4,0 sur 5 étoilesLoved it but..
Commenté en France 🇫🇷 le 24 octobre 2022
Loved the book ! Very well written and characters (there’s quite a few) are so endearing ! The love story, the war in the main characters life, being torn between all her dilemmas and having literally her own self being her worst enemy because, she just can’t stop thinking for others and never takes care of her self. Quite touching.

The but comes for the love interest. While I love it when a grumpy guy becomes a lover or even the quite sensible persona, I thought it was a little too much to be frank. There were moments where it was almost alarming and toxic.. the Neanderthal took sometimes over the cute level of grumpiness we all love.

**SPOILER**

Other but will be the end… yes I shed a tear but at the end, with a little recoil, it was just too packed up and too perfect… like everyhing, literally everything ended up like in a fairy tale and each of the problems got solved, many couples got created and don’t make me start on the house mariage kid combo that happened waaaay too fast. The fact that her husband is in the headset « if you want something I’ll make it happen, I’ll give it to you, you’ll get it » opposes the beginning of the book where the main character aspires to a life of independency and wants to be able to take care of her self. The book literally ends on the guy taking care of the girl in the most manly, sexist way possible and it was a little disappointing for me.

Other than that, good read !

3,0 sur 5 étoilesNovel with graphic sexaul experiences
Commenté en France 🇫🇷 le 18 mars 2023
I was I bit shocked not to read in the review that it had graphic sexual experiences, more so than the story its self. Ordered it for my 13 year old daughter. It should have a age warning on it.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Cringey, toxic relationship, every trope possible
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 14 février 2023

The top review on Goodreads caught it perfectly, and I should have read it before buying this book.

The most mature character was the 11 year old niece.
The female had little personality outside of coffee, thinking every man in town was sexy despite just running away from a wedding (which she didn't seem to grieve at all), and making it her mission to fix people
The male lead was better written in the beginning, but I quickly realized it was really just an overreliance on f bombs and trying too hard to be the cool aloof bad boy at the age of....42? That's not cool at that age - it's sad and emotional immaturity.
They are both walking red flags.
Got through the first 300 pages and still nothing had really happened and there were no hints or explanations for anything. The reader knows about as much about the sister's disappearance and the failed wedding over 300 pages in as we did in the first 10. It was just...stuff happening, for no reason, and then horrible cringey dialogue during sex scenes.

You could sum up the book as this: a helpless, anxious woman who has built her whole personality around coffee, falls for a horrible guy who literally pushes her around, PHYSICALLY, while daydreaming about orgasms. This is supposed to be sexy. Somewhere in there is a mystery the author doesn't care enough about to address anywhere in the first half of the book.

I know with fiction you're supposed to suspend disbelief, but this was flat out bad writing.

***
Spoilers ahead:
***

- Despite being horrible to each other constantly, the relationship begins when...he buys her underwear? Wtf?
- Knox is constantly invading her personal space, literally PUSHING her and yanking her around, and this is supposed to be...hot?
- We are supposed to believe that this woman with no bar or wait experience is SUCH an amazing waitress that the hardened criminals let her into a hand of their poker game and gift her $20,000 because...she's naive and charming? Her skirt is short?
- Also, it starts off saying she has nothing but $20 to her name...but then she gives the whole 20 as a tip for (of course) coffee, but then suddenly has pens and markers and a notebook and more secret cash her sister didn't discover?
- For an alleged small, southern town, the story also had every possible diversity token like it was trying to check off a checklist
- It had every. Trope. Every good rom com trope plus all the bad ones, and it wasn't even funny
- The chapter and a half about all the girls at the bar having their periods together and feeling so terrible they couldn't work, with every weird period nickname in the book, that made the whole town allegedly stay away from the bar for a full week every month - that's when I threw in the towel and put down the book.

I really wanted to like this book, for starters I love the cover and the description sounded fun, plus all the rave reviews etc. I probably would have enjoyed this when I was younger, I think perhaps I'm too old now for this kind of book or maybe because its written by an American, I'm not sure but I just found it really silly and not very engaging. So much unnecessary swearing and like why were knox and nash literally fighting over naomi? They don't even know her! Omg the plot was ridiculous, and the dialogue super cringe, I just couldn't get past chapter 7.

Do you enjoy small-town romance with plenty of heartwarming moments, likeable side characters and grumpy/sunshine vibes? If so, don’t read this. Just kidding. Kind of.

Listen, I don’t like being a contrarian and this review was difficult to write. Anytime a book becomes a bestseller and is highly reviewed on every social media platform there is, I get anxious before reading, hoping it doesn’t disappoint. While I wouldn’t say Things We Never Got Over was severely disappointing, I would say it did fall below my expectations based on popular opinion. I didn’t find the story particularly captivating, and thought it was initially difficult to get into. I also found it to be formulaic and slow-paced. The fact that it was 572 pages long did not help in the slightest.

Bottom line—I give it 2.5 stars. Do I think this book could have been shortened by at least 200 pages and still have told the same story? Absolutely. Did I think the MMC groveled enough after being a complete a$$hole throughout most of the book? Certainly not. Will I read the next book in the Knockemout series when it comes out? Probably not.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Shark Week Care Package?
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 14 octobre 2022

Okay, I'm going to try not to repeat what so many people have said about the miserable Knox character. He's an ass with not one good quality except, apparently, his sexual prowess. Same plot in a million other books.

A lot of things annoyed me about this book but one that stands out in my mind was the author's obsession with menstruation. The ridiculous monthly care package that Knox gives his employees because they've somehow managed to sync up their periods and everyone in the entire town knows to avoid the bar during that week. (Riding the cotton pony? Seriously?) If any boss gave out monthly packages of Midol and heating pads to his employees, he'd be slapped with a lawsuit so fast he'd start bleeding himself. She even brought up periods again towards the very end with her sister and niece while they were trying to hide from Tina's boyfriend to hatch their plan.

And WTF was with everyone thinking that Naomi's vocabulary was so high end? There was nothing erudite about her character whatsoever. She was a doormat with low self esteem. Period. (Yeah, I just had to throw that in there!)

Anyway, the reason I didn't give this book one star is because it was entertaining at some points. However, at 500+ pages, my time would have been better spent doing just about anything else.

You've been warned.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles If you like Cat & Mouse romances, this book is for you!
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 16 août 2022

SPOILERS:
Cat & Mouse Romance with a lot of sex scenes. Most annoying. They hate each other. They crave each other. They finally get together, have lots of sex, break up, whine and mope, and get back together again. Everyone happy at the end. Very predictable. Cheesy. Nothing profound. Good for a reader who wants something not-brain-taxing after reading too many WWII historical fiction books. What’s with all of the weird names and nick names? Naomi is Daisy (got that, she had her wedding daisies still in her hair), Daze, Not Tina, Nay and Goody. Lucian is Lucy. We’ve got a kid named Waylay and dog name Waylon. How weird is that? Of course, just to be as diverse and inclusive as possible, we had to have the male gay best friend Stef, the two women raising some girl and the two men raising another child. That’s all honorable but did the author follow a diversity and inclusion checklist? Oh wait, no Asians. Did we have a bi-racial couple? We had “dark skinned” mentioned but, does that mean Black or Hispanic? The Code Red women menstruating together blurb made me think I was back in the 60’s or 70’s hearing crass guys talk. At 20% I realized I could throw in the towel or just stick with it and get to the end. I stuck with it. Nothing to rave out. Mostly tacky. I don’t feel like I totally wasted my time or brain cells. However, I could have read/done something more productive. If you just want to escape and chill, this book is for you. Don’t expect more than that. Glad it only cost $4 and change.

2,0 sur 5 étoiles Too Immature for Me

Now in my early 50’s, I am completely over the brooding, moody, controlling male as the romantic interest. It’s a wash, rinse, repeat romance recipe that is been done to death! The sex was very hot - but the book was clearly written with sequels in mind with what will likely be the same tired recipe and honestly, hurt the storyline. The villain could have been stronger and darker but alas, too much time wasted on too many characters with trendy names. I finished it because I thought it might surprise me - it didn’t. This is a skip for anyone who isn’t into the “she needs protecting but I can’t commit BS”

Full transparency, I mistakenly bought this book on Amazon while purchasing as many Colleen Hoover books I could get by grubby hands on. IEWU really did that to me.

Back to the review of this book- I wanted to like it, but quickly noticed within the first 30 pages the unoriginality. I held off on looking at any reviews or forming my conclusion until I completed the book.

The plot felt forced, with other aspects of it seeming rushed. Storyline was also just not very believable to me. Naomi deserved much more but essentially was turned into a “pick me girl”, Knox was so wishy washy and had contradictory behavior than what his actions displayed. Not trying to attack his character, but how could he be so up to date behaviorally with supplying your menstruating employees a “monthly care package”, but misogynistic, possessive, and partially verbally abusive to a woman who had done absolutely nothing to him? This behavior only eases up slightly when she sleeps with him, but even after that he doesn’t want to commit to her past his own acceptable lengths but acts as if he owns her. I was hoping for more detail to truly captivate me as the reader, but feel the most descriptive parts were written when there was sMex *cringe* Parts of the storyline really could have improved the integrity of this book had they been expanded on realistically. Waylay’s character development, Lucian and Sloane, maybe even why Tina was the way she was just to name off a few. Overall, it was a decent read but not really anything I’d suggest to anyone looking for a book with substantial matter.

I purchased this book after reading all the rave reviews and it was on offer for 0.99p. It is not really my cup of tea. It is very slow, huge chunks of nothing really happening and I just don't care for any of the characters. It has taken me over a month to get 55% of the way through it and since I came this far, I will finish it, but this is the last time I ever buy a book because Tik-Tok hypes it up.

I went into reading this book knowing it was going to be a romcom and anticipated it would be a little cliche/cheesy at moments. I felt like it was a little overdone with a very predictable plot. I didn’t like how they boiled the main characters personality down to liking caffeine- as if that was some kind of quirky/different trait that no other woman has ever had…. I also thought it was very unrealistic that the whole entire town would come to her defense so many times like no one has anything better to do than to save this damsel in distress. Overall it was a very light read that you will enjoy if you like mindless reading
