He didn't want a pen-pal, so it took time for Beckett 'Chaos' Gentry to read the first letter from Ella, his best friend's little sister. So, he surprised himself when he not only enjoyed receiving her letters but liked writing back too. As a result, he wants to meet this cheery single mom, so finally accepts his friends offer to go to his home in Telluride. Only, that trip never happens...until fate steps in to change that.

With enticing blurb, I didn't hesitate to buy this novel. However, by chapter twelve, I was already emotionally drained in a way I just wanted to see a little ray of sunshine through the heartbreaking, grey cloudy narrative.

'No, you gave me something to lose. Other married guys … Love for them was the monorail. You are the first person I've ever loved, and the first woman who has ever loved me. You're the roller coaster.'

Beckett likens Ella to a roller coater. For a reader, this novel mirrors his observation. The narrative includes some sunny, uplifting high points but equally darker, emotionally challenging ones will have you grabbing tissues to wipe away your tears.

The writing quality is top notch, with relatable protagonists and supporting characters. Yet I can't rate this higher than I have. The narrative overall is too much. There's an unnecessary, gut-wrenching twist near to the end. What happens before that point is angst-ridden enough. Adding to it is a step too far. It's a shame. The ending is satisfying in a way the loose ends are tied. That aspect I'm happy with and as a conclusion, the story has stayed with me.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles 3.5 Tragic Stars

This book had the potential to be one of the best books of 2019. However at 90% it lost that potential.

So we meet Chaos and Ella and instantly you feel something for each of them. Ella has had so many bad things happen to her throughout her life, and throughout the book the hits just come one after the next after the next. Beckett a.k.a Chaos had a crappy childhood and doesn't form connections. Well thanks to Ella's brother dying Beckett is sent to watch out for her and her family. Of course they form an undeniable connection and fall in love. With every over dramatic romance they break up for a while but find their way back to each other, but we don't really know how since the book skips ahead. Then when the author should have stopped the story and given us an epilogue that was Oscars worthy, she instead inserts the most heart wrenching, senseless tragedy into the story. That is where she lost me. I was all about 5 stars and couldn't put the book down until that moment. Why? Why? Why?

I know that there are many many many 5 star reviews and believe me they were earned up until 90%. I would still recommend this book to my friends with a warning so that they are prepared that not all HEA's are what they seem.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles I don’t know how I feel

I’m torn with this book. It was really well written and the storyline, in general was good. What bothered me was maybe the last 10% of the book. Why you ask? Two reasons: 1. Ella, our heroine becomes sanctimonious and and quite frankly, mean. She is so damaged by what has happened in her past that she was looking for any excuse to be proven right. I actually didn’t think what Beckett did was so bad when you look at the whole picture and his reasonings. The fact that she made him wait MONTHS before forgiving him was unconscionable if you ask me. His ACTIONS since the beginning him should have been enough. Her actions also affected her children, and it took her far too long to realize what that did to them. 2. I won’t spoil it here but what happens to this family literally ONE DAY after what should have been the best day of their lives was downright cruel. Yes, life is unfair but really? How much more was this poor woman supposed to endure in such a short timeframe? And why? Why was that necessary? What was the point? I don’t even know what to do with my feelings about this book. I loved and hated it at the same time so I honestly don’t know how to rate it.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Irritating heroine, unsatisfactory ending

I cannot empathise with the female MC and this book definitely does not have a satisfying ending. Ella is full of herself to the point of being selfishly naive. Nobody likes lies but a sensible person should be able to assess which lies are made in bad faith and which are forced to be made to save or protect something. You definitely don’t throw someone out just because he’s omitted to tell you something. Not after he’s done so much, including saving your daughter’s life. The male MC could use some backbones. He’s practically being bullied here by Ella’s self-“centredness”. And no momma who’s on the brink of a financial ruin financing her child’s medical treatment would tear up a cheque worth millions just to uphold her foolish principles of independence. That’s hard to swallow.

First half is 4 stars. It drops to 2 stars after chapter 22. Looks like the author got carried away with the need to have tragedy and drama till the end. While the writing is good, the story is ridiculous. So 3 stars.

This review y’all... one of the more difficult ones to write. I love this author so much and her story telling is always fun to get lost to.

This book started great and then the until about 40%ish it was a little slow for me, but total twist happened that made the reading amazing to keep reading.

Then it was so much fun to read. The story and the progression - amazing and perfect. Then 90% came and NO. That is why this book has 2.5-3 stars from me. I honestly don’t understand where that came from or why it had to happen. You didn’t know it was going to happen until it was stating you in the face.

So happy I didn’t read spoilers or reviews befor I went in. I am happy I still read it, but so confused and disappointed with the direction the book took.

I promised myself I wouldn’t make it spoiler-y at all, just some of my frustrated feelings.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Why would a good book get 3 stars

Ok here it is. This story was written so well and so real it took me months to read. I have never cried so much. I could only read it until I couldn’t get passed my tears. I don’t want to spoil anything but this was really sad 😢. The end was sweet but by this time I was just to sad to enjoy it. The books I read don’t always have to be sweetness and light but this book just kept me down. Sorry I don’t think I’ll be reading anymore of her books. Just to much sorrow for me.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles A little disappointing.

There were a lot of good reveiws and hype regarding The Last Letter, but I must say I was disappointed. The story line had great potential and I loved the letters that were written back and forth. The book became too 'Harlequin'. The sexual content was a litttle smutty and the descriptions of certain parts of anatomy were cheap (for lack of a better word and this most likely dates me). It was an ok story, but could have developed into an exceptional one.

I love Rebecca Yarros books, and really enjoyed the story of Beckett and Ella, and the gorgeous twins Maisie and Colt. She really does write so well and one starts to feel that the characters are real. This book was laced with tragedy almost from the beginning, and it was very emotional with plenty of angst. I do feel however that the twist at the end was not necessary and upset me terribly, which I guess says a lot about the quality of Rebecca Yarros’ writing, but I felt that I’d had enough angst and heartache for one book already, and it just pushed me over the edge. I prefer my reading for relaxation to ultimately uplift me rather than depress me, one of the reasons I always try to read HEAs.

Ugh, what miserable novel that is supposed to be part romance and part family drama. The romance part was corny with a lot of unnecessary drama. The love scenes made me cringe. The family drama involving young children was the real meat of the novel and absolutely gut wrenching. But worse, the novel then completely punches you in the gut in the end with the kids' plot. I was a mess of tears at the end not because I even cared about the couple but because of the kids. It doesn't seem right to use child tragedy as a plot device for romance. I'll never read this author again.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Beautifully written, overkill on the tragedies

Beautifully written book, I loved the letter so much. I enjoyed Ella greatly. It was nice to see a young 20 something character working so hard on her business and being a great single mom. I figured out what was going to happen before the midway point, the tragedies felt overkill, it went a bit too far in that aspect but it was still a great book and I’d recommend it to any fan of military related romance.
