I bought this after seeing the film based on the book. The film deals with only three of the 50 tales included here and are significantly better than the printed versions as each tale in the book is no more than ten pages long reducing each story to a frenetic narrative with little time to pause and paint any images of the worlds being created. Indeed this is the major obstacle I am having as I reach the 2/3rd way through the collection. It takes no time to read each tale but none of them have any time to breathe or create any meaningful characters. As every introduction and tale follows the same template it makes it even more difficult for individual tales to stand out. In most cases I can’t remember one tale from another as there are so many similarities so these don’t stick in my mind. Of course this could be an age issue for me!!
The structure is based on the 14th century classics “The Decameron” and “The Canterbury Tales” and was originally in Neapolitan (I didn’t even know there was such a language!). The Penguin edition has been beautifully presented with a long introduction and copious foot-notes on every page for the scholars amongst you.
The tales are most interesting as they present the first ever recorded versions of classic stories such as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Rapunzel’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ so you can see just how far we have come by the time each story was Disney-fied in the 20th Century.
I loved the film but I am finding the book a slog!
