I thought this book was going to be good but I was really disappointed in the quality of research. The sample size is ridiculously small and what is even more annoying is that the college age girls she spoke to are all or nearly all in sororities, which makes it even less relevant to a larger population, assuming as I do but without concrete data, that most college girls are not in sororities. There are some important topics discussed and need more attention--e.g. preteens and early teen girls who give oral sex without batting an eye who think they are virgins. So sad to think of so many girls being used and as the author notes, the boys ask for it as if it's no big thing. Also, I found the author's habit of describing what each girl looks like as a distraction and make this book even more tabloid-like. I know she's a journalist and not a psychologist so I didn't expect it to be deep in theory but the sample size issue and the abundance of sorority girls and the description of the girls' hair styles and color only added to the tabloid factor.

My initial reaction was a kind of shock. I had bought this book for a mother whose daughter was just entering puberty...
The book ha a bright cover, interesting jacket info - but looks lie it was written on newspaper, in very small text, which for an old foggy like me makes it impossible to read without a magnifying glass. There are so many pages, I feel it will be daunting to parents just beginning to explore a subject that is, well scary.. So right off the start mothers will have a reason to "put it off"
That's it! I did not read the full book,. I'm sure it is a very important subject, but I wish it was presented in a manner that would encourage reading rather than the opposite. Good Luck with this one - PLEASE DO read at least some, so that you can make up your own mind if its worth the effort to get all the way through

much hype ~ much disappointment. As the mom of teenagers....after seeing this book lauded with praise and compliments, I thought I should read it. I found it to be pretty empty and devoid of useful information. I guess I was supposed to be surprised, shocked and then gently shepherded into the line of thought the author wanted with new marching orders in parenting my teens. Um...no....unless your head is totally in the sand you will not learn anything worthwhile here. And if you parent with both an open mind...but hope for your kids to take with them wisdom and moral decisions driven by your/their values...then just forget it. So much disappointment here.
