From Lala’s Book Reviews

I’ve basically had this book since it was first released, and I cannot believe that I have never read it until just now even with me owning special edition books of the first three books in the series.

In this world of Olympus, the Thirteen is made up of a group of people who assumes the role/characteristic of the Greek God typically from being passed down through the family line or voted upon when there are no successors.

Persephone is the sunshine daughter of Demeter who plays peace keeper among her mother and sisters. She wants nothing more than to leave Olympus when she turns 25 and a handful of months when she is able to get her inheritance to go into the world and discover who she is beyond the role that she’s been forced to place. That is until her mother and Zeus announces a surprised engagement announcement between Zeus and Persephone which leaves her blindsided. In efforts to try to recollect her thoughts and come up with another plan, Persephone decides to take a walk to clear her head only to realize that she is being followed by Zeus’s men.

Feeling trapped, she’s left with no other option than to cross the Styx River into the lower city where they mythical Hades lives, but to Persephone going into the devil’s den is better than the option of returning to Zeus and ending up like the last two Heras.

Luckily the mysterious Hades is somehow on the other side of the river to help Persephone to safety as she is near hypothermic with torn up feet from running through the city. Despite the unknowing that surrounds this Hades, Persephone wasn’t expecting to find this man who cares that her feet are cleaned up and properly tended to or that she has proper clothing for the cold temperatures.

She’s desperate to stay hidden for three months until her birthday so she can leave, and despite everything that Hades represents and embodies, she feels no ill intentions and decides to strike up a deal with him where he is able to get revenge on Zeus for killing his parents and ruining Persephone’s reputation where she is no longer the sparkly woman that the Upper City is used to seeing in the headlines.

Hades is determined to care for Persephone as he finds out that she isn’t caring for her body like she should, and throughout their conversations and time together, he finds himself slowly starting to open up for this woman and longing to see her after work, but he has to remind himself that with each smile and laugh that she give him, Persephone wants nothing more than freedom and he won’t be the person to confine her to his city.

Persephone has been able to lose the sunny persona that is “her” in the upper city and feels like she is finally able to start to breath a little with Hades and the Lower City. When she’s out with Hades on their adventures, she sees that all of the people that they meet are excited to speak with him and even joke with him. She sees that man behind the dark and brooding exterior that he has up, and they start to see the other behind the scars that life has given them. But, they are on borrowed time as the days seems to fly by.

When push comes to shove, both Zeus and Demeter are determined to get Persephone back to the Upper City and will do it by any means leaving her with the options of going back to prevent any further damage to the Lower City and Hades or leaving Olympus all together.

All I can say is that we all love a morally gray character who is perceived as the villain with a tragic back story that falls head over heals for the love interest (and he’s a d o m) *swoon*. The main thing that keeps Hades going is his need for revenge with Zeus and ensuring that his city is safe, but then Persephone comes in and changes his priorities and suddenly life has a new meaning for him and he starts to envision a life with her despite knowing that he would never be the villain in her story and force her to stay with him.

The love story between Persephone and Hades is *chef’s kiss*.

I've been wanting to read NEON GODS ever since I first heard about the book. I'm a sucker for stories about Greek gods and dark romances and this book even had the word "dark" in its title. How could little ol' me pass up the chance on a series called Dark Olympus?

Now that I've finally read the book, I have a lot of THOUGHTS. Thoughts that are conflicted and numerous, so I have decided to bullet point my likes and dislikes for my convenience and yours.

LIKES:

👍 Making Zeus a sinister Bluebeard kind of figure. Zeus is a jerk, okay? Disney's Hercules has made a lot of people picture him as some sort of benevolent Santa figure, but he was a real jerk. It's way too easily to imagine a twisted Bizarro universe where Zeus kills off all his consorts. He's just a major creep.
👍 Hermes and Dionysus. They were great. Loved the idea to gender-flip Hermes and her bromance (girlmance?) with Dionysus. The two of them were great and I wish them nothing but the best.
👍 The emphasis on consent. I like consent in books. Which is weird because I also like books that have dub-con. But fantasy is fantasy and for those who like consent, I am very happy that there are an increasing number of options trying to put the "sensual" in consensual. Especially in books that are more kink-forward.
👍 Persephone unapologetically owning her sexuality. Just this.

DISLIKES:

👎 The world building. What even is this? Is Olympus in the U.S.? Is it in its own dimension? Is this fantasy? It feels like it is kind of its own thing, but then there's all these weird references, like Persephone wanting to go to Berkeley, or Hades having a Princess Leia fetish, or Hermes stuffing her mouth with Cheetos. And then it's mentioned that some of the gods have social media accounts, and they're kind of a cross between society folk and a mafia, so who gave them all this power and how were the thirteen created and DO THEY HAVE MAGIC? Are they gods? Because at one point they're described as human, but they seem to have these preternatural talents that mark them as gods, and some of them are born to the role but others are elected and others inherit AND I AM JUST SO CONFUSED.
👎 This is not a dark romance. Which I would not have a problem with if it weren't being packaged as a dark romance. It's like ordering a dark chocolate cake and cutting it open and having all these rainbow sprinkles and gumballs come flying out. Like, yes this is a nice cake you made here ma'am BUT I DID NOT ORDER THIS FROM YOUR MENU. From a story that is supposed to be so dark, I would like some real stakes. But apart from a sinister beginning, it was just mostly, well, fluff.
👎 There's no real conflict. Persephone and Hades lust after one another at first sight. She's not at all weirded out by his exhibitionism kink and they're just magically in tune with one another in all ways. The Zeus thing and the treaty had some promise but everything gets tied off so neatly at the end that it felt like all build up and no pay-off. It was very anticlimactic, especially given all the hype.
👎 EVERYONE IN THIS BOOK IS SO STUPID. People literally think Hades is a myth because they never bothered to cross the river. Hades has public sex parties and social media is a thing. Did nobody ever find Hades's OnlyFans or something? That's like me assuming my neighbors don't exist because they don't cross the street. ESPECIALLY since one of the ways Zeus gets revenge is by cutting off the supply chain to Hades's territory. There's obviously accounting and paperwork going on and this was never addressed to my nitpicky satisfaction.
👎 It's basically porn with plot. This book wears what little plot it has like a see-through nightie. If you're picking it up for the fantasy, you're going to be disappointed. I went into this expecting something like Ilona Andrew's Hidden Legacy series and ended up with something more like FIFTY SHADES OF HADES meets A COURT OF GODS AND SMUT. Which is fine if that's what you're into, but that's not really what I'm into.
👎 Calling this grumpy vs. sunshine is an overstatement. Persephone is pretty angsty and not really a sunshiney character and Hades is just a little bit brooding but he's clearly a good guy. There's no hard or icy shell to crack away at. He is basically a chocolate-coated marshmallow. Which ties into my fluff complaint. DON'T SELL ME BROODY AND GIVE ME A MARSHMALLOW. Marshmallows don't brood. They fluff. Unless you put them in a microwave and then they explode (which I guess technically happened at the end of this book but we're not sailing on the S.S. Spoilers here).

So in short, this book wasn't what I expected but it could have been worse. There were some really great quotes and spicy scenes and I didn't hate it but I also really don't understand the hype.

I think a lot of people have an obsession with sexualizing gods, especially those aligned in Greek Mythology. This book does not fail in that department. It’s funny, sexy, and just the right about of drama. It’s the best kind of book to read when you want a good amount of spice, but don’t want to sacrifice the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it & look forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is the first book I read from Katee Robert & I wish I had found her sooner! The story is a dark twisted retelling of Hades & Persephone. The story is well written & the spice is great!!! Stay away from these books if you can't handle sexy explicit scenes.

Persephone Dimitriou is tired of her life in the City of Olympus. She is disgusted by the trading of people, services and mayhem displayed by the power-hungry ruling Thirteen. Especially as her mother Demeter, who she once trusted, has become one of them. She has a plan - when she comes of age and receives her inheritance she will leave the city and search for a life outside the confines of backstabbing and murder in Olympus. When her mother springs a surprise betrothal to Zeus on her to become the new Hera, Persephone must take drastic action. Zeus is rumoured to have killed his previous wives and treats everyone like pawns and she wants no part in that life.

Without man options, she flees across the River Styx to the Lower City. She seeks refuge from Hades who has been shrouded in rumour and myth. But Hades is very real. In exchange for his protection, Persphone agrees to bind herself to him. In return, Hades will use her to seek his revenge on Zeus for the murder of his family and deliver payback that was years in the making.

The more time they spend together the harder it is for Hades to resist his need for Persephone and for Persephone to suppress the awakening of her darker sexual fantasies. As the pair's desire grows stronger, Hades is willing to risk all-out war to keep his city safe and the woman he craves at his side. Meanwhile, Persephone must make hard decisions about what she is willing to do to protect her sisters and the man she is falling in love with.

🌟🌟🌟🌟. Phew, that was hot. The chemistry and banter between Hades and Persphone are hot and heavy from the beginning. I loved how Hades' darker instincts manifest themselves in his creative and seductive sexuality as well as his restraint on his violent physical impulses while showing his caring and protective personality in his loyalty and treatment of his people. Persephone is smart, adventurous and determined. I like that she held her own against the Thirteen including challenging Hades and not cowering to Zeus or her mother. Overall a sexy, delicious and action-packed story.

I was a little anxious about this book as there seems to be a lot of mixed reviews out there. For the most part, I was unsure whether I would mark this a 3 or 4 stars.
Let me explain my reasoning behind this: we know Katee Robert is heavy on sex scenes and not so much on plot, which is sad as I do think there's a huge missed opportunity when it comes to world-building. I still have TONNES of questions.
What's outside Olympus? You're telling me NO ONE has left?
I wouldn't *really* say Hades is dark and broody--I feel like there should've been more character development here.
I quite liked Persephone's character, and the focus on her consent and freewill.
When we put these two together, we have a good pairing, but I'm just not convinced they LOVE each other. There wasn't enough emotional development IMO. I'm also not convinced by her striking up *that* sort of bargain with Hades less than 24 hours after they met.
In normal circumstances, I would mark this a 3 star read, but I came here for the steam, not just the plot, and Katee did not disappoint. She definitely has a way with words. 👀

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tropes: Hades & Persephone retelling, fake dating, voyeurism
Series: Book #1 in the Dark Olympus series
Triggers: Abuse, death of a parent (off page), violence, guns, blood, attempted assault

In honor of Electric Idol coming out today (book #2 in the series), I wanted to get my review up for Neon Gods. I started Electric Idol, so I should have an edit soon!

I read Neon Gods in June 2021 and loved it. I completely devoured it in one sitting, which took me by surprise. For me, the biggest surprise was Hades. I did not expect him to be the way he is in this story, so I was completely enthralled. I was hooked on him and Persephone form the moment they met. On top of the romance aspect, the concept of The Thirteen is unique and truly something I haven't read before. The rivalry between Hades and Zeus amped this story up for me, especially the emotional pieces with Persephone.

Hades was my favorite thing about this book. As I mentioned earlier, he took me by total surprise. I expected him to be cold, hard, and emotionless. He was the total opposite of that. He was full of compassion, love, and wanted to help his people. The support he gave Persephone was beautiful and he just wanted her happy. He never once saw her as less than his equal, nor did he want to control her. The way he wanted her to have everything, even if that meant watching her leave, made me love him even more. He refused to let her compromise what she wanted, which is the mark of a great partner.

Persephone surprised me as well. I think it would've been easy for Katee to play her as a "damsel in distress" or make her unlikeable. Katee made her smart, witty, and full of grit. Persephone refused to go down without a fight. She wanted to try everything with Hades and I loved that for her (wish that were me with Hades, but I digress). She provided Hades with the support he needed, especially given his trauma, and it was wonderful to see. They are a wonderful pairing.

The spice in this book is good, but I read Katee's taboo series first (God, I love that series), so it wasn't as spicy as I was hoping it would be. Retrospectively, I think the spice level is just right for this story. This story is focused more on plot and trust me the taboo series isn't (but still a favorite of mine). Also, add being called "little siren" to my list of things I want to be called now 🥵

I highly recommend this book and look forward to reviewing book 2!

I love this book, not sure if it follows the real story and don't really care. Hades is hot and and amazing character that i just love, then you put them together and the steam coming off the pages was amazing.
If you like the smutty parts left in the book then you will love this book.

I can't wait to put up her other book in this series.
