Gold Star Award Winner!

If you're looking for the definitive guide to sex and sexuality, and everything that it entails, then look no further than Heather Corinna's fact-filled book. With straightforwardness, humor, insight, and directness, the founder and editor of Scarleteen delves into every aspect of sexuality, and presents it in a way that teens and young adults (and us old adults, too!) can truly understand.

Everything -- and I mean everything! -- is covered within the pages of S.E.X. From Your Body: An Owner's Manual to To Be, Or Not To Be...Sexually Active, Ms. Corinna puts everything into perspective, for both girls and guys. There are thirteen main chapters included, along with appendixes that cover sexually transmitted diseases and infections and a bibliography and list of recommended sources (which include phone numbers and websites, as well as books).

If you've ever had questions of any type about sex, or about your sexuality, then this is the book to use as a reference. There's nothing silly or embarrassing in this book -- just straight questions and straight answers. There are parts that are humorous, but underneath it all is just frankness for the seriousness of the subject matter. Heather Corinna knows that sex is serious business, and that staying both healthy and happy is, too.

This is a great book! Give it to your sons and daughters, your nieces and nephews, your friends. Read it with them, and don't be afraid to discuss what you've read. If everyone -- regardless of age -- is informed, then sex and sexuality will never have to be a taboo subject.

Fabulous book. I just gave copies to my sons, 14 and 18, and I'm convinced it's the only sex education book they will need from now well into their 20s.

I gave each of them a copy along with this note:

"Mom and I are giving you this book, and the notes here, so that you have a great source of factual information about sex and relationships all in one place.

"We know you have had quite a bit of "sex ed" already at school, but there is always more to learn, and after looking around, we think this is one of the best resources. It goes well beyond what school teaching offers, and does a better job than I could even in hours of conversation. It's not easy for parents to talk to kids about sex, so this book at least gets the right information out to you and then opens the door for questions and discussion, whenever you want. I have been married once before and was in various other relationships, so I know a lot about this stuff and I want you to know I am totally open to questions and discussion, any time.

"Mom and I like this book because it's really straightforward and very complete, and also free of any judgmental or moralistic viewpoints. Mom and I both think that's the best approach. You have both been raised to be good and moral persons, so you will use your own "gut" (and advice from us, whenever you want it), to choose what you think is right for yourself and the people close to you.

"Giving you this book is not a substitute for talking about these issues whenever we want or need to. In the meantime, here are some tips on sections that we think you should definitely read ..."

From there I went on to highlight the "must read" sections (safe sex, contraception, consent, etc) and told them we would talk about these.

It's a great book and offers comprehensive information in a matter-of-fact, adult manner and in a format that's easy to flip through to find what you're looking for.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Like the message (empowerment) and the clear information

Thought this was very well written and very respectful of teens -- it's not dumbed-down at all. Some other reviewers said they thought it wasn't teen-friendly because it doesn't have little sound bytes, sidebars and nuggets - which might appeal to some teens, but perhaps doesn't give others enough credit.

I got this for my almost -15 year old daughter and it's one of a small handful of books that she's initiated reading. I notice that it's out after she has slumber parties with girlfriends, so I guess her friends are finding it useful too. She hasn't wanted to talk about the book per se, but I know she's found it useful because it keeps moving around her room. We've had plenty of conversations about sexuality, but I liked that this book is kind of one-stop-shopping. It doesn't sugar-coat anything, and the message is about empowerment rather than what to do or what not to do (especially for moral/religious reasons). My wife and I have been very clear with her about our beliefs, but we also believe that she's here to live her life, not an extension of ours.

The book is by the editor of the website scarleteen dot com, so if you want a sense about the flavor of the book, check out the site. I also really like that the book is very inclusive of gay, lesbian and bisexual orientations.

Overall, I would say that the book is progressive and affirms a whole range of sexual thoughts, relationships, activities, etc. as potentially healthy, and also talks about what makes a relationship healthy, etc. The author really stresses listening to one's own feelings, being true to oneself, being honest with partners, being safe emotionally and physically, and having a sexual relationship with oneself (not just masturbation, but knowing and nurturing yourself as a sexual being).

Professor Traci
5,0 sur 5 étoiles THE best sex ed book for high school and college students. Period.

I absolutely LOVE this book and cannot recommend it enough. As a college professor who teaches human sexuality, I have come across a lot of sex ed books, and this one is the best book that targets high school and college students, in my opinion: it is full of accurate facts, it's engaging, and it is written it a tone that works for this age group (e.g., it isn't old-fashioned but also doesn't try to be too hip, which can backfire and be a turn-off). I not only use it as a textbook for my First Year Seminar college class (students love it, and it's cheaper than a traditional text book), but I also bought it for my high school-aged daughter to read whenever she is ready. My favorite chapter is one called "To be...or not to be...sexually active". It has a long, detailed checklist for people considering being sexually active that is very thoughtful (heck, it's so detailed about all the things to consider that I wondered if *I* was ready to be sexually active, and I've been married for 10 years!! :-). My wife is a therapist and she often gives the chapter to her clients this age who are considering becoming sexually active. The book also covers so many important issues (not just pregnancy and contraception but relationships, emotions, gender and sexual orientation issues, abuse, rape, prostitution, you name it). I highly recommend it for parents of teens and/or college students and their kids.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Detailed information, more than you probably want to verbally share with your teen

I purchased this for my daughter (16 at the time), who has been a long term relationship (long term being subjective for high school). She's found this book quite helpful and has approached me about a few of the items that she felt needed additional clarification. It is a VERY detailed book. Parents if certain topics make you squeamish, this book will handle those topics for you. If you have certain topics you'd rather not introduce to your teen, then I hope you can shelter them a bit longer. Honestly though, with the ability to search (and view) just about any topic online, I'm not sure how well any parent can really "shelter" their teen from knowledge. My son, who is a good two and half years younger than my daughter, has shocked me with how well-informed he is about certain things. It's been to the point sometimes that he belittes his older sister for being so naive. I find this a bit disconcerting as a mom, but I guess it's to be expected. I try not to kid myself as to what teens think and do in high school so I've tried to be as open as I can with them. This book has been one of the tools I've used.

My hubs did thumb through the book before I gave it to my daughter. He looked a little green around the edges at some of the items included, but did not balk at handing it over. I'm sure he didn't want to have to discuss or answer any questions related to those topics. Hah!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Parents and Teens - Read this before, after and even during your 'TALKs'

This book is a great tool for parents to give to their teenagers! As a teen my mom gave me a couple books but they mainly covered the medical aspects of sex and since it was the late 70's/80's they were very focused on women and heterosexual sex. The sex readiness checklist is an excellent way to let young adults know what things they should think about before they become sexually active. S.E.X. covers the biological factors involved but the social, emotional and economic factors too like do you have enough money saved to cover medical expenses (e.g. annual exams, birth control, etc.). It was nice to see a discuss of same sex relationships and the insightful discussion of virginity in this context which can help heterosexual teens/parents have better discussion about the different types of sexual encounters beyond full intercourse.

My daughter and I actually had three books out during a discussion about sex and birth control and we ended up always looking at this book because it was much better than the others.

The one thing this book had a BIG miss on was on the topic of Sexting. It had one paragraph describing it but no mention of the legal and social dangers and risks of sending videos and photos via SMS/email. This is a big deal in the area we live in with 12 teenage boys recently being arrested for distributing photos. Would have liked to see more information about this to warn kids about potential concerns.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Good for wide age-range, could use slight updates

Bought this for 16 year old younger brother. Then decided to get myself a copy to have on hand at age 22. He is a straight male jock in the rural high school bubble; I am a queer graduate of a liberal sex-positive college.

I think this book is the best of a couple I looked at including Nikol Hasler's Sex: A Book for Teens (advantage of that is the shortness and readability if you're worried your teen won't put the time in; however, not as thorough or generally on point with inclusivity) and Changing Bodies, Changing Lives by Ruth Bell (just out of date since 1998 publication i.e. AIDS as death sentence, cultural changes; however, really great narratives from teens about their experiences and feelings). This is definitely the only one of those that I would want as an adult/college student.

I recommend reading or skimming this book before giving it to someone - I ended up adding some notes. For instance, the book is very comprehensive, but I added some notes on technology and sexuality i.e. social media, sexting and associated risks/legal repercussions. I think that is one of the few things that has changed or rather we have developed a greater awareness of the issues since 2007. Also told him now we say "transgender" and not "transgendered." Only other complaint is I didn't always love the organization of the book for use as a reference, but I think as long as someone reads through a lot of it at some point, it wouldn't matter.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Frank advice given in an engaging way
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 10 août 2010

Talking about sex is hard. Talking about sex with your teen is nearly impossible, if you ask me. After months of struggling through and trying to follow the advice of inserting "the talk" into normal conversation or using songs as springboards for discussion, I finally took a friend's advice and ordered this book.

It has been a great investment. Not only does Corinna have chapters on just about everything you can imagine--from homosexuality to sexual abuse to friends with benefits to Internet dating to fisting--she gives the information factually and in a way that isn't embarrassing. She also tells how to be safe every step of the way, both emotionally and physically.

I like that my daughter can look up answers on her own and that she and I can use the book to discuss various topics. I also like that the book has information for years to come. It's definitely got a more liberal take on things, but then this is a very different world we live in. As long as you have a loving relationship with your teen, then the book will provide a wealth of helpful information that can be balanced with discussions at home about what he or she is comfortable with and what your personal feelings are. Lack of knowledge is not better in these situations and neither is forbidding kids to do things.

I highly recommend this book and consider it an important sex ed tool.

This should be given to every teenager. I wish I could give it 10 stars. It's a great book that covers a variety of topics in meaningful ways. It's not super heteronormative like most sex ed books - it's inclusive and non-shaming. I buy all my kids one of these books when they are about 14-15ish. Some of the chapters address more mature issues, but really, if you think your kids aren't already wise to most of it, you're mistaken. This book will take them from the teen years into young adulthood.

I know some parents have strict religious ideas or moral codes about sexuality, so if you play the 'guilt and shame game' when it comes to sex, this book isn't for you. It's a frank, factual, evidence-based, informative book. It doesn't promote any agenda. It simply gives teens comprehensive information and encourages them to make healthy, safe, thoughtful choices that are appropriate for them individually.
