Les ouvrages de Juan sont vraiment d'une grande utilité pour apprendre l'espagnol. En plus d'une histoire qui donne envie d'en savoir plus, il a su me faire rire après la seconde moitié du bouquin ! Juan manie bien les mots et les répétitions pour nous faire apprendre sans nous en rendre compte. Je recommande cet ouvrage à ceux qui apprennent l'Espagnol et qui veulent progresser !

Décidément, tout ce qu'écrit Juan Fernandez relève de l'excellence tant au niveau des histoires, ce professeur d'Espagnol habitant à Londres, est un véritable romancier de talent, lequel est couplé avec une pédagogie efficace tant le choix du vocabulaire et des tournures de langue s'adaptent au fil de la lecture, à votre niveau d'Espagnol pour, à la fin du livre, vous rapprocher sensiblement du niveau supérieur.

If you know some Spanish - especially some grammatical principles - this book will carry you along with a dreadfully silly story punctuated by some useful expressions. However, the downfall of this book is we are expected to pick up the differences between, for example, the pretorite and imperfect tenses while reading in Spanish. I am at a loss to understand how you can explain grammar in Spanish to readers who only have a basic knowledge of the language. In fact, on this point, the author hangs himself by his own petard! A character in the story, a teacher of Spanish, finds herself the object of criticisms by her class. Their complaint: she talks too much to them in English. To which she replies (in so many words - in Spanish): “how can I explain the grammar when your Spanish is so basic?” My point exactly.

And that’s the problem with this book and the earlier one: Hola Lola, you are expected - with only limited Spanish - to grasp the essentials of the grammar. Let’s take a simple example. There is a big difference between ‘I wrote’ in the preterite and imperfect tenses. How do you explain this in a book written entirely in Spanish aimed at learners? And could learners explain this in Spanish having completed the book? I doubt it.

I am not expecting a grammatical treatise before each chapter but some hand holding in English is necessary. This could be on the lines of ‘In this chapter William learns the difference between two past tenses. The verbs used are...... This how they work and this is the difference between them and their context’. The same applies to statements such as ‘I write’ and ‘I am writing’. They convey very different meanings in Spanish.

In an effort to be purist, the author misses the plot. Teaching is not learning by rote or guessing. It is about creating understanding. My brother speaks fluent French. He went to France unable to speak a word. How did he learn? By listening, reading English/French grammar and going to once a week classes in French with English explanations.

This book will improve your ability to understand more Spanish if you have had some previous lessons and have both a verb book and a dictionary to hand. The claim that you can learn Spanish ‘from scratch’ is disingenuous.

This is the second of Juan's books that I have read and I absolutely loved it. The story is funny and interesting, but what is most brilliant about it is that you find yourself picking up the meanings of new words and expressions simply by the way the book is written. Although there is a useful vocab at the end of each chapter for the more difficult phrases (not single words, but sentences or colloquial phrases), I found that I hardly needed to use it. This is because Juan is such an experienced teacher of Spanish that he seems to have an almost uncanny ability to know exactly which phrases will cause difficulties to his students, so he introduces them into the text in a contextual way that makes their meaning easy to guess. I have been following Juan's videos and podcasts on youtube and via his blog for about a year or more, and I can honestly say that I have found my level of Spanish improve beyond my expectations because of his genuine skill and experience as a teacher. Finally, I must admit that I am not really good at perservering with books in general, but this story is so attractively written that I actually saved up the last couple of chapters for a week because I didn't want it to end! For me that is the sign of a really well-written book. I am just back on this site to search for the next of his paperback titles to buy.

A good level - covers a lot of A2 material without being tourist focussed.
Story fairly entertaining - several of the dialogues reminded me of me and my novia - made me smile

I bought this after deciding to read more in order to jump start my Spanish studies. I found it more entertaining than the excellent Olly Richards books of a similar level. Indeed, I read the whole book on a cold & wet Saturday ( a typical British summer day )

This is perfect for developing one's Spanish skills. Once you have learned the basic grammar and structure of Spanish, what next? This book, along with the other terrific materials by Juan Fernandez (books, podcasts, videos, etc.) provides the answer. The key is that everything he does is in Spanish and if you choose an appropriate level you understand enough to take in new words and expressions. I have found that his method of teaching Spanish in context works brilliantly. I can't praise this highly enough. Very cheaply priced but hugely rewarding. It makes learning Spanish fun. It's so unlike my dreary school days learning French conjugations by rote. Ugh! I am really enjoying learning Spanish with books like this one.

This is the second book I read from Juan Fernández after ¡Hola, Lola!
I have just finished A2 level classes and I could read this book at a nice pace without needing a dictionary. This made it enjoyable to read as it didn't feel like I was studying and I could enjoy reading in Spanish at the same pace I would normally read in English.
The repetition of words and phrases is really helpful and I found it makes the learning process quite natural.
I also liked the way the author paraphrases many expressions so even if the vocabulary was new in the initial sentence, I could still grasp the meaning and continue reading which keeps it flowing and enjoyable.
I highly recommend these books.
