Disappointing

I will start by saying that I have REALLY enjoyed Joe Hills other books (NOS4R2 especially, was brilliant). However this is the 1st short story collection of his that i have read, and i found it hugely disappointing. Nearly every story felt unfinished, barring 20th century ghost and voluntary commital. Very few of these stories either contain ghosts or are in any way creepy or scary, Dead-wood, Abrahams Boys and the locust one, are particularly bad, the others I can barely remember despite reading the book during a single day. I am truely sorry that this is a review i had to write but i hope that joe hill decides to return to writing full length books and stops trying to ruin his fan base by publishing his half baked first ideas and expecting people to spend their good money on buying them. Disappointed in you Joe!

These stories were okay. I didn't finish the book which is saying something because I love to read. This is Stephen King's son so I hold him to a higher standard. Maybe there are better stories. Might go back to it after I finish this Alfred Hitchcock Mag.

Dont Give Up On Joe Hill Based Solely On This Book

I have to say...had I read this book, before I read any of his other books....I probobly would have given up on him at this one! LUCKILY, I have read all his other books, and this was the last on my list.....
The stories didnt make sense alot of the time, and they were dull and boring.....I can normally read 1-2 books a week...however, it took me almost 2 weeks to finish this one! The only reason why I didnt give up on it, was because I paid for it !

If you read this book, and was unhappy....please dont let this one book judge Joe Hill has an author....He is actually quite the remarkable author, and I would suggest his book "Heart Shaped Box"...followed by "NOS 4A2"....and lastly, "Horns"......

Also, please dont compare him to his author father Stephen King....Joe Hill has a completly different writing style as him.....I will be the first to admit that I was expecting his dad to come out in his writing....however, it never did :)

I can only recall one actual ghost story, and it was boring. It's hard to rate this because obviously these are a bunch of short stories not just one. The quality of the stories range from 1 to 3 stars, so I have to pick the middle of the road. Some of this is nonsense like random thoughts written down without meaning. How can I tell a short story from an incomplete work? Maybe, when there are too many unanswered questions at the end. A few of the stories you'll want more, but not many of them. I think this is stuff Hill jotted down when he was a kid growing up over the years. Not worth the price. I'll have to start going to the library for stuff like this.

The title is very misleading. I was looking forward to a book of ghost stories. Except for "20th Century Ghosts" the rest of them seemed to be out of "The Twilight Zone".

This was my first exposure to Joe Hill's fiction, and while 20th Century Ghosts didn't completely turn me off to the idea of reading Hill's novels (Heart Shaped Box, Horns), it has left me feeling far less enthusiastic about the endeavor. He has imagination and skill, but for every story that showed some originality there were two others that were utterly devoid of originality.

Many of the tales dragged on longer than necessary (a tendency which Hill's dad, Stephen King, also seems increasingly prone to), and in most cases just when the action starts building toward a climax, the stories simply end, as if Hill got bored with them and wanted to start writing something else.

The stories and my thoughts concerning them are as follows:

BEST NEW HORROR
Good character development, but the story ended so abruptly at the height of the action that I wondered if the CD was defective and had skipped over the climax. The story-within-the-story (Button Boy) was disturbing, and its ending far more satisfying.

20th CENTURY GHOSTS
One of the (very) few actual *ghost* stories in this collection. Well-written, but not terribly memorable.

POP ART
The premise is pretty original, but the story drags on a bit too long.

YOU WILL HEAR THE LOCUST SING
The kind of story writers call an "homage," which typically translates into "blatant rip-off." In this case, the source material is Kafka and classic giant bug movies. The story just seems to meander around until Hill gets tired of writing, at which point it ends. Over-long, dull, and unoriginal.

ABRAHAM'S BOYS
Very well written, but ends too abruptly. A shame, too, b/c this story had potential.

BETTER THAN HOME

THE BLACK PHONE
Could have been much better. Ended too abruptly with scarcely a climax. The ending kind of mirrors that of ABRAHAM'S BOYS.

IN THE RUNDOWN

THE CAPE
Longer than necessary, but otherwise entertaining.

LAST BREATH
Probably my favorite of the stories in this collection, not to mention one of the shorter of the stories. Reminded me a bit of Bradbury's darker work in The October Country (back when Bradbury knew how to write).

DEADWOOD
Interesting, though it isn't a story at all. More like a brief aside.

THE WIDOW'S BREAKFAST

BOBBY CONROY COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD
Well-written character piece, but don't be fooled by the name. This is NOT even remotely a horror story.

MY FATHER'S MASK
A surreal, meandering plot. Entertaining enough, although like King's short story 1408 (from Everything's Eventual), this story seems to just throw a lot of random weirdness at the reader in hopes that something will eventually strike a nerve.

VOLUNTARY COMMITTAL
Reminiscent of daddy Stephen's short story N from Just After Sunset (as well as numerous other stories). However, unlike YOU WILL HEAR THE LOCUST SING, this story has a bit more originality. Decent story. Well written.

SCHEHERAZADE'S TYPEWRITER
Another *ghost* tale, albeit one that never really goes anywhere.
