Let me make it clear from the start, I just love all of Isabel Allende's books. I just love some a little more than others. Kudos to the translator who keeps the power of Allende's descriptions and beautiful descriptions with tender attention to the subtleties of effecting any translation as being as true as possible to the original in spirit. First I read Eva Luna, so I had to read the Stories of Eva Luna. Some of the included short stories assume the reader has previously read Eva Luna, or they lose impact. Other stories seem to stand alone and do not rely on the preceding book. I preferred these standalone stories and feel the sequencing of the stories could have flowed better thematically. I love the idea of being able to digest a stimulating tale or two before going to sleep, especially when they are well written and provocative. No living author provides this kind of insight into the female psyche and sensuality. It seems to takes a well-educated latina raised outside of the USA to show how there is life, glowing life, passion and struggle below the border both literally and figuratively.

Many of them worked for me, some did not. But I'm glad I read them. They are all self-contained and short, so you can easily do one or two at a time. The ones that worked seemed like small gems.

Letters of Betrayed Love and Two Words were my favorites.

I've read them in both English and Spanish (to help improve it) and the translations by the renown Margaret Sayers Peden are simply terrific overall! You're not missing anything not reading them in Spanish as I see it, though I have to admit I'm hardly the best to judge.

If you like these you might also consider the collection of short stories Strange Pilgrims by García Márquez, which I actually liked better overall. Also with knockout translations by Edith Grossman. But the Allende collection is good.

One of the short stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende (La Venganza) "The Vengeance"
is the basis for a new opera by Lee Holdridge, called "Dulce Rosa". It will receive a world premiere in Santa Monica next Spring, conducted by Placido Domingo, who heads Los Angeles Opera.
Since I talk to groups about upcoming operas, and since this will be a completely new work to audiences, I began my preparation by reading the short story. It is so short that I wondered how the composer managed to write a full-length opera. It is only seven and one-half pages. Then I read the story and I understood. The story is concise, fascinating, haunting and has all the necessary ingredients needed for a genuine musical drama of the highest level. Story details should be left to the reader, as some events are unexpected. I appreciate the service provided by Amazon and am enjoying reading the other short stories in the book, but my primary interest was in this one particular tale. Ms. Allende's personal history enables her to tell this story with an understanding that only comes from her own life and that makes the tale even more fascinating. To your readers, I can only say read the story and see or hear the opera following its premiere next year. You, too, will find it haunting and memorable.

First, read "Eva Luna." Then read this volume of short stories that range from the outrageously erotic to astoundingly delightful to downright melancholy. The stories, each of which is a little treasure in its own right, are so intense that I found I could only read one or two at a sitting to fully appreciate them. Author Isabel Allende was born to tell stories!

The premise of this book is based on the novel "Eva Luna," the fantastical story of a poverty-stricken girl living in an unnamed South American country. Eva Luna is orphaned at a young age and learns to rely on her wits, love of words and storytelling to survive. At the end of the book she is lying in bed with her lover, who asks her to tell him a story she has never told to anyone else. And so Eva Luna begins spinning her enchanting tales, 23 in all.

I have always loved Isabel Allende's work. And I'd read nearly all of her work. So, no surprise that I picked up these short stories. I love her characters and the surprise endings in these little treats.
