Review : My 2nd attempt at reading Emily Henry's novels...and this one was quit good!! I didn't like Beach Read at all, the FMC being too self-centered, the "ennemies to lovers" non existent and I made it half the book only to stop because the FMC never stopped talking about her dad! Although I do feel like family is an important topic in EH novels. Book Lovers also brings out the family topic with Nora & Libby's mom being the core of their special sisterly relationship! Strangely enough I wasn't even looking for romance here! Yes, I liked the MMC : Charlie is such a sweet & lovely guy, you cannot hate him, but the FMC was so fascinating and charismatic that all I wanted to know is how this whole small-town trip would affect her!

Tout les rapproche (l’amour de la grande ville, la passion pour les livres) mais comment se rejoindre dans une petite ville provinciale où ils n’ont aucun repère.
Un séjour concocté par une sœur bien-aimée apportera peut-être la clef.

Bravo. Très beau livre.

I liked Book Lovers even if, for me, there are too many lengths.
It's quite ironic by the way when you know that the protagonists work in publishing and give excellent advice to improve the stories of their clients.
Nora passes for a shark, an icy tyrant with everyone, who lives only for her work, however, despite the efforts of the author, we immediately feel that this is not true. Her chaotic emotional past is interesting, her family past captivating, her professional experience enriching. I liked that she was strong and vulnerable at the same time, I liked what was inside her, her deep fears and her love for her sister.
But she never made me feel like a shark.
Her family history is very touching but perhaps takes up a little too much space in the story. I had a hard time at first understanding how her sister could leave her two daughters behind while she went on vacation for a whole month. Of course, we discover the real reasons towards the end but it bothered me during my reading. Over the pages we learn more about our protagonists, drop by drop, in an intelligent way. We understand that Nora has communication problems with her sister, that she has always put her sister before her own needs, first and foremost. We also discover Charlie, our hero, little by little. It is quickly apparent that he adores Nora and that behind his grumpy facet, there is a sensitive man who has his own worries. I loved his family. I loved him, really. On the other hand, was it really necessary for Nora to have a date with another man?
I loved their passion for their work and the parallel with the book they are working on. I loved that for once, the heroes assume they prefer to live in the big city rather than in the countryside. I liked the story itself.
In short, a pleasant novel to read, with beautiful characters, a well orchestrated story, a nice writing, but with some lengths.

Another massive win from Emily/for us!

As expected, a beautifully written story with crystal clear descriptions that arent ridiculously flowery (thankfully) nor are they overused (she let out the breath she didn't know she was holding... Am I right?). As you can imagine, I'm not a big fan of long descriptions. I like action and lively diologue. But here Emily gives us LOL and heart breaking actions, superb diologue and descriptions that you've never read before and you wonder "how have these words never been used to describe this situation/characters/story before by another author?!".
Emily was good before. But here she's a genius! A master of her craft! Someone to aspire to be like (or just become friends with). She doesn't need to get any better than this, but if she does, that would be a lottery winning ticket to us readers/her bank account and all the people behind the scenes that make this happen and get paid to do so. Apologies for all the rambling. I'm just so in love with this book/these characters/the tears she made me cry/the HEA!
You probably read the blurb already, so now just jump right in. THIS is what 80% of the books should be like but aren't. Emily is magic!

Having said all this, I have a small warning for you (regarding the content): one of the characters suffers from Parentification (if you are a new mom you may have come across this on IG or else you may identify with this character and understand why you behave the way that you do). I'm not going to explain this here as I'm not a therapist and it's not my place (but I would suggest a quick search to understand it). Some people may find it slightly (psychologically) triggering. It is beautifully done and not just a gimmick.

Now buy it, stay up late reading it, cry over it and thank Emily later :)

Books Lovers and who wouldn't love this book

And yes, “the romance gods” would be proud!!!

5 stars for a wonderful romantic story where once again the “Opposing magnets are the ones that draw together.” and make for the most interesting stories when written well. And this one certainly delivered.

I confess to feeling disappointed in the first 100 pages wondering what all the fuss and hype was about. Then the book moved up several gears in just a few pages, and I found myself another one of those ‘Book Lovers’ that loved the ‘Book Lovers’. I will go as far as to say this is probably my favourite RomCom novel this year. Here are the reasons why

1. We had some serious themes without being too heavy, which gave the book depth and purpose. The themes blended perfectly with the storyline and the characters. Sister relationships, parentification, loss, grief, ambition with broken and strained relationship at the heart of the story.

2. A solid romance that builds slowly as two people get to know each other, coming from being arch-rivals. Same old troupe? It did not feel like it. The story brought the perfect blend of love, sexual tension, and the theatre without any of it overplayed or sentimental

3. The characterisation was excellent with all characters likeable but imperfect but not with the same old flawed characteristics we read about too often. They felt real and believable

4. The build-up in the story inspired a hungry turn of pages and I found myself captivated and absorbed in storyline. Nothing felt rushed not even the two lovers getting between the sheets which all added to the intrigue.

A brief summary of the plot.

There are many shades to Charlie, the arch nemesis of Nora. Small town boy who seeks a better life in the big city. The book starts with Charlie this once quiet, unfocused boy, precocious, and resentful boy returning as the sharp-edged man trying to fit back into his childhood home and environment. A place he never belonged to begin with.

Now take Nora who returns to North Carolina with her pregnant sister Libby, who appears to be having relationship problems of her own. The relationship building between the two sisters was a bonus side line to the story that could easily have been just about Charlie and Nora. Adding more detail to the storyline would only spoil the surprise, needless to say Charlie's and Nora's paths cross, clash and unite as we see the future unravelling for true soulmates.

A final thought.

“The tropes, the archetypes, the common plot twists all start to organize themselves into a catalogue inside your brain, divided by category and genre”, until a story comes along like Book Lovers, that adds more meaning and depth with real themes that accompanied that all important feel good factor. Positives that compensated for the very neat and convenient ending where everything slots perfectly into place.

Thoroughly enjoyable, perfectly written and highly recommended, to keep the romance God's proud!!!

It took me two attempts to get into Book Lovers, the first time I gave up as it didn’t grab me, but I kept reading glowing reviews so thought I’d give it another go. I am so glad I did. Nora is a successful literary agent and a bit of a workaholic; Charlie is an editor with a reputation for discovering bestsellers. Their first meeting is not a success. Nora wants Charlie to work on the new book by her client, Dusty Fielding, which is set in the small town of Sunshine Falls, N Carolina. He turns her down.
Two years later, ‘Once in a Lifetime’ is a bestseller, and Nora’s sister Libby persuades her to go away for a few weeks for a break before her third child is born. Unbeknown to Nora, their destination is Sunshine Falls. What follows could be the script of a rom-com – I could almost see it playing in my head – as Nora and Charlie get to know each other and fall in love. There are obviously obstacles in their way, but no spoilers so you’ll just have to read it for yourself.
The story is told entirely from Nora’s point of view so we know what she’s thinking and how her views change as the story unfolds. The characters are well written and believable, there is a lot of humour at the expense of small-town life where everyone knows your business, and we get fascinating glimpses into the world of books and bookshops.
The outstanding feature of Book Lovers is the relationship between Nora and Charlie. The witty banter, amusing emails, and the fact that there is enough interaction between them for their romance to be believable make this one of the best romance novels I have read in a long time. The narrative strand about Nora trying to sort out all her sister’s problems did become a bit repetitive after a while, but I thought the ending worked really well, and am looking forward to reading Emily Henry’s next book.

From this book lover to Book Lovers: to me, you are perfect. It is full of feeling and side splitting humour. It has loveable characters and a cosy small town vibe; all the better to get emotionally attached to. With every chapter flowing flawlessly into the next, and no shortage of themes, Book Lovers was exceptionally difficult to put down.

Henry writes beautifully about how life changes, never to be the same again; accepting the pain of that and embracing the hope of new memories and exciting adventures. At the heart of it all, is the bonds of family and what makes home, home.

Furthermore, the characterisation of Nora was impeccable. She’s a workaholic, struggles to become emotionally attached (in all of her ex-boyfriends opinions) and cares more for pragmatism instead of whimsical romance. Henry takes character traits typically reserved for a villain in the romance genre, and gives them the limelight in a very refreshing and satisfying spin.

As for the romance… Charlie and Nora’s chemistry sizzled off the page. They illustrated a very believable portrayal of an initial liking filled with banter and flirtation, into kindred spirits and love. They intellectually challenged each other and emotionally unravelled and supported the other, all of which provided fluffy feels, so many laughs and made me smile like the Cheshire Cat lord knows how many times. You know a romance delivers everything it ought to when the reader is left thinking: where’s MY Charlie Lastra????

All in all, Book Lovers delivers a perfect contemporary romance. It’s a humorous and emotional warm hug of a book. I thoroughly loved it.

Nora is a cutthroat literary agent, trying to mend the increasingly strained relationship with her sister. When they take a trip to the setting of her sister's favourite book, the last person she expects to (repeatedly) run into is her literary adversery, editor Charlie.

Admittedly, I struggled to warm to Nora in the opening chapters, and found those same chapters a little slow going. But from the second the sisters arrived in Sunshine Falls, I really warmed to her. By chapter nine I was totally invested and beginning to understand why Nora had become the woman she was now. Nora has lived her life putting herself last. It was heartbreaking reading about how she had been compartmentalising her feelings for so long.

I loved Charlie. In many ways he's like me. A stranger in his own family. He has the same dry sense of humour as Nora (and myself), and I found myself rooting for them almost immediately. Their banter was top tier: simultaneously hilarious with wicked sharp retorts but also hot as sin; and it always felt authentic (I have entire pages annotated). The chemistry was incredible. This is slow burn, enemies-to-lovers/soulmates done right. But more than that, this is a story of self-acceptance, and of sisterhood. I probably cried non-stop for the final ten chapters. That, for me, is the sign of a great book. Book Lovers is a story of two of them trying to find that perfect last page.

My first book by this author, I will definitely be catching up on Emily Henry's previous books!
