2,0 sur 5 étoiles Too Long, Little Plot Development
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 19 décembre 2021

Final Review - I've finished this dastardly disappointing disaster and it shows that it was written in haste over a six week period that the authors describe. This duo is in desperate need of a professional editor post haste. I will leave it at a two because while it suffers hugely, there is a story and world here that was created albeit it suffers due to the authors' ineptitude to polish the plot in favor of supporting characters seeing their time in the sun this go around.

To be frank, this was one of the worst written books I have read in a while. While they should be working to tie up loose ends and give everyone their just desserts, they do not accomplish this. Unlike skilled writers of multiple POVs who use their POVs as a vehicle to move the plot, Caroline and Susanne can't seem to get themselves out of the raunch and comedy to utilize their POVs as plot movers.

Darcy's foreshadowing for her curse was poorly done because the authors were more focused on giving the readers laughs or sex scenes. Being "tired" or "exhausted" is not effective foreshadowing to the beast that she becomes. If they had her wake up in odd locations or feel Lavinia's calls, then maybe, it would have been more apparent that the curse was working in a different way than the characters believed.

They do time jumps without any discretion or description. First we start right after the Christmas battle, then we are thrown into March, miraculously, it becomes the twin's birthday and then autumn? Way to mess with our heads without writing it to reflect as such. It does not take more than a few paragraphs to describe the time gone by by the POV you are writing from the set the current scene.

Next - because they are writing so many POVs the story development hurts immensely. These authors love their creation, and it is apparent but with that love comes an unwillingness to let certain scenes or POVs go when they are editing. There is time devoted to characters that have no effect on the plot. They are in the endgame of this series and because they gave time to the supporting characters (that never should have had a POV to begin with) the plotline of the story of the twins faltered. This book should have been tight with development (character and plot) but alas, we are stuck with more raunchy scenes and forced upon comedy then needed that takes away from important story telling.

There is also little to no development in our two main baddies (why there are two? Please enlighten me). We learn little of Lavinia other than she is creepy, ok whatever. And Lionel does all he does because he was bullied? Really, that is all you can come up with for him? They do not go into Lavinia's background, why she is owed an Acrux, and her planning (how it would have been nice to see some of that). Lionel is made to look like a fool when we get POVs of him which is not how he is written from the non-POV side. Yes, you can have a villain who has fears and embarrassments but Lionel was hyped over six books for being sadistic, masochistic and down right awful but none of that was seen. It was as if the authors took joy in making him a a farce.

Finally, giving us another prophecy as a cliffhanger is a cop out. There was already one prophecy that was being deciphered (and now that I think about, was completely forgotten about in this book and rarely touched upon).

If they had taken out all of the fluff and merged the important plot points of Book 8 into this, they could have ended the series in Book 7. But now, the readers will have to wait a year to see the culmination of this series which I do not feel confident will end in any particularly amazing fashion after this snore-fest of a seventh book.

As I stated earlier, this should never be compared to the beloved Harry Potter that is a beautiful classic in itself.

*******
1st review - Right now, I am about 40% into this book and it is an absolute snore fest. These authors are in desperate need of a professional editor that can guide them. Right now this feels like they have a lot of scenes that they wrote that they couldn't part with so it made the cut which is making it difficult to get through because they do not have any bearing on the plot. The chapters are too long and filled with fluff that isn't progressing the narrative. There has been little plot development or character development to this point and that is disappointing since this book was so hyped. I've always believed that, as these books were written, adding more points of view was a mistake because now they have more plotlines and characters that need resolution which is distracting from the overall storyline and it is obviously hurting this book as they attempt to give all of these characters attention. It feels like a second rate soap opera at this point. As I read along, I may change my review but right now as I am in the thick of moments that should have been edited out or down, I can't see myself giving this more than a two star, I am just disappointed and discouraged to read further.

Edit update 1-
Ending my night at 72% and I am just frustrated. Keeping it at a two star still. There is just so much fluff. I'd say about 5 or so chapters are relevant to the storyline while the others have no substance to the plot. It is obvious that this was written in a rush over six weeks. There are holes in the story and still no reason for the Lionel's "orderist" opinion. In his chapters, it feels like the authors are making fun of him instead of writing a true villain. I need intention and malice but I am getting silly side stories or high school bullying. This is not enough motive to bring down a kingdom for me.

I am still on the train that there are too many points of view and it is detracting from a proper story. Instead of using these points of view as a vehicle to propel the story, they just give them fluff pieces (cough, Seth and Caleb cough) that do not aid in the overall story telling.

Will update once I finish but still, a sorely disappointed reader who really thinks JK Rowling should interfere with comparing this to our beloved Harry Potter, this doesn't even come close to it.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Read low ratings

I wish I had read the low ratings before beginning. They cover much of what I would say .
There were a few scenes that made me laugh out loud and a couple that brought a tear to my eye, but most of this series just infuriated me.
1) The authors’ favorite word is BUT. For example , this character is the strongest, baddest character in the entire world, BUT… This character really, truly, deeply hates another character , BUT… There is no possible solution, no way back from this decision, BUT…
2) The entire story could’ve been told in half the number of books . Instead at the end of book, we are still left on a cliffhanger with promises that boom nine is the end . Book nine is not the end and instead the authors chose to retell book one from the male characters’ perspective, which is entirely unnecessary since this series is written from multiple POVs. To make matters worse , after NINE books, instead of concluding the story and resolving the cliffhanger in book, there is yet ANOTHER prequel that appears to be Lance Orion’s story five years before the awakening .
3) Each conflict relies heavily on a random act of deus ex machina to resolve because the authors have repeatedly said the situation is hopeless , all main characters who are supposedly the strongest and best have been bested and are completely tapped out of all power… but suddenly out of nowhere everything changes. Even worse, just as the strongest baddest character is about to defeat the bad guy, she gets a case of the feels and spends ten minutes talking to herself while the bad guy gets away…..
4) Even the comedic relief takes a nose dive in later books . It becomes so absurd and reminiscent of The Three Stooges that you can just skin for a few chapters.
5) steamy scenes become so depraved they aren’t even hot anymore.
6) The enemies-to-lovers thing is so out there it’s not even plausible . The girls hate these guys (rightfully so) but are so weak of mind that they can’t stop getting turned on by them. It’s gross.
There are just so many things wrong with this series that I can’t even describe it all without getting all rage-y.
Ultimately I ended up skimming though the last few books to try to find out who lived and who died (honestly I was rooting for world destruction and death to all by this point) . Unfortunately the whole series , after NINE books plus prequels , there is still no resolution and I just don’t have it in me to wait for book 10, 11, 12 or whatever to find out. So I’m ending this series on my own: everyone died in a cosmic collision of star fire, Phoenix fire, and dragon fire which was so powerful it cracked the world in half. Nobody won… including the readers.

*Spoilers ahead* I have devoured these books as they’ve come out. And I truly mean that. Forgoing sleeping and eating like many of the other reviewers. When I finished book 6, I was really pleased with the trajectory of the story and where our characters were on their journey. When they announced that book 7 would no longer be the last book, I’ll admit I was thrilled by the idea of more time in Solaria! I’ve enjoyed my time there so much that I read the Dark Fae series while waiting for book 7 and I made plans to read the Darkmore series while waiting for book 8. I say all this so the devoted fans understand that I don’t make this next statement lightly: This book is the worst of the series.
When I say this, I’m not even referencing the last 10% of the book that rips our hearts out, spits on them, then grinds them into the ground for daring to care about these characters. I’m talking about the cash grab that this books feels like.
Once again, our characters are on a hunt for ancient relics that will change the fate of the kingdom. Don’t get confused though, these are separate from the ancient relic they spent all of book 6 looking for that was going to change the fate of the kingdom. You know, the relic that is barely mentioned in this book and seems like they will have to search for again after that ending?
Normally, I love a good treasure hunt. Who doesn’t like Indiana Jones? But this treasure hunt is barely begun after 989 pages. Not to mention, they keep adding in more things for them to find. Gotta find these 6 famous relics, oh but before that, find this shadow related thing, but can’t forget the thing that’s needed to use the shadow related thing! It’s tiresome and feels like they’re consistently telling us our Phoenix princesses are in another castle. How many side quests do we need?
Speaking of side quests, do you remember the pace of the first few books? How the entire book would only cover a few weeks? There’s a whole 4 month period of this book that gets skimmed over as if they’re playing an 80s training montage with Tory and Darcy. For those aware of how book 6 ended, that means they waste 4 months of Darius and Tory’s time together and it’s barely worth mentioning in the writing.
Overall, I take issue with the lack of forward progress for our characters and the plot. This book is the longest one yet and somehow barely anything happens until the last 10%. Instead, we get a lot of side quests that amount to practically nothing by the end and even seem to negate all the quests they did in book 6. Anyone remember how crucial that Zodiac Guild felt? Yeah, me neither after this book. Also, how many prophecies do we need?
I will absolutely still read book 8 because I’m too far invested by now, but I’m going in with a lot of skepticism.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Quality over Quantity

2.5 stars *

Let me preference by saying the Zodiac Academy series is by far my favorite series I have ever read. I recommend this series to anyone when asked what they should read. I'm invested in these books and adore the world the authors have created and the characters I love. That being said I can't help but feel like this book was rushed and majority of the book lacked any plot or character development for about 80% of the book.

The story consisted of: sex-same conversations between characters-sex-comedy-sex-same conversation-comedy-same conversation. I struggled to get through this one where the other books in the series I would devour the book within days. This one I had to push myself until the 80% mark where things actually picked up. And still that wasn't up to the author's usual standard of work. Although, as of lately, I've noticed quality of their books going down and I am not sure if it is because they are trying to get out so many books out in a year but their books are suffering. Same with the KOQ series. First two books were magic and the last two were rushed and sloppy. It kills me to think one of my favorite series will suffer the same fate.

We don't need everyone's POV. So many Geraldine and Lionel chapters. I skipped Geraldine's chapters because the literally did nothing for the plot and the longer I heard her talk, the less endearing I found her and more annoying she was. Which sucks because I love that character. Also, Lionel chapters just felt immature and in turn diminished the quality of his character. How the hell is that man in power? His chapters make it seem like it shouldn't be plausible. He's really not that powerful yet he is? Better off leaving his chapters out and leaving the mystery of him.

Repetitive chapters and comedy replace actual plot that could be happening. The authors announced they will take a different approach to deadlines this year. Please, let them pace themselves so the quality of their book don't suffer anymore.

Things I liked about the book: the authors are funny and I laughed out loud. I don't mind cliffhangers.

Obviously to have got to book 7/8 I have been invested in this story. The story/plot is actually gripping. But dang the writing has gotten worse. Feels like this book has just dragged on with endless chapters about how much they all love each other, instead of actually getting on with the story. I found myself skipping out on pages and not missing anything of importance.
It honestly feels like they just filled this book with nothing, purely so they could cash in on another book.
Those last few chapters were thrilling and crazy and brought all kinds of emotions but honestly should have been done half way through.
Please for the love of the stars, drop the waffle in the final book. We get it, they are all sooooooo in love and crazy about each other and only have eyes and hearts for their mate and all star bound bla bla bla. Over it.
Geraldine has become a joke, Seth & Caleb arc is great, but why has Seth; an Heir to the council started acting like a 14 year old!! He's an alpha wolf!! I get having a few moments of him being cute and puppyish but that's become his whole plot and it's so annoying!
Tory- again we get it. Your a hot bad ass. To still be here after 7 books of being told this, we get it! We don't need constant reminders. We know these characters now.
Just get on with the story. Please.

Reads like juvenile fanfiction with sex thrown it. Same issues again and again through each book, it's exhausting riding the rollercoaster of building up anticipation then climax of oooohhhh noooo Darius and Tory are fighting or ooooh noooo Darcy and Orion are being pulled apart by the stars...how original. Insert eye roll. Every book is the same basic predictable recipe with no shocking twists or turns. Tried the series because so many were raving about it on TikTok but truly struggling to find what everyone is so enraptured with. Cringe inducing fanfic level predictably boring series.

So, let me begin by saying, I read the first 6 books of the series in less than a month. I LOVED them. I loved the way they were written, how the characters began to develop and evolve, but still leaving the tension of who was going to end up on the throne just under the surface. I preordered the 7th book as soon as I finished so it would be delivered to my Kindle ASAP.

That being said, I was hugely disappointed. I had to double check and make sure the same authors had written this book. It felt rushed and the language completely changed. It became crass and more vulgar than it needed to be. I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but some of the verbiage sounded like I had stepped into a frat house. It made it very difficult to connect the characters in this book with the ones I had become invested with previously. It's one thing to have a characters attitude or outlook change, but to change the very way they speak makes it difficult for the reader.

This point aside, this book did feel like a lot of filler. There was so much potential and it seems like a wasted opportunity. I will be reading the next book because I have a compulsion to finish any series (no matter how horrible) that I start. I am just holding out hope that the authors take into account mine and so many other reviews. I hate to see a series finish weak or rushed and I hope they can get it back to the Zodiac characters we love for the final book.

Literalmente no pasa nada hasta el final. En algún sitio he leído que los autores cobran en KU por página escrita. Debe de ser por eso que el libro es taaaan largo para tan poca historia. Esperemos que el final esté mejor.

Seven books in and I’m calling it quits. We spend three quarters of this book being yanked around from melodramatic fluff to volatile scenes full of death and despair. The middle of this book is so achingly boring that I spent most of my time reading it wishing it were done already. The only reason I finished it was because I was already seven books invested. I spent half the book pining for a scene to finish up a plot point from the previous novel, and when that scene finally came, it was depressingly devoid of the drama I expected. Character development (at this point in the series) was heartbreakingly slow, and questionable for Lance’s big show of affection.

Moreover, The authors keep inventing more and more fantastical ways of making sure no one in the books are happy - and I do mean no one - culminating In the actual death of one of the main characters. Seriously? What do these authors have against people being happy?

When I read novels, I read them for the happily ever after. There is no happily ever after in these books. All of them end with a cliffhanger designed to ensnare readers to buy the next one, resulting in greater and greater shock values with each progressive book. There is absolutely no promise this series will ever have an HEA (or that the series will ever end), and I’m sick of thirsting for something that I don’t foresee ever happening. The authors have painted themselves into a corner and I have no intention of watching paint dry.

I have read everything by the sisters at this point and they have quickly become my favourite authors, which is why reading this hurt so much. It was nowhere near the standard that they usually put out and it seems that just because you can write a book in 6 weeks doesnt mean you should. Literally the first 40% was a complete snooze fest, nothing happens and i was just constantly putting the book down it was difficult to get into as there was so much down time with the characters considering the battle they had just finished and the war that is approaching. I was looking forward to seeing the twins further develop their skills and their leadership qualities by becoming more involved with the rebels but that didnt happen at all! The part where the twins had some lime light in developing their talents was majorly understated and rushed. Usually the authors are great at giving comic relief in between angst and action, however they were delivered without the latter and so just fell a bit short. I agree with other reviewers that there were just too many unnecessary POVs from Geraldine, Xavier plus Seth/Caleb. If they arent using these for plot development then keep it to a minimum. Especially Geraldine.....being in her head so much was exhausting.
