Another reviewer complained it was too simple and repetitive - I could not disagree more and the reader should not be fooled into thinking this book is light on substance. To be clear - the author is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and Exercise Scientist - I can tell you that his opinion is sought after and respected in these worlds, and that everything he affirms in this book is based on a wealth of sound science, peer-reviewed evidence and clinical experience. A reader who wants complexity and detail can easily go off and gather this from the various libraries and databases, then try to collate, make sense of it, and turn it all into something they can apply and make work for themselves. Or you could just read this book where the author has already done this for you.
The next thing to be clear is that it does not push any single, magic solution to increasing your 'healthspan' (never heard that word before? - it makes eminent sense when you read about it) - the author makes clear his distrust of miraculous lotions, potions, pills, diets and gadgets with dubious scientific credentials. So you will not be exhorted to starve, stuff or medicate yourself, flog yourself with yet another brutal exercise regime or invest in an expensive machine that looks like an item of medieval torture and will make an excellent clothes-horse in 6 months time..
You will come to understand the route to true, 'metabolic health' and 'mitochondrial flexibility', and will find that getting your heart rate up to 70% of its maximum is an attainable, sustainable and even pleasurable experience - with massive physiological and psychological benefits. And even if you don't want to spend a few quid on a decent watch and chest strap to monitor this a bit more accurately (you will want to though..), the Doc will explain how to do this just by tuning into your breathing rate and effort.
Anyway, I'm waffling now so will shut up. There is lots more to this book - sleep, diet, the role of stressors - so do have a look and if it seems too 'simple' and leads you to wanting more depth - well that's a good thing isn't it..
Final point on my background in case this strikes a chord with anyone out there: I am nearly 60 years old now - trained all my life in the 'pain is just weakness leaving your body' school (ex-military - 13 years Airborne Forces). I continued to beast myself on the road, bike and ergo - chasing PB's from 20 years ago, but getting slower and slower, more worn-out and demotivated, and accepting that I will acquire Atrial Fibrillation any day now.. In the last 4 months I have discovered Luks, Couzens, et al - Zone 1 and 2 (70%MHR) training.. All my physiological metrics have improved (incl VO2Max) - I have found that - to my amazement - by running slowly I am now starting to run more quickly - I now want to train again and enjoy training - a state of mind I haven't been in for probably 30 years. I think I have started towards achieving metabolic health. If I'm still here in 40 years I'll let you know. Be nice to yourself - get this book - but don't just read it - make it work for you.

Some books like this I have thought were very definitive, only for something to come along in a few years which changes the thinking in the health and fitness space totally. This is true of anything though, I guess.
The book was a little heavy on the plant-based diet, but did acknowledge it wasn’t a huge necessity. And the Zone 2 training stuff _could_ be that which falls away after a few years of more research. The book addresses sleep in a much less fanatical way than that of Matt Walker, for example.
Nice job, but probably not aimed at me.

The information is presented in an easy to understand format and to action. I've had one rapid read through implementing some of the exercise advice. Now having a slower in depth read to see what other changes I should be making.
Really happy to have bought this and recommend it to others.
