5,0 sur 5 étoiles Great information and discuss of the human body and reproduction

I got this book to read and discuss with my 9 year old son who has been infatuated with the human body parts recently. He really enjoyed the book and even read it on his own and let me read it to him again so we could read it together. I like the approach and honesty in the book. Illustrations are great. He did still ask, but how does the man get his sperm to the woman's egg? So be assured it is informative but not overly detailed for young minds, so you can fill in any gaps as you see appropriate.

I purchased this book, along with another one, mainly because I now have a 9 1/2 yr old who needs to know more specifics, since she's getting older. I have two girls, currently ages 6 1/2 yrs and 9 1/2 yrs. I've always been open and honest and answered any questions that they have had... at this point, my older one knew where babies came from, about an egg, a sperm, but not HOW it all happened and it was time to know. I knew I'd do better with it all if I had a book to start off with... and so began my search. This is definitely a good one, but we might need a second in a few years... only b/c these pictures are a bit cartoon-y (but they are accurate and appropriate at all times).

When the books came in the mail, I decided to show both girls and let them know that we can read it together, or they could read it alone and then come to talk to me about it... making sure that they fully understood that I did not want them to "read it and then never talk about it". My little one gravitated to this one right away! The other book I purchased was a book more about a girls' periods and growing up, so my 6 yr old had no interest in that one at all... this one was "all about babies and bodies" according to her... she calls it the "Body book". It's too in depth for her to read by herself (but my 9 yr old could if she wanted to) but she loves to read parts of this book at night. It's a book you can skip around in or skip certain parts. Be prepared to read this over several nights/ weeks... it is a long book and not a "story book" type you can read in one shot. Each chapter can function on its own if you wish.

Parents definitely need to be aware that this is a very "liberal" book... it does have a whole page on homosexuality (in the chapter on "what's love"; it goes over the terminology and what it means), and medium size paragraphs on miscarriages, abortion, adoption, birth control (those terms are all used), and a half-page on in-vitro fertilization/ artificial insemination (here they do not use those terms, but explain how it works). All those topics are covered in a matter-of-fact way (with no opinion written about it; it is left for the parent to interpret) and tastefully done. Any of these topics are able to be easily skipped and gone back to at another time if the parent feels the child (or parent) is not ready for the topic yet. I chose to skip over a few of them (to come back to them at a later time) and we did read about some of the others... it totally depends upon your values/ opinions, but just know that they are in the book and you probably will need to come back to them at some point if the child picks up the book at a later time.

My 9 yr old is not a big fan of this book... but I don't think she would be a big fan of any book that discusses sex... She was the one that reacted with "ewww! Yuck!!" (and various other reactions) when we read the (simple) paragraph about what sex is. My six yr old was fine with the whole thing! Perhaps my 9 yr old could have used the "middle school" version of this book (the "next" one in the series) since she is a pretty mature kid (or so I thought before I heard her reaction!)... not sure since I haven't seen that one. But I was looking for one I could use with both kids easily, and this is definitely fine for her. The other book most likely will get into things I'm not quite ready for her to talk about (boys, dating, who knows!). I do think this is a great book, and read with discretion, could even be used with preschoolers if you've got a bigger age range of children you want this to fit with... just keep in mind you may need to skip or gloss over certain parts (with the idea you will go back to them at a later time) depending upon how young the child is. I definitely suggest you read over each chapter before reading it with your children so you don't accidentally get into something you were hoping to wait on.

Keeping all that in mind, this book is definitely a good one, and one that you will want to keep on the shelf nearby ready to go back to and keep the discussion going all through your kids' years. After all, this is NOT a discussion that should be a one time discussion and never to be brought up again... especially since these kids do live in different times than we did.

Purchased this book to start educating my 8yr old son. My son said he loves the book because it’s “so interesting and educational”. We are a realistic family and don’t sugar coat anything so this was great and age appropriate. Each chapter is a great follow up from the previous chapter and we break between to answer any questions he may have. Wasn’t sure when to start the sex talk but with family members having babies questions starting to come up and I wanted to answer everything he questioned before he heard stories from older kids on the bus. He loves science so I think he thinks the book is a science book about bodies and people. He hates reading so I’m surprised h sits o till for the book.

My 5 year old had more questions than "Amazing you" could answer. I went with my gut on this book and it didn't disappoint. The material also allowed my kids to ask more thoughtful questions which the book then did a great job of answering. My 7 and 5 year old keep wanting me to read this! Some of the themes in the book they're not asking questions about and I'll have it handy for when they do.

This book is almost perfect. The writing and illustrations keep my child engaged. I appreciate the honesty and inclusion of tough topics. The one part that is missing is around egg and sperm donors. It is becoming more and more common. It would be great if it were included.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Harris's series of age appropriate books takes the guess work out of family sex education.
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 13 novembre 2015

I am a mental health counselor and I work with children, teens and families. I love this series of books!!! I have bought so many copies and lent/given them out to friends and clients. Talking to children about bodies, sex and sexuality can be intimidating. Most parents aren't really sure where to start or when to start talking about these issues. Harris's series of age appropriate books takes the guess work out of family sex education.

It is extremely important to educate your children on topics of healthy sexuality, bodies and families. Believe it or not, you are probably more nervous about talking to your children about sex than they are. They can handle the truth. Seriously. Just follow along with the book and take a matter of fact sort of attitude when reading together. Allow children to ask questions and do your best to give accurate answers. Children will learn that its ok to have questions and to talk to their parents about these issues.

Favorite things about the series:
1. Age appropriate books allow parents to start educating their children early! I have seen many families try to provide too little information too late. By the time a child is reaching puberty, they have likely heard inaccurate information about sex from media or other children at school. Adolescents are also much more likely to get embarrassed when their parents try to talk with them about these issues. 4 year olds, and even 10 year olds are unlikely to be embarrassed. They will follow along with the fun cartoons and simple straight forward text and pictures.

I have found that older children have also benefited from being exposed to these books. It's a little more difficult with older children who express embarrassment. Try to stay calm and matter of fact to make them more comfortable. I like to ask older children what they already know and then use to book as a resource to fill in gaps of knowledge.

2. The books are inclusive and talk about important topics such as love, intimacy and different types of families. One of the major topics that families miss when sex educating their children is the emotional aspect of sex. These books allow the opportunity for parents to talk about the emotional implications of engaging in sexual acts and creating a family. This opens up opportunities to talk to children about your family's beliefs and values surrounding sexual relationships.

3. These books talk about safety and sexual assault "good touches and bad touches". One of the important reasons for teaching young children accurate information is to protect them. Children who know proper names for genitalia and have been taught healthy sexuality are more equipped to report sexual assault. I always remember a story from when I was working in a residential treatment center for children. One young girl had reported that her uncle touched her "pussycat". It took a long time for anyone to figure out that she had been sexually assaulted because of the use of a euphemism. Children should not be ashamed of their bodies. Teach proper sexual anatomy words to young children along with head, shoulders, nose and feet. They won't be embarrassed, but if you are, you can explain to them that talking about their private areas when in public is socially inappropriate. I always explain to young children that their private parts are anything that is covered up when they put on a bathing suit. That seems to be simple enough.

I strongly encourage parents and caregivers to check out this series!

I haven't given this book to my 8yo daughter yet (we're currently reading another book about puberty first), but I read the entire thing. First, it's a decently hefty book and is great about defining words before delving into the actual process of things. The cartoonish illustrations give a fun and lighthearted balance to the scientific subject matter.

Second, I was pleasantly surprised by the detail included - for example, that both circumcised and uncircumcised penises are both perfectly fine and normal. I like that it emphasizes how boys and girls are similar in lots of ways before going into how they are different. There is one full page illustration of nude bodies (tastefully done) growing up, and of course labeled diagrams of genitalia. I also appreciated that this book explains without judgement - there are (brief) sections about heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual, transgender, and abortion, and explains what these words mean without placing judgement or value on any of them.

I'm glad my daughter and I are reading a more detailed book for girls regarding puberty first (Celebrate Your Body: The Ultimate Puberty Book for Girls - also highly recommend!), because while this one does cover all of that, it doesn't explain much on emotions, hormones, etc. But it touches on MANY topics and is a good springboard for more questions and discussion between parent and child.

I have no problem with my children learning that we can love people of the same gender or that contraception exists and sometimes people have sex because it feels good. Overall, I am happy that this book is solidly scientific but also tastefully brings up social "issues" in an unbiased manner.
