A beautifully written and hopeful novel

I thought this was a really beautiful novel. The characters felt well rounded and the three leads developed in satisfying ways as the book unfolds. In some ways this novel almost felt like a fable or fairy tale as three people are thrown together in a snow storm and two go to extreme lengths to help the third. I think the extreme weather, which cuts the characters off from the rest of the world, gave the novel this slightly magical feeling. Allende writes beautifully, this is only the second of her books I've read, but I'll definitely be reading more of them. She writes about the brutal events in the pasts of the two female leads, Evelyn and Lucia (in Chile and Guatemala respectively), in a way that feels truthful and real, without being exploitative of the pain of real people who may have gone through very similar experiences. I didn't find the sections dealing with Richard's past as engaging, as he had a more selfish past, but these sections were still interesting. This story had an incredibly hopeful feel to it, and a much happier ending than I was expecting, considering much of the pain and hardship all three characters experienced, which was very lovely. I purchased this as an audio book, as well as a kindle edition, and read some parts, and listened to others. The audio book was read very well.

very page there is sadness. There is also the Spanish people sharing their strength and perseverance in the midst of struggle. They travel through Guatemala, Mexico, and into our United States always holding on to hope that their dreams will come true. Some times it is just a matter of dreaming about no one forcing them to fight in gangs for their protection, or to get whisked away from retributions against their families. While reading about their cares, their courage bleeds on to the page and in to the souls of those who read the novel. In The Midst of Winter is Isabel Allende's testimony to all of us in the human race that life isn't necessarily easy. It's difficult. Still, there are always people who care and are willing to give a helping hand. I am grateful to the author for introducing me to new home lands and new people who might one day look up at the Statue of Liberty and say 'these Americans have kept their word."

Isabel Allende never fails to deliver! This book has everything……even a December Romance. All the characters have a journey inside of themselves, both physical and emotional. Love, courage, forgiveness, resilience, mystery, redemption and at the heart, the undeniable strength of the human spirit and condition. I loved it!

Isabel Allende, one of my all time favorite authors, has hit one out of the park again.
I just finished In the Midst of Winter last night and am still enthralled with the story so much that the characters are playing in my head. This newest novel of hers has all of the elements of her previous novels, but with a twist. The immigration and human trafficking elements are timely and the message of finding love and passion in our later years is truly beautiful. As always in Isabel Allende books, I learned something new, was carried along in a marvelous adventure, and at times cried as well as at times laughed out loud. In my book, you can't beat an evening reading one of her books. I will say it again, I love Isabel Allende!

I could not put this book down. The past and present intertwine, with the improbable decisions of two of the characters in present day creating an allegory of trauma that is improbable and yet healing. I appreciated the history and learning the stories And tragedies that brought the characters to their point of intersection. Trauma is painted simply in this book and without melodrama. The cultural insights add richness and depth. This book addresses key issues and undercurrents of our time with expertise, which adds to its importance.
