4,0 sur 5 étoiles Juliette (Ella) and Warner (Aaron) Discover More About Their Past, While Dealing With Their Dramatic Futures
Commenté en Australie 🇦🇺 le 20 décembre 2022

This story is all about revelations.

One of the biggest revelation is….

Never believe an author when they take the brave step to kill most of the main characters at the end of the previous story…

Yep,.

In typical cliffhanger style…
Things are not always as they seem… ( sigh)

Juliette and Warner, both confront further truths regarding their combined pasts, in this story, while continuing to be pursued by The Reestablishment.

In this book both start out being held captive, while Kenji negotiates his way around a new ( possible ) relationship with Nazeera.

As the latter two dance around mutual appreciation for each other’s appearances, bordering on the physical, what is left of the Sector 45, crew try’s to come to terms with, what now?

This book is more about introducing Nazeera into the fold as Kenji’s new love interest.

There appears to be nothing the super confident Nazeera can’t do.

She has been hiding her abilities away for far to long, and now, is itching to finally be able to take a stand against her tyrannical father, and join the resistance group left over from Sector 45.

As the story progresses, Juliette find out she is, in fact, someone else…Ella.

Ella Sommers.

AND!

She has a sister Emmaline.

She knows this because after the dramatic ending of the previous book, her crazy mad scientist parents took her away to Oceania.

And all was revealed.

Warner, who Juliette ( Ella) is now referring to as Aaron is also confronted with some shocking revelations of his own…

One big one revolves around his dear old Dad.

However,

By the time this instalment draws to a close, we are given a lull, …a reprieve…, in the chaos, as we take time out so Ella and Aaron, can spend some time being normal, loved up teenagers.

We get to have a gooey moment while the 45 crew, get to throw Aaron his first EVER birthday party…
As cute as this moment is….
I almost…ALMOST! cringed…as this started heading into the typical YA territory.

This soppy moment, while I’m sure some reads would of appreciated, did nothing for me..

Also, I’m probably going to be the only reader not happy about Nazeera and Kenji.
But.
Whatever.
I’m still getting ready for the next instalment.

Towards the end, your heart would bloom in joy! Aaron, oh lord Aaron, he’s gonna stay with me for a real long time! And Ella? She helps me hope, to hold on to life! ♥️
The plot is simple, with not much twists n turns! But it’s the characters who will hook you to the series!🍀

I absolutely love that Defy Me is narrated by Juliette, Warner, and Kenji. It really has to be since they are all split up, but I do enjoy being in Kenji’s head. So much happens in this book. I had no idea where it was going at the end of the previous book but whatever I thought might happen it wasn’t this. There was just one thing after another. As always the writing was incredible. I really don’t know how this is going to get wrapped up in one more book! I recommend it to everyone who enjoys the Shatter Me series of course.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles A big fan feeling a little disappointed
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 11 septembre 2019

I love the Shatter Me series. I remember reading the first book not long after it came out years ago. I suffered through the waiting period for books 2 & 3. I feel books 1 - 3 are worthy of 5/5 stars. I love them! However, with this being the 5th book I feel really disappointed.

This book is told from three points of view - Kenji, Warner (Aaron), and Juliette (Ella). I know lots of people who are a fan of the books love Kenji and I do too. I remember the 'we want more Kenji' fan service days. I think he has some of the best lines in the book. However, with this book I miss having only Juliettes point of view. When you strip back this book and look at the whole plot there isn't much substance to it. This is because the book is spread out over three points of view.

Personally, and I feel the need to add that because you may disagree, that this story would have had more justice with one point of view. Kenji is great and all, but he would have been better as a spin-off book or a book that is set as Kenji's POV to the events that happen in the story. In the fourth book I quite enjoyed seeing Warners point of view, however, I don't think it was necessary. The success of books 1 - 3 proved that having only Juliettes POV did well to tell a story. Don't get me wrong I love seeing inside Warners mind. I just feel it would've been a similar case to Kenji - his own POV of the events in his own book or even a chapter at the end of the book that allows us to peer inside his mind.

~ SPOILERS BELOW ~

So the book begins with Juliette and Warner missing. We kick off with a lot of Kenji and Warner POV's I was beginning to think that Juliette wasn't going to have a POV. I understand the importance of Kenji's POV being to fill us in on everything that happens at sector 45 since Juliette is gone, however, I feel that could have been a whole chapter conversation later in the book between Kenji and Juliette, rendering his POV's kind of pointless.

With Juliette I feel the big build up, to put it in the simplest of terms, from book one was about who is she and where did she come from. Better yet, who are her parents? In this book I was hoping lots of answers would be given. Nope. Not really. Really quick and brief about who they are and what they do. Most of the time in Juliette's POV she was drugged up and barely awake. It just involved a lot of her past memories coming back for most of the book. I was hoping for more information about her parents. I just feel the 'family storyline' needed more substance and this would have come from more Juliette POV's in the beginning, before her past memories started coming to her.

In terms of her and Warner's rescue I would've thought a more in-depth POV from Kenji would've happened, especially since Kenji seems to be in this book a lot. That was not the case. He just kind of turns up with Nazeera. I knew they were going to rescue her after he got tricked into thinking Nazeera was batting for the other team. However, there was no plan or full length conversation. He just turns up in one of Juliettes POV's... That's just me nit-picking though.

So far I don't seem to feel Kenji's POV is nothing but a fan service and completely taking up potential plot substance from what could have been more Juliette POV's. I'm going to stop complaining and give my vision for what this story could have been. I'll keep it brief and to the point.

>> HERE IS HOW I WISH THE STORY WENT... all from Juliettes POV! If you haven't read the book this might not make sense.

Beginning - Wakes up in an unfamiliar place. Attempts to find out where she is. Parents show up and over the course of a few chapters they get her into a false sense of security. She believes they are good. She learns a bit about her past and the Reestablishment from them. Happy family right? I understand she will be concerned about Warner and her friends, however, I'm sure that some kind of illusion (like at the end of book 4) could be done to make her think they are safe (fooling even us readers into thinking they are okay). As we near the middle of the book Juliette stumbles upon photos of her and Warner at different age levels, sparking the memories of them coming back to her. She starts to suspect something isn't quite right and this sparks her need to find out.

Middle - As she starts to dig for information her parents start to show their true colours. This is when all the horrible things that actually were written in book 5 actually happen to Juliette. Kenji and Warner rescue Juliette (yes Warner is never at the same place as Juliette like its told in the book). During the rescue this is when Anderson is found to be alive! They bump into him during their escape. Warner attempts to kill him and that is when they see him heal right before their eyes, realising that he has the power to 'sort-of' heal.

On the plane a conversation about what actually happened at sector 45 when she went missing - this is where we find out what happened to her friends and the sector.

End - The same ending that happened in the book.
