Essential reading for allies

I have always considered myself an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. I try my best to keep myself informed and not mis-gender people, I offer my pronouns whenever I meet people to try and normalise them, I strongly believe in rights for all humans no matter how they identify, but I'd noticed my reading hadn't been as inclusive which is why I get that the @rainbowreadersbookclub came along at exactly the right time for me.

This book though, I heard of through Alok's interview with Jameela Jamil on her iWeigh podcast that we all know I'm kind of obsessed with ATM. Listening to Alok's story really stuck with me, and I loved the way they told their story and knew I had to buy their book asap.

I wasn't aware that it was such a small book, but my god was it impactful. A short book filled with their story and reasons and arguements as to why gender isn't a binary issue and why we should be moving past this thought process.

To quote the back of the book: "is it really a choice when you don't get to select the options you are given to begin with?" Even this just struck a chord with me, like you're right. How can it possibly be? How dare we decide how someone should identify themselves before they're even out of the womb?

I honestly really recommend this book to everyone. No excuses. Just read it. 🏳️‍🌈

I found out about Alok's book through Jameela Jamil's I Weigh podcast, and I was blown away by their speed and clarity of thought. Alok's book is more a treatise than a full 'here's everything you need to know', which is perfect as I soon realised that being nonbinary is intensely personal and can be realised in uncountable ways and forms. It's given me a lot to think about. If you want to explore the passion and ferocity of someone living a proud and vibrant life as a gender conforming person, have a good peek at this book.

I love Alok, and I love this little book.
I bought 2 so I could share it with the many people in my life who are confused about what identity means once you deconstruct gender binaries.

This book is simple, clear and very kind.
Alok brings so much compassion into the world through all their various kinds of work, and this is no exception. It is a beautiful expression of wisdom, kindness and clear thinking.

This is a cartoon style, superficial book, that does not help the parent of a non-binary child at all, though the approach might be appropriate for a young teenager wondering why they feel different. It concentrates on appearance rather than deeper societal issues. Might help some youngsters.
