3,0 sur 5 étoiles So much excellent potential unfulfilled, in favor of excessive smut
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 8 février 2023

This had the potential to become the best book of the series, and yet...

On unfulfilled potential:

Main character has the means to publish and expose information and control the narrative and she does not-a-thing about it, completely ignoring this resource/weapon. Every time there is a burning truth that needs to be exposed and is twisted by the media and she does not react, it feels like she lost a couple of IQ points. Where is the Advocate?

Plot holes and inconsistencies galore. There are so many ways in which power can be wielded that are not explored. Glaring opportunities that are not taken, and even contradictions between what is and what is not possible.

Opportunities for strategic dialogue that are substituted with impetuous, petulant rebukes at the worst possible time, from a character that often responds as an ornery, overindulged child. Since Persephone has learned so much since coming to the mortal realm, she should be able to know when to shut up and when to be diplomatic, and when to ask questions and listen further in order to find the best angle to act. This character could have been developed further.

There is an existential and philosophical teaser of an interesting conversation at a very informal and simple level that never happens. There are short, loose phrases that are provocative to think about power and human nature and even religion, and these snippets go nowhere. There is so much interesting stuff that could be woven into the story (without detracting from the story), but it remains just a distant reference.

There are two extremely interesting plot lines - one along the human realm, including political intrigue and scheming that gets rushed through, and there is another one along the realm of the gods that could also be explored further. There is little space in the book for this as there is a ton of smut for it to contend with.

On the smut:

I caught myself rolling my eyes at it as it feels like the smut is taking such a huge chunk of the book and completely eating into the space of the plot and character interaction. In fact, the excessive smut slows the pace of the book, and could make it boring for some. Without the smut the plot is fast paced. After a while I just skipped the smut because it was just too much. For those of you who are looking for erotica and the plot is really not important, then yes, this is it. Now, if you want a paranormal romance where steamy scenes are part of telling the story, and the romance of a couple takes center stage along an interesting plot - with obstacles and challenges, etc, then this book may prove frustrating, unless you skip over some of the smut (like I did).

Essentially, in my opinion, it's a good book that could have been truly great, if more effort had been put into the plot rather than into the smut. There is a gold mine of opportunity right beneath the surface of what has been written so far. It's a great magical world, with interesting characters and compelling plot-lines. I will be reading the next installment and look forward to it. I am hoping the main character will have evolved a little more, and more opportunities are explored in this next one.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Lacks Cohesion, Plot Seems to Go Nowhere Until the Very End (and then not even!)
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 16 février 2023

As other reviewers have mentioned, this installment of Hades x Persephone has a serious problem with plot holes. The plot altogether just seems to meander and go nowhere, despite all that is happening: the (SPOILERS) gods being killed left and right, the havoc of a storm that Demeter is causing, throwing Theseus into the plot without seeming to know whether or not he'll serve an actual purpose - I was lost half the time. Lets tackle Demeter - Persephone spends a lot of time, as she had in other books, lamenting the toxic relationship she has with her mother, who is causing her and everyone else so much misery from afar - Demeter is literally Public Enemy #1 and yet... Persephone simply WALTZES into a museum and boom - there's MAMA JUST WALKING BY? It makes no sense, especially as Demeter is held up as such a villain here - it was very anticlimactic for Persephone to just walk in there and stumble upon her mother playing Mother Goose in a poor disguise. Sorry but that was super lazy writing. As for the rest of the plot - all the gods, despite all their powers, seem to sit on their hands and do nothing (except Aphrodite for a bit) while minor gods are being killed. The only time they bother to do anything is this long and bizarre battle royale they have in the middle of a mountain and then everyone goes home after. Like huh? What was the impact of that supposed to show? I feel like there's so much material there St. Clair could have used for the gods but alas, that too is wasted. A lot of folks mention how there's too much smut in this one, too many sex scenes - I've always been of the mind that there's no such thing as 'too much smut' but I understand how folks feel, it was like 'OKAY, WE GET IT, YOU'RE RANDY FOR EACH OTHER'. How many ways are there to write about s*x? Infinite perhaps and yet the human body only does have so many uses until it gets annoying.

As for Theseus - I feel like his appearance and actions would have made more sense in this book if he had appeared more in the previous ones. He seemed to come out of nowhere as a villain and now... what? Hades x Persephone just seemed really on the sidelines in this book, sitting on their hands as two super powerful gods would could do more but for some reason don't. Like Persephone's journalism career - she went through all that trouble of quitting New Athens News, making a big show of it do go and do what - launch a new newspaper she barely spends any time working on. I understand she had to deal with disasters in her own life and the world but c'mon sister, use the power of the pen! We fellow writers understand the power of the pen is endless and Persephone just seems to forget about it while jumping Hades bones - which she will have all eternity to do. I'm excited to see what happens next but the author needs a finale with a better bang and one that makes more sense.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles A very easy 4.5 ⭐️

This book seemed to fix all the issues I had with book 2 and Persephone navigating her grief felt very, very relatable. Any mention of Lexa made my heart hurt but I feel like Scarlett really did this part of the story justice🫶🏼

Again, Hades is still dreamy. I think he’s great and whilst he is overprotective and possessive, I like it. It’s just enough without being unbearable in my opinion!

Very excited to see how this story wraps up and how Persephone reacts to the events of the last few chapters. I hope she is a force to be reckoned with 😌

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Better than the second book but not as good as the first one
Commenté en Allemagne 🇩🇪 le 15 décembre 2022

After the second book was very boring, I am glad that this book picked up the pace again, as I love the characters Hades and Persephone a lot.
Compared to the first one, it is still weaker though and it is again because of the pacing of the plot..

What I noticed while thinking on it a bit, is that in the first book the story was structured and paced very good. And starting with the second book that got lost somehow. As again we do not start this book where we left off and rather have to read 2/3s of it to even get to that point, which is frustrating to me. Because you can't end a book on a cliffhanger and then do not address it at all, like it didn't happen, especially not if you write it in the blurb like it is going to be the main conflict.
And do not misunderstand me, I don't mind if the main conflict changes throughout the story. Just I was looking forward to finally meeting all the Olympian gods of this world and seeing how Persephone would handle it and how she would interact with her mother. And then we do not meet any Olympian until way after the halfway-point of the book.
After the first third I was so confused I thought I had read the blurb wrong.

What I really liked about the plot though, where the things with Triad, I only would have liked to see it structured differently. Like start with a meeting at Olymp with Zeus not immediatley wanting to bless the marriage of Hades and Persephone and interweave that with the Triad plot points, and in there slowly the changing of Helen. Instead Helen went full pro-triad over night and Theseus did not appear until half-way through the book. I would have liked to see his mystery set up a bit more in the first half.

And like the second book Demeter was way too absent for me. I love her as a villian, she gives me major Mother Gothel vibes and I would love to see that more play out. Why is she never trying to win her daughter back? She does not even attempt to gaslight her into coming back to her. There is so much potential that is never used in this book or the last. And again she pulls a lot of threads in the bigger conflict so why is she always so absent from the story?

The last third of the book were the best part of it by far! The plot finally came together and the cliffhanger is MASSIVE! I am very excited for the next book. And with the way things ended now, the book has to pick off where it left us. Otherwise I will not read it through!
