The new girl doesn't belong here. So why can't I stop thinking about her? Iris Briggs a goodie two-shoes with a headmaster father who aims to ruin my school year before it's even begun. She gets under my skin. With her demure skirts and braided hair, Iris flits around the periphery until she runs right into me, hot coffee soaking me as she looks up at me with wide, innocent eyes. We start off scalding.
In the library, we reach lava levels.
And then in the city? We go nuclear.
She's a good girl, but I'm a Constantine. My duty is to my family. At least, it was until I started unbraiding the good girl and realizing there's more to life than duty.

As one of the most popular boys at Pembroke Academy, a boarding school for the rich, he's more than used to the political games the upper elite are known to play. Especially when his own mother, Caroline Constantine, is usually at the forefront of them. For Keaton however, that status comes with a whole load of expectations, including the idea that he'll have an arranged marriage to his long term family friend, who is from an acceptable family in Caroline's eyes.
Iris Briggs is not only the new girl at Pembroke, but also the new Headteacher's daughter. Meaning she's more than used to having to live up to others expectations of her, especially her father's. Whilst her dad wants her to follow in her older sisters' footsteps, Iris' dream has always been to head to Paris and carry out a photography course. On her first day at school, she manages to get herself on Keaton's bad side and thinks she has his character all figured out. Yet somehow, after getting paired together on a school project, they can't seem to stop the s*xu*l tension from growing between them.
I absolutely adored Keaton in the other books that I saw him in. He's constantly referred to as a baby Winston and whilst he may have his own dreams, he definitely has the shark like instincts that his older brother and mother have. 'I was a Constantine and the world would be mine for the taking, whether I did what my family wanted or not.' To be honest, I thought we'd see more of that side to him in this. But whilst he's not afraid of holding back with his dirty talk in order to get Iris to admit that they have chemistry between them. "So that wasn't you licking your lips while you stared at my mouth?" I didn't feel that more dominant aspect to him show up like I was expecting. I did like that we got to see a more emotional part of him though. It's obvious how much he misses his father and he's desparate for his mother's affection, in order to not feel like he's been cast aside. 'I'd chosen my mom. My family. Over the girl I'd fallen for. And now she knew.'
I enjoyed getting to see the flirty, s*x**lly charged tension between these two. "I like it when you're mouthy too, you know." The scenes when they were together were built up well and the dark room scene was defintely one of my favourites! Iris tries to make some attempt to stay away from him, but Keaton proves to be just too damn irrisitable and I can't say I blame her much for going back for more. Just a kiss," she murmured... "Just one. Or two."
However, the angst between them due to Keaton's situation with Clara is what I was here for! Although Iris knows her parents won't be too pleased with her having a relationship with Keaton, her main concern is that she's being treated like a dirty little secret and she doesn't want to be dumb enough to still fall in love. 'I ran all the way back to the headmaster's residence, and not once did I look back - not because I was afraid he'd be chasing me. But because I knew he wasn't.' Ughhh! My heart broke absolutely broke for Iris in this scene, and even though I knew why Keaton had done what he had, I still wanted to hit him for not speaking up earlier.
Enjoyed reading this overall and rated it 3.8 stars. I loved the dirty talk, angst and also the little epilogue at the end that showed how they were as an actual couple. However, I do wish this had been a longer book, so their storyline could've played out over a longer timeline and we'd have gotten to see more relationship development and grovelling from Keaton at the end. This is quite a fast paced story and whilst I liked that it was a faster burn, I wanted to see more behind the reasons of why the pair 'hated' each other, as I didn't think their reasons were fully justified at the start to be honest. I am looking forward to hopefully seeing more of the pair when reading the rest of the Hellfire series though. We saw little hints, when Keaton and Iris were with their friends, as to who else would be pairing off, so it will be fun to see their stories!
Wicked Idol is book 1 of the Hellfire Club series. Although it is also part of the Midnight Dynasty World, it can be read as a standalone.

I'm hard pushed to come up with any positives other than that the book was well edited and not full of typos like so many are these days. The negatives, however, are manifold. The MC is not even close to being a bully; the story leaps to the old "FC cannot resist the MC when he starts coming on to her" trope (which is just annoying, I have yet to read a review where a reader actually likes such a pathetic FC reaction yet authors continue to use it) within a handful of pages and the FC/MC are engaged in multiple sexual encounters. The FC moans about "hating" the MC but the reasons are completely unclear as the MC is not a bully and is just a normal guy; the FC whines about the MC being the only one that "sees her" - to be clear, this is within about 20% of the story without the FC/MC having any meaningful conversations (aside from sexual encounters) so I am unclear how he could "see her"; there are alot of sexual encounters which I assume the author intends to be hot but are really not - again, virgin FC's who are apparently nyphomaniac's at heart is also a terrible trope.
Sometimes books that follow a format can still be engaging reads but this one is not. I will not be reading any more of these stories

From the start I was expecting more of a bully type romance when it came to the hero, Keaton Considine. After all he’s a leading light in the Hellfire Club, a group consisting of the school’s elite but he’s actually more of a naughty boy than bad boy. In the opening chapter not one member of the club came across as being the slightest bit likeable with no hint of any redeeming qualities to make me change mind especially after the way they treated the new girl and headmaster’s daughter Iris at their first meeting. However when Keaton was away from his cohorts he’s more vulnerable, living in the shadow of his successful, older brother desperate for his mother’s approval. He’s torn between following his heart or toeing the family line in an attempt to win some show of affection from his mother who only acknowledges his existence when he does something that might have a negative impact on the Considine family. With Iris, he doesn’t like her from the start but I think for the first time he’s met someone who doesn’t care about his family name or money and that throws him. She’s got a similar background when it comes to perfect siblings and family expectations so she understands him better than he realises but is completely different from his usual type. It helps that there is a really strong chemistry between them but when they’re with each other they’re free to drop the fronts they present to the rest of the world and just be Keaton and Iris, boyfriend and girlfriend.
It’ll be interesting to see how the other characters in the Hellfire Club develop as the series progresses.
