I was so excited to read this book and received it on the day of publication. But my reading experience did not live up to expectation. I am an avid knitter and have read many textile memoirs and histories. A lot of the textile history Orenstein includes is retread from other books and she gets some facts dead wrong. For example, she claims there is no word in Ancient Greek for the color blue. In fact, this is a common myth and there are TWO words for blue in Ancient Greek. A couple clicks on the internet would have given her this correct information. I agree with another reviewer that the sheep shearing chapter is the best and some of her musing on the pandemic rings true. If you are interested in a similar but better written book, try Clara Parkes VANISHED FLEECE!

I am a devoted fan of Peggy Orenstein and will always pre-order then devour her books. Her previous works deeply informed my parenting journey and my kid's lives will be good-different because of what I learned from her insight & research and what I was able to metabolize because of her writing style. I learned so much about textiles in this book and their place in herstory; I'm not a yarn-magician so it was mostly new to me. Since it was written in the early days of the pandemic, I found myself resisting 'going back there' - like not enough time has passed for me to revisit the bonkersness of it all. By the end of the book, I was still hungering to know more about being a midlife woman at this time on the planet as it's what I'm grappling with. That said, the milestones she shared were very personal and she "owes" her readers no deeper interpretation/explanation of this tender terrain that can be so raw and unsettling. I'm hopeful that her next work explores this life-stage more deeply and in her signature voice which reads like a great all-nighter with the smartest, warmest, honest, funny friend you only see every few years.

The well-known author Peggy Orenstein decided she wanted to make a sweater by doing all the steps, from shearing the sheep to spinning and dyeing the yarn, to knitting. (Thank goddess she skipped the part where she had to raise the sheep. It would have taken too long.) After reading her op-ed about knitting in the NYT, I ordered this book and relished every minute of it. Orenstein writes in an informal, readable style, as if she is your BFF telling you about her adventures. The chapter on shearing the sheep is worth the price of the book! She seamlessly includes a lot of information about the history of dyes, the ecological impact of the fashion industry, and many other topics, but always in a compulsively readable style. Buy this book for anyone you know who loves to knit, crochet, spin or dye. Or anyone who might want to take up any of these pursuits. I loved this book!!
