Book review.
Just like the author, I am Russian. Similarly, I have lived half of my life in the UK and continental Europe.
As I often do, I started looking at the book from the back cover (the deserts in this case - there's a method to my madness ;-) . Reading through the recipes, I found them fresh and interesting, some very familiar, and some that appear authentic in the name only. Intrigued, however, by the author's engaging and humourous writing style, I turned to the book's preface to read about the author herself. That's where the intrigue stopped. I could not believe my eyes. Even a cook book had to include political references to the "dangerous trajectory of (Russia's) current regime". What, excuse me!? In a cook book? Is this now a prerequisite for any publication relating to Russia, no matter what the subject, to criticise the regime? Why "regime"? Don't they have an elected government, who, in 20 years have turned the country round and pulled it out from the abyss, as I am sure Ms.Timoshkina can attest to during her visits to her homeland? Even here she can't help, but mention the "false sense of patriotism" she finds so unpalatable, that she feels obliged to insert the sentiment into her cookery book's introduction. How, in fact, did the author manage to write a book about home cooking, which is intrinsically linked to the heart of a nation (just ask any Italian), without a healthy dose of patriotism? Shouldn't patriotism, defined by Wikipedia as "the feeling of love, a sense of attachment to a homeland", be the guiding ingredient for the recipes?
I have never picked up a book of any other world cusine and found the author making political statements. There's a different place and a different time for it.
It saddens me greatly. Needless to say, I will not be cooking from this book, I already have a bad taste in my mouth, thank you. I am forthwith returning the Salt and Time to Amazon.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles 5/5 on six recipes tried

So far I've made the plov, lagman (subbed eggplant for a veggie version), millet, cod, trout, the buckwheat risotto (with showstopper pesto!), and the honey cake (going on repeat!). Although it might take a little time (hey, it's in the title!) , everything has been very easy and turned out great and super delicious. Living in the northern hemisphere, the ingredients are easy to find. I tried many of the recipes on weeknights after work. My absolute favourite so far was the trout and potato stew in a clay pot; the gorgeous aroma when I removed the lid took me right back ( a la Anton Ego in Ratatouille) to my friends' kitchens in Russia... :) priceless! I can't wait to try more recipes. With a large cookbook collection, I sometimes feel like I already have every recipe and hesitate to buy more books, but this book is an excellent addition.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Great Russian/Siberian recipes
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 11 avril 2019

This cookbook is such an interesting take on Russian/Siberian classics. The flavours are amazing and definitely not dull (as some people imagine Eastern European cuisine to be). I now already own a few cookbooks from this part of the world but nothing feels like a repetition of what's already published. I am looking forward to trying her take on Borsch as it has less conventional ingredients yet looks very tasty. I also like how she modernised some dishes that even I as a Russian born person felt quite put off trying or having again like "herring in furs" or "salat Olivier" (my mum's version is too mayo heavy and I never felt like eating it which is quite the opposite in the book). I also did the "hedgehog" meatballs as the recipe said that it goes down well with young fussy eaters which was indeed the case with mine. I have also baked a few cakes, my favourite being the semolina one as it's incredibly simple, not too sweet and addictive. The dukkah butter is also delicious and was approved by all my English guests (so were the cakes of course).

Finally I can't finish the review without mentioning the aesthetics of the book. The pictures of the food and Siberian landscape are beautiful and I like cookbooks filled with stories and context which this one does nicely.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Perfect cookbook to preserve my Russian heritage abroad
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 14 avril 2019

I've been living abroad for almost 10 years, and when I saw this book somewhere on Instagram, I thought: This is a must-have for our family! But when it arrived, I realized that it's not only about the recipes - the book is stunning visually and to the touch. And moving on through the pages, I've realized how much I miss my grandma's and mom's cooking! It has all the traditional recipes, which I'm planning to cook one by one and show my little son a bit of his Russian roots!
Oh, and for non-Russian buyers - don't worry, all the things are absolutely delicious! If you are looking for something interesting to cook, definitely give it a go. It's totally worth it!

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Interesting read but doubt will ever use it as a recipe book

I got this on offer on Kindle to see if I wanted to buy the book and I am glad I did. It is a nice read, stories of Author's childhood and her family and how food brought them together. However, as a cookbook I really doubt I would ever use any of these recipes, quite labour intensive for the outcome and nothing really grabs me and makes me want to cook it.

1,0 sur 5 étoiles Not really Russian, more "rootless cosmopolitan snobby expat take on Russian"
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 1 mai 2022

Well, the political lecture at the beginning was certainly a bore.

I tried to overlook it, mistakenly thinking the recipes would make up for it, but no, this is mainly a book of recipes "inspired by" or "her take on" or "my version of" by a woman who isn't really a true Russian. So, net spasiba. The incredible Slavic people have developed their cuisine over many centuries, through tragedy and triumph, they don't need some jumped up urbanite "improving" it for them. The author is EXACTLY who Putin was talking about when he gave his recent speech about those Russians who have betrayed their country and people for the sake of convenience, consumerism, and western gender ideology. If you're looking for a deep, rich and loving book from a true Russian look else where (as I am now doing), this woman loves Russia so much she left it two decades ago and clearly isn't in a rush to go back.

I can't believe that this book was published on merit, it has to be networking and nepotism.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles What an extraordinary book!

Its a fantastic book packed full of Russian cuisine recipes, and then some. Alissa, the author, takes you on an extraordinarily culinary journey across the whole Russia. She weaves her own stories and reminiscences of her Soviet childhood into the book, so you know the book is based on personal insights into the Russian cuisine, rather than just a generic collection of Russian recipes. That said, the book is very hands-on and the recipes are easy to follow. I’ve baked the semolina cake, and it was delicious! It got eaten in no time, it was so good (all the credit here goes to the author, not me, as I merely followed the recipe:))
I can’t wait to try out another recipe. The challenge is to choose which one is going to be next one: there are so many!

This is an absolute treasure of a book: offering recipes from Russia that are fresh, full of flavour, and wonderful accents. This would be an absolute delight both for those well familiar with Russian cooking and complete novices. The recipes go well beyond stereotyped dishes and there are lovely personal touches in each of them. It is also a beautifully made and designed book - would make a perfect gift!

This is a recipe book that reminds one all recipe books should come with stories
