Quatrième de couverture
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find-aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge-but who will be left alive at the end? --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition paperback.

The point of the story-two competing villains getting superpowers then trying to kill each other-IS fun but the relationship between those two, which the whole story is about, is shallow at best.
They're presented as friends but not best friends and even in their young years Victor repeatedly mentions that something is "off". In the "now"-non-flash-back part of the story they barely interact and when they do, nothing in their interactions really justifies their over-the-top actions towards another. Victor, depicted as very intelligent and coldly calculating, just doesn't seem like the type of guy to make his own life thus difficult just to carry out revenge. Eli didn't show any real sign of being a zealot before he changed. Sydney, who seems like a sensible character, doesn't once wonder if it really is a good idea to stay with these two grown men/convicts.
It just doesn't add up.
However, the characters and their relations to one other are promising, just like the plot. I hence do not rule out reading the next one, but it better be more engaging than this one.
"Promising" is good for a first chapter or a first third of a book, not for a whole 350 pages story.
Vicious was a thrilling journey, smartly written and epic ! I just loved every messed up characters and their back stories, there were not a second that I didn't like or that I thought boring. NONE ! My favorite part was the experimental one, it was so intriguing and made me think a lot.
Thank to this book, I will pick everything that Victoria will came up with. Yep...

This is an excellent story told in a non-chronological manner as we learn bits about how the abilities were developed, what happened to put Victor in prison and what is happening in the present as he pursues Eli. I never felt confused and I thought that the author gave you just enough information at the right times to understand what was happening. The author includes aspects of different points of view including that of a young woman, Sydney, who joins the group. Victor is the main character but he isn't always right and some of his motivations are a bit shady including the revenge aspect. This enhanced the book for me because he seemed very real. Eli seemed the weakest character to me and I didn't really understand why he behaved the way that he did - it didn't seem to ring true.
This was a book where I had to put myself totally in the hands of the author. It was impossible to predict what might be going to happen next and I found myself absorbed in the story. The story ends neatly but I do wonder if it is going to be the first in a series. I would be interested to see how things develop from here.

Vicious takes all the standard super hero and super villain tropes and flips them upside down!
Aided by the fantastic writing style, excellent story and short chapters, Vicious is a thrill ride of action, adventure and good old-fashion revenge.
Victor and Eli are roommates and friends. Two confident and arrogant boys who have so much in common: loneliness, ambition and intelligence to name a few. When Eli decides he is going to study EO’s in his senior year, Victor can’t help but be involved. But Victor doesn’t want to just study the theory, he wants to take it to the next level: experimental.
Victor and Eli both decide to take part in the experiments and both become an EO themselves after a near death experience. But when Victor’s experiment doesn’t go exactly to plan he finds himself in prison for 10 years. On his release the only thing Victor wants is to find Eli......oh and to get his revenge of course!
I love Victor Vale!! He is a truly awesome “villain” with a deep and complex character. Manipulative and cunning, but also considerate and caring at times. This puzzle of a man definitely snagged my interest from page one!
Eli Ever, on the other hand, is a cocky and arrogant “hero” with a superiority complex. However without him we wouldn’t see Victor in all his glory! I really didn’t like Eli’s character much.
Schwab’s storytelling had me questioning all my pre-conceived ideas about what makes a hero or villain and how everyone can be a little of both sometimes!
As Victor says “Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human”
Adored this book and I would give it all the stars if I could but as I can’t do that I’ll settle for 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cannot recommend it highly enough! A must-read.

Ten years on Eli and Victor are sworn enemies. As the numbers of ExtraOrdinary citizens plummet under systematic execution, fate shows an intervening hand. This is a story of one fanatical, evil sociopath (aided by a beautiful and mysterious woman) versus another violent, evil sociopath (aided by a gentle giant, a small girl and a dog). The purge must end, but only one man can come out on top.

Schwab writes a marvellously wicked tale that I found myself unable to put down. Vicious is extremely well crafted, exciting and tense throughout, and though it has more flashbacks than I do after a night out, they occur at just the right moments to carry the momentum and hold interest. The premise of the novel is a good overhaul on what we usually find in a superhero novel, there is no moralising, no good versus evil; this is about two messed up individuals with superhuman abilities who will inevitably use them to meet their own ends.
If you want characters who will sweep you off your feet or overwhelm you with their charm, good looks and charisma then stop! You won’t find any here. Vicious is about the miscreants of this world, those selfish, arrogant, sociopathic people who couldn’t give a toss about anyone’s lives but their own. And Eli and Victor are firmly placed at the far end of the arrogance spectrum. Eli’s religious fanaticism had him firmly placed in my bad books but Victor… Victor, I liked you.
Though Vicious has an abundance of disreputable characters stalking her pages, it does not want for any ‘likeable’ characters. Sydney and Mitch are our favourite villain’s sidekicks and, despite some rough edges, are particularly endearing. If you don’t like your protagonist villain-side-up then these two may just win you over. Having said that, the character of Angie felt a little lacklustre. Though imperative to the storyline she almost felt superfluous; the hints of a love triangle seemed pointless and I didn’t care enough about her to be bothered by her fate. This is unlikely to spoil your enjoyment though.

Vicious is a short and highly entertaining read which should appeal to a wide audience. Whilst the ending wrapped the story up quite well and left enough open for a sequel, it did feel a little anticlimactic. My expectations were just for something bigger… and much, much more evil. But don’t let that put you off! This book is incredibly readable and if you like super-anti-heroes, villains, with the dregs of society thrown in to boot, then Vicious will see you right. Onto the next Schwab!

Overall, I cannot emphasise just how thrilling this books was to read!
From the very first page it had me hooked with wanting to know who all these people were and why everything was happening. The way the plot twists and turns with every chapter left me guessing what would be next on every page.
The relationship between the main characters, Victor and Eli, shows how two people so very much alike in personality can become such different people twisted by beliefs.
My one minor annoyance with the book was the flipping of events from ten years prior to current day. But really that's on me as I'm a sucker for fast paced drama. Although, after reading through all of it there certainly was all the drama there as well!
Altogether this was an amazing read that made me question everything and consider points I hadn't thought of before. A great read!
Favourite Character - Victor (close runner up is Mitch)
Favourite Quote - "We're all monsters, but so are you."

Vicious is a fast paced, devilishly addictive read.
I wanted to know more, no, I NEEDED to know more, which kept me turning the (digital) page late into the night. Victoria created a world which is pretty much the same as ours, with one notable difference: (maybe? Who knows!) The existence of EOs, Extraordinary people. People who have powers beyond explanation, they shouldn’t be able to exist, they shouldn’t exist at all. Or should they? The powers the EOs have are fascinating, and how a person’s power is ‘assigned’ to them is so clever! I’ll speak no more on that as I don’t want to spoil it for you.
Vicious asks the hard questions and begs the question, whose side are you really on?
