者でもなければ、日本の善でもない、私たちにはなじみの薄いlevantine流の価値観です。この価値観はどう説明したらいいのでしょう。読んでいただくしかありません。でもおそらく原文で読まない限り、この価値観とその提示の仕方の持つ魅力は伝わらないでしょう。著者自身が、aphorismの説明を求める行為は、馬鹿の証明だといっているくらいですから。
あとがきともいうべきpostfaceまでは、すべてが短いaphorismです。わかりやすいものからそしてどうにも理解不能なものまでが含まれています。aphorismの常として、それは簡潔で、見事な韻や比喩のパレードです。しかし多様な解釈が可能であり、そこに含まれるユーモアと諧謔と明快さは、西欧の啓蒙主義者とは異なりますし、ドライでクールな情熱を秘めたものです。
著者の価値観は、マーケティングとname dropping、そしてto-be-seenへのobsessionに代表されるアメリカのスタイルとは対極の物といっていいでしょう。選択の多様化と情報の増加は、決して真理への接近ではなく、より多くの危険な幻想と愚者を生み出すだけというわけです。真理はもっと単純なものであり、自由の拡大の先には混乱のみがあり、著者の求める「自由」は、むしろ情報を遮断した先にある透徹したもののようです。
著者がもっとも軽蔑するのは、ある種の愚者です。それは、コンサルタント、経済学者、そしてジャーナリストによって代表されます。彼らは、ある一定の鋳型に、複雑な現実を押し込めよう（還元のために誤った還元を求める）とします。著者は、これらの人物と接触した後は、お清めの入浴をするといっているくらいです。
