#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns with book one of the compelling Flesh and Fire series - set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.
Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.
However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania - she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission - one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then...end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.
Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit - it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

Review : THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!! The whole universe, the whole concept of this serie is insane!! Can't believe I'm rating yet another JLA book a 5 ⭐️!! Still have book 3 and 4 from the "Blood and Ash" serie to read! But for now we have to wait until November for the 2nd book (that I pre-ordered)!
A Shadow in the Ember is the first book in the Flesh and Fire series, which is a prequel series to the Blood and Ash series. Still following? Basically, this book is set in the same world than the Blood and Ash series but before. Years and years before and with mostly new characters.
Seraphena Mierel is the daughter of the queen and the last in the Mierel line but no one knows that. Nope. Cause before dying, her father promised her to the Primal of Death, Nyktos. And therefore, she grew up in the shadows, waiting to become his Consort so she can wither through his defences, make him fall in love and kill him. That's the only way to undo the curse on her country and stop The Rot from growing.
Except her seventeen birthday came and went and Nyktos decided he had no need for a Consort.
Three years later, Sera's mother barely talks to her, her stepbrother is as cruel as ever and all she does is train and kill on command. She just wants to help but doesn't know how. So when she witnesses an awful crime, she wants to avenge the dead, who cares if the culprits are gods?
But before she can, she's stopped by mysterious and very good looking Ash. Oh... and he's a god too.
To be perfectly honest, it took me a little while to fully get into the story but I got there and then, I could not stop. I read this book in a little over a day. I was glued to the page.
I think that what really worked for me was Seraphena. I fell for her right away. She was layered and ruthless sometimes and just everything. I loved getting to know her and seeing her grow. I loved seeing her relationships with other elvolve as well and I also loved her stepsister, Ezra.
I felt like the romance worked. I really did enjoyed that part of the book and the sexual tension was on point.
By the end of the book, I kept being surprised by where the story took me and I had that feeling of truly having to finish a book. And I did. At 4.40am...
I honestly just cannot wait for more... in this world, as well as in this series!

Reading this book made me feel like I was reading FBA again, in the way that I was so gripped and into this book. This was just an extraordinary book, as I knew it would be, that's set in a magical fantasy world. I was a little worried it might be to similar to FBA but even though it is set in the FBA world with similarities it's it own book, with its own characters. As always it was so well written, and I struggled to put it down. There's so many unexpected moments that you think you've worked out then BAM there's another twist and you were wrong.
ASITE was teased as an Hades and Persephone retelling without the kidnapping which is one of my favourite retellings to read so I was extra excited. JLA did not disappoint! You had the elements of Hades and Persephone, but it wasn't the main story of the book. You have the widely loved 'I was supposed to kill you' trope which I loved and an epic slowburn romance.
Sera has become one of my favourite heroine's. She's a badass character that has been given the task of saving her people, even if it wasn't her choice. Sera is a kickass and impulsive characters but she is also caring and wants what's best for her people. She's been trained her whole life in the art of killing and seduction to seduce and kill the Primal of Death and you can tell she excelled at that. She definitely has similarities to Poppy from FBA and the same stabby trait (which I loved) but she is also her own character. Her childhood and family made me so sad for her, she's been made invisible to everyone and shut out and I really felt for her. She wasn't treated like a daughter or a sister or even a friend but instead, a weapon and a means to an end, and made me want to get stabby for her.
Enter the holy hotness that was the Primal of Death, Nyktos. He was just WOW. JLA just has the amazing talent of writing super hot, alpha males and I am in love. He's super mysterious from the beginning and very infuriating but so powerful you don't want to get on his bad side. There were also times makes he made my heart-strings melt, with his acts and words. From the minute Nyktos and Sera meet, you can feel the attraction, the pages practically steam. The snark between the both of them is hilarious. They both are hotheads and they make Poppy and Casteel look soft. Now this was definitely a slowburn and with the chemistry they both had once they finally gave into the tension there was fireworks. The spice was explosive, JLA defiantly amped it up for this book.
As for the plot, you will learn so much more about this world, if you have read the From Blood and Ash series (which I do recommend reading before ASITE) there's so many questions we get answered and new information, which is amazing but also leaves you with more questions. everything starts to make sense and connections are formed, your jaw will be dropping to ground, many times, I was breath taken and shocked by some of the conclusions and twists it gave me so many chills and thrills. You meet new some amazing new characters that i'm excited about and old characters that you've heard of before. I loved finding out more about their lives beforehand, especially the characters that we have met before. and DRAGONS, I loved dragons and I am just obsessed.
As always JLA never disappoints and writes incredible stories, and from that ending I am left wanting more. I can't wait for book two and to get more of Sera and Nyktos!
Thank you JLA for sending me this ARC.

A Shadow in the Ember follows the story of Sera, a maiden chosen by the Gods to be the consort of the God of Death. She is trained as an assassin with one goal: make the God of Death fall in love with you… and kill him. But nothing is ever as simple as it seems, especially not when emotions get involved.
I absolutely adore Sera! She is just such a phenomenally flawed character and such a joy to read about and experience her emotive and complex journey. I have been a huge JLA fan for a decade now but I am completely serious when I say Sera may just be my favourite of all of her heroines. She is so snarky and just absolutely everything I love in a heroine. And Nyktos? Dude, don’t even get me started because we will be here for a loooooooong time. He is just so sweet and swoonworthy… even if he is the God of Death and can kill you with one look. I absolutely adore him. Seriously, Casteel who? …..He even rivals my love of Aiden and Zayne… and if you know me, you know that is huge and saying a lot!
A Shadow in the Ember is just perfection. Right from the start I was completely obsessed with this world, which is familiar to us… but also not. I loved seeing how different everything is from the world we know in the Blood and Ash series. It was so awesome to see how thing fit together… and how so much more makes sense now. However, Blood and Ash fans I will warn you… you may get answers, but you’re gonna be left with a whole lot more questions. My mind was left reeling wondering how everything is going to fit together. I cannot wait to re-read this when both series are finished and see how it all fits together.
This book has the perfect balance of action and romance. Everyone who knows me knows while I love romance in a book, I do not read pure romance because I get bored. I need some action to keep me interested… this book was a fantastic balance of that. Swoon worthy romance, steamy scenes and the best fast-paced plot! I was constantly left mouth agape, shocked by what was happening. It is filled to the brim with twists and turns and you won’t know what the hell is happening…. in the best possible way! I just loved every single moment of this fantastic book. I am actually more excited for the second Flesh and Fire book than I am for the next Blood and Ash book. I just loved this one so much more.
This was without a doubt my favourite JLA book to date. It had absolutely everything I love in a book. Action? Check! Romance? Check! DRAGONS!!!! CHECK! CHECK! CHECK! It’s like if I listed everything I love to read… this book has it all! It’s utterly perfect! A Shadow in the Ember is Jen’s best work yet. If you think From Blood and Ash was good… you’ve seen nothing yet. This book is perfection! A must-read for all fantasy fans everywhere!

I could not connect to Sera and did not like her very much for majority of the book. She lacked substance and just felt really robotic. She also liked to be repetitive. Overly repetitive. I did hate how her family treated her, which is why I did not understand why she still planned to go ahead with her plan. As far as I was concerned, she didn't owe her family anything. Nyktos has treated her better in the short space of time they've known each other than her family treated her her entire life. She should have just cut her loses.
I loved Nyktos, but he was just Casteel with a different name. But I loved him nonetheless and I feel like he deserves better love interest than Sera. That being said, he was also very repetitive, constantly bringing up the same things like a broken record. Yes, Sera accidentally stabbed you in the chest. Whoop-de-freaking-do. No need to continuously bring it up.
The conversations sometimes felt so very immature. Characters are still afraid to say vagina and c*ck. It's like if they say it they will be cursed or something. I really don't get it. Not to mention the amount of info dump in this book. I must have small IQ or something because despite reading one part over and over multiple times, I still have no freaking idea what was just said. Eventually I just moved on and hoped that I didn't miss something very important. Sometimes the amount of information just gets so overwhelming and it feels like too much is introduced as once. Too many creatures to remember names of, too many places being mentioned. A lot of the times it feels like my head is going to explode from the information overload.
Don't know if it's me and I grew as a reader, but reading JLA doesn't do it for me as much as it once used to. Which is really sad because JLA has made me fall in love with books in the first place. I will continue on with the series and hope that her writing captures me once more.
I'm giving it 3 stars because of Nyktos and because I quite enjoyed the last 20% of the book.

This book obviously takes place many years before FBAA, with different place names & characters... but I felt like I'd been thrust back into the same world. This book was simply *exceptional* It expanded a world we have already dipped our toes into, introduced characters we have heard of - & made us fall in love with them.
Sera is the badass female we all wish for in our stories. But she's not without her flaws. I had so much empathy for her story as she was always treated as a means to an end and JLAs writing really was brilliant in bringing out her emotions when all was revealed towards the story's finale. It really was heart wrenching.
Nyktos...Well. I never thought anyone would take over Casteel as my fabourite book boyfriend. Amazing. The subtle actions and words to show he truly cares for Sera are impeccable and melted my little heart. The chemistry & banter between them is unreal & the slowburn was just, *chefs kiss*
If you enjoy a twisted retelling of Hades & Persephone, this is a perfect one for you. Honestly this book destroyed all my expectations, leaving me a puddle of book hangover mess that I don't know how I'll ever recover from. Well, I do... But it'll have to wait until March when TWOTQ comes out. Time for a reread already I think!

A Shadow in the Ember is the first book in the Blood and Ash prequel series: Flesh and Fire. The series takes us back to tell the story of Nyktos, the Primal of Death and his consort—Sera.
Reading this book gave me all the nostalgia and made me have flashbacks to when I first discovered FBAA and how instantly I was captivated by the world and the characters.
I want to start this off by saying, that whilst I am writing this now, I had read this book back when it first released. These are my thoughts based on after my second read which has not changed only heightened more.
I did not think it would be possible to adore and love a character like I have with Poppy, well enter Sera. She is bold, fierce but still has that emotional vulnerability that I always look for in a FMC I read.
Reading Nyktos was a treat even more the second time round. Cas will always own my heart but I will say say Nyktos does hit a little different.
I will say right off the bat he does enthral you with his compelling aura, his delightful charm, and a tender side of him that just captured my whole heart.
The romance was nothing short of epic.
The plot was powerful, gripping, and making my tension, angst and drama loving heart oh so very happy.
Nods to FB&A was also *chefs kiss*
To meet the gods mentioned was everything and more and well there are also DRAGONS!
Your jaw will indeed be dropping A LOT when reading this.
JLA truly never disappoints with any of her books, and from that ending I am only left wanting more. I can't wait for A Light in the Flame (Nov 15!) and to get more of Sera, Nyktos and Co! Simply put, this book was addictive.
