But I hate unfinished things so I still bought the sequel. And I'm so glad I did ! I devoured The Wicked King in a couple of days, hooked chapters after chapters. The plot and pace was so much better.
Worth it :)
4,5/5
So much tension during the whole volume, it's awesome!
It was so hard to put it down that I read it in only a day, I loved it so much !

J’avais aimé sans plus le tome 1 mais celui la remonte la barre.
Hâte de lire la suite

This book follows on from ‘The Cruel Prince’, where Jude tricks her long-time enemy, Prince Cardan, into becoming the new King of Faerie. Not only that, he has sworn to be under her command for a year and a day. Using her puppet king, we follow Jude as she is able to manipulate Faerie, making it strong and safe for when her little brother Oak is old enough to take the crown. Being a human that can lie becomes really important as Jude navigates family drama, threats to the crown and the constant belittlement from the Fae, who don't realise this puny human is their real leader. All this whilst balancing the love/lust/hate relationship that she and Cardan have.
Although it had been a while since I read the first book in the series, I found myself immediately getting drawn back in, the story is fascinating and for a YA book it’s very political. The characters are great and the world building is excellent. I felt that the pace of the book flowed well and the plot got deeper and deeper. The dynamic between Jude and Cardan is interesting and this means that their scenes together are very enjoyable. Jude is a great heroine because she’s not nice all the time, she does the hard stuff and makes the hard decisions to get the job done.
Black is a great writer and I think it's amazing how deceptive and sly the faerie race is when they can't tell lies. I did think that the underwater scenes dragged a bit and didn’t really capture my attention but overall there were some amazing twists and turns in this book and I enjoyed it so much that I started reading ‘The Queen of Nothing’ as soon as I had finished. That ending was gold.

This time around, everything I enjoyed before was present and correct and perhaps improved. The characterisations, world-building and unpredictable plot only deepened. But with Cardan as king and Jude as his nominal advisor and actual power behind the throne, the stakes felt higher and everything felt a bit more mature than when they were all basically scheming schoolkids. And in turn, with more responsibility and more pressure, Cardan became a much more interesting character, simultaneously more likeable and more scary, and the sexual and political tension between him and Jude ramped up accordingly. As a result, the book really came alive for me. It was a compelling read throughout, though I particularly appreciated the two twists in quick succession at the very end.

I had glimpsed a few reviews and comments about this book, before I read it (thankfully no spoilers), and I was surprised at all the hate that Jude's twin sister was getting. Yes, Taryn is simpering and annoying. Yes, she had a hand in breaking Jude's heart...
Post book - I hate Taryn.
I also really wanted to hate Cardan in the end. Wanted to, not sure if I can manage it.
There were some great twists in this book that I didn't see coming. I think it's amazing how deceptive and sly this race is, when they can't tell lies.
I don't want to say anything else, because I'm afraid I might spoil it.
I can't wait for the third book!

Really, it's testament to any writer when you finish a book and feel quite lost and upset. Three days on, and I'm still missing the characters and the land Holly Black has created. It's magical, gripping and totally page-turning.
