This apparently overnight emergence, though, is just the latest stage in a long and varied history. The renown of Paris Lees and Hari Nef has its roots in the efforts of those who struggled for equality before them, but were met with indifference – and often outright hostility – from mainstream society.
Trans Britain chronicles this journey in the words of those who were there to witness a marginalised community grow into the visible phenomenon we recognise today: activists, film-makers, broadcasters, parents, an actress, a rock musician and a priest, among many others.
Here is everything you always wanted to know about the background of the trans community, but never knew how to ask.

"Warm, compassionate, inspiring. A much-needed antidote to media scaremongering, and a vital lesson in how to effect change" (CN Lester)
"Bloody good. Meticulously researched history of the collective transgender “journey” in the UK over the last century. Read it" (Juno Dawson) --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition kindle_edition.

We have seen in many other contexts how this "real lives" ideology leads to absurd political demands. In the United States it has led to black people bizarrely demanding that police stop shooting them. In Ireland it has led to women insisting that those making laws relating to pregnancy actually listen to the lived experiences of women and the professional expertise of doctors and midwives.
Sadly, many of these ideologues appear to hold the weird belief that each person has innate human dignity. They want society to uphold that dignity, and allow each person to flourish. In their dystopian vision, people would not be shot for having the wrong skin colour, pregnant women would not die because the law bans simple medical treatments, and gay and lesbian people would not be persecuted. Mad.
In Burns's case, her realist fanaticism means that the book is almost entirely devoid of the brilliant analysis of writers in the Janice Raymond tradition, whose fact base wisely has minimal contact with reality. It's more than 40 years since Raymond produced her famous paranoid-essentialist classic 'The Transsexual Empire' ... but ideologue Burns's realism will consign this tome to the scrapheap of unread, out-of-print works of realism such as the long-forgotten George Orwell's 'Road to Wigan Pier'.
So buy this book just to learn about this whole "real lives matter" thing. It might just catch on ... and you'd wanna know about it, wouldn't you?

Would wholly recommend if you want to learn "what came before" when it comes to trans issues in the UK.
My only criticism though is that all accounts in the book seem to be from a wholly white, and quite middle class, perspective. It feels like a whole lot of stories and context have gone untold.

This book is timely as many of the early "pioneers" are now reaching old age and their memories would have been lost forever - so it is a tribute to Christine Burns that she has put together these stories to remind future generations of transgender people where trans liberation in the UK began.
A must read.
